5 College Freshman

Local Area: Our campus is right down the hill form Kalamazoo College and I've made a lot of friends there, as well as at my own university. The downtown Kalamazoo area is fantastic! There's always something going on, on the weekends and it's very easy to get to with students being able to take the city buses for free with our student ID's, it's also a great place to find off-campus jobs.

Local Area: The area is great, lots to do in the warmer months, but the winters are too hard here to do much anyways. The community is really welcoming to students and many mom and pop places offer student discount to us. It's nice.

4 College Sophomore

Local Area: There is always something going on if you care to look for it. It is located pretty close to the downtown area so you can always find something. Almost all restaurants and recreation areas have at least one college night.

3 College Freshman

Local Area: Most day are routine around campus students coming and going from class. Not much interaction occurs between students who aren't already good friends. Most people keep to themselves. The city isn't very interesting to the outsider unless they know where attractions are. On campus there are always events taking place, from art exhibits to public seminars. Small mall located on campus but not much else for shopping around. Safety is a hit or miss, depending on the area. Sports are improving but do not attract a wide fan base. Locals seem indifferent to students.

Local Area: Downtown Kalamazoo is a great place to go when you crave an upbeat and artistic atmosphere away from the University, or simply enjoy shopping in small boutiques. However around the outskirts of town, the neighborhoods can get a little shady, and there is frequent crime littered about the city.

Because the city's name sounds so exotic, T-shirts are sold in the area, touting, "Yes, there really is a Kalamazoo." Yet, despite the unusual-sounding name, the atmosphere in Kalamazoo is pretty laid-back. There are all different types of people with different styles, music, and hangout choices. In terms of food, there are a lot of locally-owned and -run restaurants with unique food options and interesting décor. Some restaurants are college themed, and others are your typical chain restaurant.

The downtown area is definitely a place to check out during the day and night, as there is a great variety of things to see and do. Kalamazoo is known for its art deco style of architecture, with examples including the Bank of Kalamazoo Building (e.g., the American National Bank Building) on East Michigan Avenue. In the downtown area of Kalamazoo, you can also find concerts, bars, clubs, fine dining, shopping centers, comedy shows, dance clubs, and relaxed coffee shops. If you're looking for a good time, downtown is the place to be after hours.
