Campus Quality: The campus is absolutely gorgeous!

Campus Quality: The weekend is what Wes students live for. You could see a free film, go to concerts, parties, and plays, or spend a night in with your (male and female) friends watching chick flicks, which I might recommend as a de-stressor for finals week.

Campus Quality: While there could always be more, they're far from unsatisfactory.

Campus Quality: Aesthetically the campus is gorgeous. There are historic buildings to fancy new LEED certified buildings like 41 Wyllys. The Usdan student center is also very new and modern and has everything from a great cafeteria, a post-office, meeting rooms, mailboxes, and comfortable common areas. Foss hill is a popular outdoor gathering place no matter the season. During warmer weather people like to lounge on the hill. During the recent snow people sled down the hill and make snowmen. By far my favorite building on campus is the CFA which doesn't look 40 years old at all because of it's minimalist architecture.

Wesleyan has beautiful, well-maintained facilities. With three libraries (Olin, SciLi, and the Art Library), two main dining halls (Usdan and Summerfields), an enormous gym (Freeman), a great student center (Usdan), lots of lovely old-fashioned academic buildings, and the modern-looking Center for the Arts, there is no shortage of architectural diversity, nor do Wesleyan students ever want for a beautiful place to read, eat, work out, convene, or go to class.

The Usdan Center Activities Board plans weekly events that take place in the Usdan University Center. The events could be anything from airbrush tattoos to celebrations of Hispanic heritage to hosting a famous speaker, and they are always 100 percent free and open to the whole Wesleyan community. The activities board is just one example of how Wesleyan strives to use all of its facilities to the fullest extent.

Movie Theater on Campus
There are two movie theaters on campus: the Goldsmith Family Cinema and the CFA Cinema. The Wesleyan Film Series, run by a board of students, puts on four films a week, Wednesday through Saturday. The films range from recent blockbusters to westerns to classics to foreign films. The CFA Cinema usually shows movies connected to guest speakers or art exhibits.
"Green" Initiatives
The Campus Climate Action Plan describes the specific measures needed to be taken to achieve carbon neutrality on campus. This plan was developed by the Sustainability Advisory Group.
School Slang
  • The Butt Hole: The courtyard between the Butterfield dorms
  • The Butts: The Butterfield dorms
  • The Nics: Nicolson dorms
  • Pre-frosh: Prospective students, pre-freshmen
  • Uz (pronounced "ooze"), or Uzzi, Suzi, Uzdanistan: Usdan University Center
  • Wes: Wesleyan students add "Wes" to the beginning of everything [e.g., "Wesstudents," "Wescrew" (the crew team), "Wesbox" (the campus mailbox), etc.]
  • WestCo: West College Residence Hall
  • The Douglas Cannon: Between South College and Memorial Chapel sits an empty gun mount that once held the Douglas Cannon. Throughout Wesleyan's history, the cannon itself (which is currently among the missing) has since disappeared and reappeared, often in very bizarre places. The tradition of stealing the cannon is a long celebrated rite of passage in the Wesleyan community. In the past, the Douglas Cannon has surfaced in the office of the managing editor of Life magazine, baked into an enormous cake, and presented as a gift to Richard Nixon.
  • WesFest: Hoping to woo the cream of the pre-frosh (freshmen) crop, the University admissions department hosts WesFest every April. WesFest is designed to give admitted students firsthand exposure to the academic and social features of Wesleyan. Incoming freshmen are often pampered, exposed to trendy art exhibits, taken on scenic tours of campus and the surrounding area, and are lectured to by some of today's brightest intellectuals.
  • The Wesleyan Cardinal: The Cardinal was adopted as Wesleyan's mascot and team name in the early 1930s. The Cardinal was originally inspired by a baseball captain named Walter W. Fricke, class of 1933, who purchased a baseball jacket with a Cardinal stitched on the breast pocket. Wesleyan, which was looking to replace "the Methodists" as its official school nickname, soon adopted the Cardinal.
  • Zombies vs. Humans: Students engage in a campus-wide game of "Zombies versus Humans."
Urban Legends
  • "The Shang" is a mysterious structure rumored to be located in the WestCo quad. Only the hippest of the hip are allowed inside (if it even really exists).
  • Several secret societies appear on campus, cropping up every few months to create mischief and the occasional episode of whimsical vandalism.
  • The network of tunnels beneath the school can give the bold student access to just about every building on campus.
  • There are several graveyards actually on campus, and all of them are, of course, haunted.
Favorite Things To Do
Wesleyan is home to many unusual pastimes. The Boogie Club meets regularly to dance in public for the enjoyment of others, and the "Melodrama" is a yearly student-written musical parody of Wesleyan themes in a faux-Western style (the audience is encouraged to throw marshmallows at the actors!). Relaxing on Foss Hill is always popular, as is playing Frisbee on Andrus Field, and full-contact croquet is a popular draw in warmer weather. In the winter, Foss Hill is great for sledding (some even use trays from the dining hall as sleds). Many of the dorms have roof access, and watching the sunset from the roof of your dorm is a great way to cap off a long day of class. Wesleyan is also home to a bizarre catacomb of underground tunnels, and no freshman year would be complete without exploring these hidden coves.

On any given Friday night, there's plenty to do on campus, no matter what your definition of a good time may be. The Film Series shows movies on the weekends, and these tend to draw large crowds. The fraternities on campus usually throw parties, as do many of the program houses. Eclectic, one of Wesleyan's most popular theme houses, usually holds live concerts, as does the Alpha Delt (Alpha Delta Phi) fraternity. The lecture series is great if you're in the mood for some fascinating academic conversation, as are the official University concerts, which include everything from Irish folk music to Javanese gamelan. Almost every weekend, there is a theater production going up, either sponsored by the theater department in the Center for the Arts theater or by Second Stage (Wesleyan's student-run production company) in the '92 Theater, and these performances range from merely amusing to totally awesome. Visiting students are often surprised by how much time Wesleyan students actually spend in their rooms, drinking tea and discussing world events. Big social events are usually a blast, but more intimate gatherings are frequent. It is in these situations that you really get to know people and learn about some of the amazingly creative and unique individuals who attend Wesleyan.

Did You Know?
Most of the buildings on campus are connected by a system of tunnels. Many of these are frequently used by students, such as the CFA tunnels and the ones under the Butterfield dorms, but some-like the ones on College Row-are secret.
