Overall Experience: Ah WGU. It has been an interesting two years pursuing my M.S. in Information Security and Assurance with this school (take note that this review is biased towards my experience with that particular program). I have been working full time and I knew from the start there was no way I would be able to handle night classes, so it would have to be online courses for me. WGU seemed like the perfect fit. They are very affordable and I could work on the classes on my own schedule. Great.

As it turned out, my expectations were much higher than reality. Make no mistake, everything about the flexibility is true, and the staff I worked with were all very helpful (friendly, supportive, always seemed to have time for me). But when it comes to the substance of the education, the program is severely lacking. For one, the course material is largely out of date and not very helpful for completing the actual assignments. I actually found more success just researching the topics online - all of the information on the topics is open-source.

Most of the papers you will write amount to nothing more than structured fill-in-the-blank templates based on the rubrics (I can't imagine there being any real distinction between one student's work and another). No room or incentive for creative thought - just one 'right' answer that fills their checkboxes. I thought the capstone project would be different in this respect. I spent 150+ hours on a 92 page paper that someone took 90 minutes to grade. And they gave me the same rating for *every* section - almost like they didn't put too much thought into the process...

So I'm left with the question - "just how good can online schooling be?" Most of what I've learned was from my own research. Often I think I would've been better off spending my time studying for more certification exams, or *gasp* just learning valuable skills! Oh well. I have a piece of paper from an accredited university. That's all our society really expects anyway right?

Overall Experience: the counselor I have at the moment has been great. She is very polite, encouraging and very knowledgeable about my course plan. I am just getting started and am doing my orientation now. The next counselor I have will be my student counselor, who will help me get through my courses and stay on task. A great opportunity for me after being out of school for over 20 years.

Overall Experience: WGU allows me to work at my own pace, getting extra help when needed, but also able to go quickly through the areas that are already strengths. The mentors are fantastic and never make me feel I am burdening them with questions. They are available during a variety of times so that I can make an appointment that fits my schedule.

Not only would I chose WGU again, I have chosen them to continue my Master's Degree.

Overall Experience: I love that WGU is flexible and works around my schedule. My schedule is very unpredictable and it's nice that I can do my work and study when I need to, whether it's at 2pm or 2am. And, I love having a mentor. If I didn't have a weekly call with my mentor I probably wouldn't get any school work done at all. It helps keep me accountable.

Online Courses: I love the online courses and find it more convenient for me to utilize because I'm a single Mom and I work full time. I can do my homework on my own time and don't have the pressure of being in a seated class at a certain time. As I stated before I have a great mentor who I can contact at any time should I have any questions or problems and I feel like they are all about my success.

Academic Flexibility: Since I work full time and am a single Mom, the online classes at WGU have been a positive fit for me. My whole experience with WGU has been positive from transferring credits to doing my homework.

Overall Experience: I think with any education it is beneficial to the person no matter what the institution is. In obtaining my Associates Degree, my current employers gave me a substantial increase in pay and informed me more will come when I've competed my Bachelors Degree.

Tuition & Financial Aid: First and foremost I feel I am getting a quality education for a fraction of the cost of other traditional institutions. My experience with the financial aid department was a positive in that they guided me through the process step by step.

Academic Experience: One thing I love about WGU is the Cohort sessions. They are very helpful in understanding the courses and passing the assessments. I also like the fact that I have a Mentor who I can call at anytime and discuss any problems I am having. The mentor I have has been very helpful to my success at WGU.

Campus Resources: Although all of my classes are online, I have had nothing but a positive experience with any interaction I've had with Western Governors from my classes to financial aid.

Overall Experience: The courses are very relevant to the degree. I have been in the industry over a decade, and i see the theories that they are teaching about, and preparing the students for in practical application in my career. They are doing a very good job for taking me to the next step.

This school is not for people who just want a piece of paper, and I think the REAL student, who is willing to put in the effort, is going to enjoy this.

Overall Experience: The setup, including application, registration, payment, and follow-through on the part of the school was great.

Several people assessed the process, and helped to prepare me for what I was getting myself into. I like it, and would suggest this school.

Online Courses: Online is the only way that I want to do this, so the format is great. It is better, and smoother, than the other online formats that I have been exposed to, so first out of four is pretty good in my books.

The courses are morphing in their delivery techniques, because as newer examples or better presentations are available, they are added, or overwrite older, or lesser quality information.

The mentor structure gives me one mentor that helps guide the entire process, then course-mentors for specialty material, or in-depth questions.

I love this format.

Student Body: This is an online degree, so the student interaction is there, if I wanted, but with my busy schedule I am there to learn. The social opportunities, and communication is encouraged, and they offer face-to-face socials, but I have not taken them up on it, due to a heavy schedule.

4 College Junior

Career Services: I have not tried their career services yet, but I am positive that they will match the other excellent student-centric services that they offer, and I have taken advantage of.

I am giving a high rating in advance, because I am judging what I have yet to know with my high satisfaction with what I HAVE seen and know.

5 College Junior

Academic Experience: I am really being pushed to my limits, and academically, i am sure that these classes are preparing me for what I will and could face. I am presently facing them in my company, so the material is extremely relevant and topical.

It is a necessity for WGU student to not only learn how to answer questions, but the students are required to think. They ARE NOT a paper-mill, and I think my degree will hold weight.

Challenging, and dynamic experience!
