5 College Freshman

Overall Experience: I love the small college life experience. It is more personal.

5 College Freshman

Overall Experience: I know I am getting a wonderful college education at WCU!

4 College Freshman

Health & Safety: I feel safe on campus.

2 College Freshman

Off-Campus Housing: There are not many affordable options for students to share a suite.

3 College Freshman

Off-Campus Dining: There are a few choices, but you have to drive to Sylva, NC for them.

4 College Freshman

Administration: WCU is very good about ensuring a safe environment.

College Freshman

Party Scene: I am not interested in a party scene. I take my education seriously. My Mom is a working single mother...I cannot afford to waste her hard-earned money.

2 College Freshman

Scholarships: They declined the Golden Leaf scholarship for me because my mom had to take out money from her 401K for surgery. I was told this made her income too high even though it was for medical purposes.

3 College Freshman

Campus Food: In the upstairs Dining Hall, the best option is the Salad Bar.

4 College Freshman

Campus Housing: The cost factor is cheaper than living off campus.

2 College Freshman

Off-Campus Housing: I live off-campus and it has been a constant struggle. There are many college students that are broke and cannot afford to live in the main off-campus buildings that have all of the fancy amenities. If you can even find a place that you can afford, it is probably so run down that you would not be able to live there. Right now, I live in a studio apartment with my significant other and the rent is more than $600/month, which is the best we could find but way too expensive for such a small place. We find ourselves borrowing money frequently in order to pay rent because we cannot afford it, which is setting us up for more misfortune in the future. We do not have any washer/dryer access, so that is an additional cost. Cooking in our kitchenette is almost impossible. And the cleanliness is ridiculous. But, that was the only option we could find. We have been here for almost 6 months constantly searching for another place to live and have yet to find something that we can afford and that is reasonable. A brand new off-campus apartment complex has just been built, but the prices are way too high for us to move there. I really wish the school would consider the individuals that can barely afford to live in a $500/month apartment and do not want to live in a falling apart, bug infested location, which is about the only thing you will find for that price.

Off-Campus Dining: While most of the off-campus dining consists of fast food and restaurant chains, I think that the amount and variety make up for the lack of original restaurants. Of course, there are around 10 local restaurants, but they are usually very expensive so I have not been able to go to many of them. Only a few restaurants give student discounts, and they are usually only applicable once a week. The convenience of off-campus dining is excellent, but the amount of late-night options is preposterous. In a college town, you think that there would be more restaurant options open after 10 p.m., but that is the average time most of the businesses close. Cost is not great, coming from a broke college student. Unfortunately, there are not many cheap options to eat out off or on campus and if you can find a cheap restaurant, the quality of the food is very bad.

Administration: I personally do not think that the strictness of the university is bad or amazing. It is pretty average, which is why I chose the third rating. I think that some things are blown off more than they should be and others are way too serious. For example, although I do not participate in drinking or partying, I do not recall great strictness when it comes to partying, underage drinking, or doing drugs. I could be completely wrong because I do not actually partake in these activities, but I do not think that they are taken as seriously as they should be. Parking, on the other hand, is taken way too seriously in my opinion. I think that the rules are a little ridiculous and make it hard for commuters like myself to find reasonable parking that does not require a 10-minute walk. I have been late to my classes numerous times because I couldn't find a parking spot in a commuter or freshman lot, even though faculty and upper-class lots had plenty of empty spaces.

Party Scene: A rating would not be applicable from me on this subject because I have never partied and do not plan to start.

4 College Freshman

Scholarships: WCU makes it really simple for you to apply for financial aid and receive any and all information regarding your personal financial aid report. When you are eligible for a refund, the college makes the process very easy and hassle-free, which I greatly appreciate. Using your financial aid is also really simple and I have no complaints about any of the financial aid processes. Any tips I would have for acquiring financial aid is to simply apply and make sure you follow all of the directions. It is also important to check up on your financial aid status frequently to ensure that you get the most out of this service.

Campus Food: I would not say that the food and dining services on WCU's campus are perfect and amazing, but they are definitely great in my opinion. While some nights are a little bit worse than others, the upstairs cafeteria is one of my favorite places to eat. I love the variety of each 'station' and how they change things up every day. The addition of special lunches and dinners throughout each month is really cool. I also love the extra things available to you, such as the cereal bar and the ice cream station. I am a pretty picky eater and I am always able to leave full when I eat in the cafeteria. Other than that, I absolutely love Moe's, Panda Express, and Burger Studio. Unfortunately, those utilize declining balance which I do not have much of so I am unable to eat there as much. The variety of restaurants and food available is really great and I have no major complaints about any of the food services.

College Freshman

Campus Housing: A rating wouldn't be applicable for me becuase I do not live on campus. I am a commuter at my college.

3 College Freshman

Off-Campus Housing: Off-campus housing is really expensive. But I think it is like that basically anywhere you go to college.

5 College Freshman

Off-Campus Dining: Honestly, all you need to know is that Cookout is the place to go. And Kobe is so very yummy.

Administration: I think that Western reaches a reasonable amount of strictness. It's not too bad and it's not too lenient. They follow through with their rules and all that but they aren't constantly down your throat.

3 College Freshman

Party Scene: The parties at Western can get pretty hype at times. But I wouldn't say I have ever felt in any kind of danger. The frats throw really good parties and every party I have been to they have made sure no one was driving drunk and that if you were underage you have an X on your hands so people will know not to provide you with alcohol. I love Western and since there is nothing really to do around us that is close we party it up. Great experience.

4 College Freshman

Scholarships: I had no problems with getting my financial aid worked out and situated. The people at the financial aid office are really good with helping you out if you need it and getting everything taken care of like it needs to be.

3 College Freshman

Campus Food: I came from hardly ever eating out back home to literally having to eat out every single time I wanted to eat. I don't like how there aren't many options that are healthy. Freshens is healthy and all but totally too expensive. McCalisters is really expensive, too. Which Wich's service is insanely awful and the sandwiches aren't even that good. Other than that, though the food is pretty solid. The cafe is not the most awful thing you will ever eat so I'm glad I didn't listen when people would tell me that.

4 College Freshman

Campus Housing: As a freshman, it is really important to find your way around with ease and be confident in knowing where you are going concerning classes and all. I love the way that the freshman dorms are literally right in the middle of everything. You are walking distance from food and where most your classes will be held your freshman year. Definitely a great experience with dorms. You meet new people everyday. Whether it be on your floor or just walking in and out of the dorm. It is great to know a lot of people on campus and half the people I have met have been because we live in the same housing.

One thing that I think Western could work on is having enough room for people. But as a freshman you are basically guaranteed a place on campus. After your freshman year though, they don't really guarantee you a spot. Definitely something they should work on.
