Overall Experience: I love YSU. It has an amazing engineering program and is the perfect size for me.

Overall Experience: Being a commuter, it is hard to become friends with people. On the positive side of things there are a variety of groups that students can join. Including Fraternities, Sororities, NSCS (which I am currently active Treasurer in) and many more. Also there is numerous ways to find help with classes if needed.

Overall Experience: Its okay. It is a major change from high school, meeting new people and classes are so much different. But it is a good change

Overall Experience: YSU has gone so far downhill since I started here three years ago. We have gone through three university presidents and so many budget cuts that it has definitely affected the mood of the entire campus. The only food places left on campus are franchises and there is never anything too exciting happening in the area. I really wish I would not have transferred here to be closer to home. Yes, it is cheap- but is it worth the experience?

5 College Sophomore

Overall Experience: College in general was a wonderful choice for me, but YSU simply has a splendid community that really got me excited for every portion of the college experience: community service, classes, room and board, extracurriculars, all of it became wildly exciting thanks to the mentality of the YSU community.

Overall Experience: I just really love being in control of my own life and being responsible for doing good in school.

Overall Experience: I love the theater department. I feel like we are one big family, always watching out for each other. I always feel like I can go to any of my colleagues or professors when I need help. Despite all the curveballs that are thrown at us from those in power, we keep on going with our heads held high. We all have a want and need to succeed, and it is evident that our professors want us to as well. As a transfer student I wanted to find a place I fit in more, and Youngstown State Department of Theater and Dance is the place for me.

Overall Experience: Everyone in administration is very enthusiastic about their school.

3 College Junior

Overall Experience: Its okay. Need more teachers who love teaching and are involved with classes.

Overall Experience: Nice University, just a lot of changes in administration.

Off-Campus Housing: Close off-campus housing can be dangerous due to the neighborhood

Party Scene: The party scene close to campus, downtown is great.

4 College Junior

Off-Campus Dining: Off-campus dining is close and convenient.

4 College Junior

Administration: I believe the administration is strict, but not strict enough

3 College Junior

Campus Food: More options would be nice.

2 College Junior

Scholarships: Financial aid for YSU is extremely difficult for transfer students such as myself. We are kind of stuck in limbo.

Off-Campus Housing: Safety is my biggest concern. Most off campus student who chose to live near campus live right next to some very bad neighborhoods. You frequently get alerts on your phone that there has been a robbery (usually on the street, not a break in). They really need to bulldoze all of the empty dilapidated houses around campus, because there are squatters. Now prices can vary, and you can get a very nice apartment cheaply, but those fill up quickly, and you can be left with some very expensive rent for a sub-par house or apartment. Convenience and proximity to campus are a major plus. Most are withing walking distance.

Party Scene: Many people party on the weekends here. But that may just be my bias, since I live in my fraternities house (I rarely drink btw). Campus courtyards has many small appartment parties basically every weekend, but they are very secluded. The fraternities take turns having parties and so for much of the fall and spring semesters there is one every week or other. Summer party life is non-existent.

Off-Campus Dining: YSU is located directly next to the center of town, and so there are MANY places to eat if you decide to actually look around. Most commuters rarely stick around to look at all of the food locations available withing even a 1 mile radius. Cost is low, since it is a low cost of living environment. There are many vegetarian and organic options.

Administration: It is very strict for people living in the dorms, but that is a good thing, because the surrounding neighborhoods are very bad. I like that the dorms and facilities are drug free, and alcohol free if you are under 21. It promotes a nicer and more pleasant environment. The only people that get on my nerves is the parking facilities (Am I right?). They are extraordinarily strict, which is a good thing, but when I lived in on campus housing I couldn't park next to my dorm since the gate was broken, so I parked in the parking lot across the street and received a ticket. Thankfully, the parking administration office is more pleasant to talk to.

Campus Food: THere are a number of places that student can eat, however not as much choice as one would like. But it is not anyones fault, since the number of students that attend is low, and the amount of students living on and around campus is extraordinarily lower making it hard to own a business in the area sometimes.

4 College Junior

Scholarships: Generally, the school is on top of administering financial aid and does so ay before deadlines.I would say a good portion of students utalize these financial aid funds.

2 College Junior

Campus Housing: Dorm life is very small. The school consists of somewhere between 8,000 to 13,000 students and less than 20 percent live in on campus housing. These are not exact figures, but are very representative of actual figures. Now as for the atmosphere within the dorms, it is very sociable, and people are very open to talking to new people. Lyden house is very dirty, but Cafaro house (honors and scholars housing) is very nice and tidy.

3 College Sophomore

Off-Campus Dining: more of a distance off campus

3 College Sophomore

Administration: certain buildings are more strict than others

Many local high school students do not bother applying to YSU because they consider it a second-rate college that's too close to home. These students do not know what they are missing! College is only what the student makes of it, and YSU will fully satisfy students who put forth an effort into their college experience. Many current students find themselves pleasantly and unexpectedly surprised that they are actually enjoying their time on campus. As time passes, more and more people are recognizing that YSU is truly a great university.

The campus itself is pristine and gorgeous; the landscaping is well-done, and the architectural structures are being renovated to project a modern, artistic look. Walking to class on a sunny spring morning, students often find themselves stopping in wonder to gaze at the flowers and trees. A lovely atmosphere enhances the students' love for the institution and even the subject matter in classes. An important advantage for YSU's students is the high quality of their instructors and professors. Most of the professors, staff, and assistants are extremely helpful, challenging, and engaging. Some benefits include networking with professionals in various venues, developing competitive skills, and utilizing wonderful hands-on experiences in the field. YSU provides its graduates with running leaps into the future for a price that few other schools can match.
