Party Scene

3 College Sophomore

Party Scene: The party scene at Wesleyan has really suffered over the past few years as a result of an increase in security and a crackdown on partying, namely the fraternities. There were three fraternities on campus that used to throw down hard, but ugly events have turned that party grape sour (one is banned from campus, another on probation. They have to now go Co-Ed). That being said, Wesleyan students still turn up at senior houses, program houses and junior houses because there are so many of these units in close proximity to each other. As a result, whole streets can fill up with hundreds of college kids just looking to have a good time and those nights are the best.

In Middletown, if you don't expect too much, you'll love it. Bar night exists, and a few bars are frequented by upperclassmen and the occasional adventurous freshman—but if you come from a city, you're definitely going to notice a difference. Most people don't leave campus when they "go out." As for nightlife on campus, it's pretty hoppin': From dorm room parties to AEPi raves to concerts to experimental dance performances in the '92 to just chillin' on Foss Hill, there's something for everyone.

While Wesleyan may not rank highly on the list of "Schools With Best Beer Pong Tournaments," the party scene is not lacking—it's just different. Many students are determined to "Keep Wesleyan Weird," which involves less bronoodling and more naked drumming. Or—true story—holding hands and running in a big circle really fast, making percussive noises and harmonizing. If that doesn't appeal to you, however, there are also three frats that do traditional fratty things.

Organization Parties
Wesleyan organizations love to throw parties, and they range from "best night ever" to "I wish I'd stayed home and watched a movie." Occasionally, a few groups will join together to throw a larger bash, and these events are much more likely to blow your mind. Students will get invited to these events on Facebook some time in the proceeding weeks, and they take place in houses, rented campus facilities, or frats.
Did You Know?
  • Most seniors have houses around campus, and on weekends, there are often multiple parties going on simultaneously. These parties are occasionally broken up by Public Safety, so be sensible. Some senior houses are on streets completely owned by Wesleyan (designated "Party Streets"), and some are on streets that also house townies ("Quiet Streets"). Neighbors on "Quiet Streets" are much more likely to call in noise complaints.
  • There are countless concerts each semester, where the numerous student bands showcase their talents; student groups also bring in indie bands from all over the Northeast. Eclectic and Beckham Hall are the most likely places to find a concert.

What to Do if You're Not 21What's This?

Thai Gardens

Middletown has a handful of decent coffee shops which are great places to hang out, drink coffee, and talk to locals. Middletown is beginning to develop a reputation as a sort of low-priced hippy town, so talking to people who are around but not part of Wesleyan is always interesting. Places like Thai Gardens are open late and good for late-night snacks and conversation.
