5 College Freshman

Drug Safety: I can't think of an instance when I've seen drugs besides alcohol.

Greek Life: They throw great parties, and they are mostly accepting of everyone.

Campus Quality: The facilities are fantastic, and they are all generally close together.

Campus Quality: The students here are always very happy with Yale.

Scholarships: The financial aid here is better than the offers from Harvard, Princeton, Stanford, MIT, and Caltech.

Diversity: The campus is extremely diverse and generally liberal, but there are also many conservatives here too.

Administration: Not sure if the question is "how strict do I think Yale is" or "what do I think of Yale's strictness", but I answered the latter. The schoolmhas a phenomenal atmosphere.

Weather: It's occasionally rainy, and it can get very cold, but it is great weather for New England.

Greek Life: Greek life has little effect on the campus, which is the way it should be. All parties at Yale are open parties, which is nice so even freshman are guaranteed to have a grand old time. It is easy to go Greek if you want to, the frats are best at throwing late-night mixers that are sometimes fun post-Toads (the off campus club 30 seconds away from your dorm).

Technology: Everyone on campus has their own laptop. That being said, there are a million computer labs and printing is relatively cheap. Network reliability: the network probably goes down for 5 minutes twice a month and for those five minutes, it is literally the worst because you NEED your internet right NOW. Network speed = lightning speed. Never seen a faster connection.

Party Scene: I can pretty much give it 5 stars. Parties abound Wednesday-Saturday, and there is almost ALWAYS some party going on. Off campus options are easily accessible, but under 21 usually pays $5, which is sometimes a bit annoying, except for the fact that there is literally always a party going on on campus, and drunk 3 am hangouts are of course mandatory at least once a month and available, again, anywhere.

Campus Quality: Everything and everywhere is gorgeous. So many ridiculously beautiful study spots. Student hangouts = mostly in dorms or in dining halls or wherever they find a place to sit, which could literally be anywhere.

Diversity: There is literally every single kind of person here. Yale is known as the "gay ivy" for good reason: being gay here is 100% accepted and it's not weird at all or looked down upon in the least. It's definitely better to be gay here than likely anywhere else in the country. Political beliefs = moderately liberal (all at least somewhat socially liberal, diverse fiscally/economically). Economic background and ethnic/racial diversity, there is literally everyone you could possible meet you will meet.

Athletics: Three types of athletics: IMs, Club, and Varsity. IMs are very low intensity and fun and non-committal. Club is a worse version of varsity, and they are generally more intense, but their games are not well attended. Varsities are well attended, especially Yale-Harvard, and a big time commitment. Sports are definitely present on campus, but not overbearing like at some other universities.

Diversity: Yale Divinity School has a wonderfully diverse atmosphere. Students of all backgrounds and orientations are made to feel welcome and accepted, with student organizations for additional support.

Local Area: New Haven is a wonderfully cultural city, it reminds me of 'little New York'. Shopping, restaurants, museums are all downtown and take kindly to the student population.

Parking: Parking is ample for permit holders and all university parking lots open to the public after a certain hour in the afternoon.

Campus Housing: The Residential College system is amazingly effective at creating small, close communities and fostering friendships among students. All Yale undergraduates are members of one of the twelve colleges and they live, eat, compete in intramural sports, and much more with the members of their college. Each college is its own distinct building (by building I mean palace) with its own dining hall, libraries, gym, and courtyard(s). Each of the colleges also has its own unique facilities such as underground theaters, wood shops, basketball courts, pottery studios, movie rooms, etc. All colleges have their own master and dean who are responsible for the well-being of the students in their college, and who plan special events or outings for the students. All in all, the residential colleges provide a truly wonderful experience, and students have a lot of pride in their colleges.

As for actual living spaces, Yale students live in spacious, newly renovated suites, all of which have large common rooms. Bathrooms may either be shared by a floor (~8-14 people) or by a suite. Rooms are mostly doubles, though there are also many singles available.

Academics: Academics at Yale are incredible. I am only a freshman, yet I am already taking classes from some of the best professors Yale has to offer - all of them have conducted significant amounts of research or authored books in their fields. Classes are a joy, my fellow students are inspiring and intellectually engaging, homework is intense but manageable, and professors are always easily accessible. My largest class this semester only has 16 students - the small class sizes really allow me to get to know my professors.

Yale has a huge variety of classes from which to choose, and flipping through the course catalog at the beginnings of the semesters can sometimes be overwhelming. But students are guaranteed to find classes that fit their particular interests within larger fields of study.

Transportation: The shuttle at Yale is free although service can sometimes be somewhat spotty. The campus is pretty compact, however, so it's not impractical to simply walk everywhere.

Administration: Rules and regulations are mostly focused/enforced based on student safety. This is particularly true with regards to alcohol. If you're not bothering others or hurting yourself, you can probably do it.

Weather: This is probably the worst thing about Yale. The best times to be on campus are the first 2 months of the school year and the last month. In between lies many cold, often snowy days. This mainly poses a problem when walking to and from classes. There's also a lot of humidity.

Party Scene: Most parties are on campus, but there are also some local places for clubbing, drinking, etc. And if you can't find anything in New Haven, we're just a short train ride from NYC and Boston!

Campus Housing: AMAZING! Forget those "dorms" that kids are other colleges live in. At Yale, you get a suite, which is more like an apartment. Suites are shared between multiple people, and include a common room, bathroom, and bedrooms. I could not ask for anything better. The suites are large, clean, and renovated regularly. Because our housing system is so beloved, 90% of the student body lives on campus!

Health & Safety: Before learning much about Yale, some people assume it is dangerous because New Haven isn't the nicest city. However, I have NEVER felt unsafe here. I've gone for walks around campus at midnight, and everything was fine. All of the "rougher" parts of the city are off-campus, and you honestly have no reason to go there. Everything you need is right on campus. And the crime that might occur is petty crime, like theft. You won't read about students getting murdered or anything like that.

Yale is, in every sense of the word, an incredible place. Students love the faculty, the classes, and the opportunities, not only because they are among the best in the world, but because they are highly accessible and undergraduate-focused. Yale is a place where academic theory blossoms into reality and where experiences exist that can't be found anywhere else in the world. It is a great privilege for students to continually study under the most knowledgeable people in their fields, from Nobel Laureates to international statesmen. Even though the Yale experience can be rigorous and demanding, most students wouldn't trade their years here for anything.

Yale prepares its students to meet the world with energy and knowledge. Its liberal arts education teaches students to think, to analyze, to question, and to consider. Yale graduates can do nearly anything they want, from working with Goldman and Sachs to obtaining a Ph.D. in ethnomusicology. Essentially, Yale successfully prepares its students for the pursuit of their passions in any area of life.

What ultimately sets Yale apart is the people that comprise its community. Yalies (students, faculty, and staff) are dynamic, fascinating people who continually surprise each other with their passions, their opinions, and their enthusiasm. Every student has a unique story to tell and interests to pursue. Yale is amazing because it gathers these diverse and remarkable individuals together for the same ultimate purpose: to learn, to grow, to thrive, and to discover themselves.
