Off-Campus Dining: YSU is located directly next to the center of town, and so there are MANY places to eat if you decide to actually look around. Most commuters rarely stick around to look at all of the food locations available withing even a 1 mile radius. Cost is low, since it is a low cost of living environment. There are many vegetarian and organic options.

There are many varieties of food available near YSU: Mexican, Chinese, Japanese, American, and Italian (the last of which is everywhere). Italian restaurants are the most prominent because of Youngstown's dense Italian population. Some of the best Italian restaurants include the MVR next to Bliss Hall and Antone's/Winslow's in the Butler Art Museum on campus. One can find several leading fast food chains around campus that have become the "go-to" dining choice for many cash-strapped students. Some in the immediate vicinity of YSU include McDonald's, Arby's, Subway, and Taco Bell. Taco Bell is so popular that it has become a main attraction in college nightlife!

Although several restaurants reside within Youngstown's city limits, students will find the best selection of dining choices if they venture into the nearby suburbs of Boardman, Austintown, Niles, Liberty, Girard, and Warren. Every major restaurant chain is within a short driving distance. There are also many specialty restaurants, locally owned and operated, some of which have been in families for generations. This makes for a unique dining experience with a homey atmosphere. Youngstown features several such restaurants, as well as novelties like the Jib Jab Hot Dog Shoppe in Girard. This shop is only a 10-minute drive from campus and has a cult following because of its extremely low prices and tasty treats.
