4 College Junior

Overall Experience: Most professors are extremely passionate about their field of study. They want to pour into students and challenge them to think critically. Class sizes are usually around 30 but some general education classes can go up to about 200.

3 College Junior

Overall Experience: A degree from Youngstown State is valued, but individual experience is valued more. It's crucial to get involved in activities that deal with your major and make connections on campus.

5 College Junior

Health & Safety: Youngstown is not the safest town in Ohio. Despite that fact, Youngstown State University is extremely safe. YSU has their own police and there are several phones around campus students can use to contact them in case of an emergency. When it is dark, there are usually at least 2 police officers patrolling the parking lots so students feel safe walking to their cars.

3 College Junior

Campus Housing: The cost of living on campus is not worth it whatsoever. If students live 30-45 minutes away from YSU, they should commute to save money.

2 College Junior

Greek Life: Non-Greek students view Greek students as stuck up and snobby. One of the classic phrases around campus about Greek members is that they "couldn't find any friends so they paid to have some". I personally know a few Greek students and they are very nice. It's sad they have a bad reputation around campus.

3 College Junior

Athletics: The athletics at Youngstown State University are decent. There's not much advertising for athletic events, so there's not a lot of student involvement. School spirit is interesting because some people are very proud to be a student at Youngstown State, while others are merely there because the tuition is the most affordable option in the area. Students who are proud to be a YSU penguin show school spirit by wearing YSU shirts around campus and to games.

Overall Experience: Youngstown State University is a decent school. Since it is mostly a commuter college, most students want only want to be on campus to take their classes and leave. There is not a strong sense of community unless students get involved in clubs or student organizations. Luckily, there are many options available for students who are looking to participate in extracurricular activities. Students will get get out of their college experience what they put into it, and that is no different at YSU.

4 College Senior

Overall Experience: All of my classes have been pretty full but professors do a good job at offering individual help and guidance.

4 College Senior

Overall Experience: Finding a job or experience in your desires field is usually no issue at YSU. There are many brochures throughout campus and announcements made by professors that broadcast upcoming internship and job opportunities.

4 College Senior

Health & Safety: There is often safety meetings and emails being offered to students. There is also an on campus police staff, health center, and even STI screenings occasionally.

3 College Senior

Greek Life: Greeklife is very much relevant at my school. I am not into that particular realm but am still very much aware of their benefits to campus AND community.

4 College Senior

Athletics: Win or lose, there is always a lot of faith and encouragement shown to our sports teams from fans to kids and parents, people are proud to be a penguin.

4 College Senior

Overall Experience: My overall experience in college at YSU has been great. What makes it so interesting to attend a school in my hometown is seeing how many people come from out of town just to attend a school that many residential students lack to appreciate its advantages.

3 College Junior

Campus Housing: I personally don't live on campus, but I've heard through my friends that it is okay, as far as meeting new people

3 College Junior

Greek Life: The members of the Greek life are heavily involved with the community and other different clubs on campus.

3 College Junior

Athletics: Athletics is very important at YSU. The student body have loyal team spirit for just about every team.

3 College Junior

Overall Experience: YSU offers a lot of opportunities for the students. There are plenty of clubs that they offer for the student body. Whatever you're into, you will almost always find a club dedicated to you interests.

3 College Sophomore

Greek Life: I think greek life is fine; its a personal choice I chose not to make.

5 College Sophomore

Athletics: Kids at YSU take our sports pretty seriously for the most part.

4 College Sophomore

Overall Experience: I love going to school and getting an education; however, sometimes a classroom is full of people who don't care.

3 College Sophomore

Athletics: I don't participate in attending our sports events, mainly because I'm not that into sports. However we do have a lot of support with our football team and basketball team. Many students go to games and show school spirit. A lot of our students wear hoodies and t-shirts that support our school.

4 College Sophomore

Overall Experience: I chose this school because of the price. I come from a family with limited income so my college education is all on me. I love the campus. It is very green and the students are always approachable. Everyone holds open doors for each other and is willing to talk to you. I feel like this school is unique in the things that it offers. We have a Chi Alpha club for Christians, where as my high school didn't have a religious club. My classes are challenging and i feel that I have to study more than I did in High school.

3 College Freshman

Greek Life: I never really participated in greek life, but I heard its okay.

3 College Freshman

Athletics: The big sports are football, baseball/softball, and basketball. Everything else is sorta over-shadowed. The university does have nice facilities for all sports.

4 College Freshman

Overall Experience: People are great, there are lots of clubs and organisations to join, and theres always something going on!

Many local high school students do not bother applying to YSU because they consider it a second-rate college that's too close to home. These students do not know what they are missing! College is only what the student makes of it, and YSU will fully satisfy students who put forth an effort into their college experience. Many current students find themselves pleasantly and unexpectedly surprised that they are actually enjoying their time on campus. As time passes, more and more people are recognizing that YSU is truly a great university.

The campus itself is pristine and gorgeous; the landscaping is well-done, and the architectural structures are being renovated to project a modern, artistic look. Walking to class on a sunny spring morning, students often find themselves stopping in wonder to gaze at the flowers and trees. A lovely atmosphere enhances the students' love for the institution and even the subject matter in classes. An important advantage for YSU's students is the high quality of their instructors and professors. Most of the professors, staff, and assistants are extremely helpful, challenging, and engaging. Some benefits include networking with professionals in various venues, developing competitive skills, and utilizing wonderful hands-on experiences in the field. YSU provides its graduates with running leaps into the future for a price that few other schools can match.
