Greek Life: Everyone is Greek. Frats let in anyone who knows 2 or more brothers.

Administration: Campus (Lack of)Strictness – The campus police are not very strict at all. Underage students go to the hospital for alcohol poisoning and get a slap on the wrist. The cops see drunken kids stumbling over campus all the time, the only time they normally intervene is if they think the person is drunk to the point of harming themselves. They're there to help not to punish.

Off-Campus Dining: Off campus dining is awesome. There's a lot of chain restaurants within walking distance of campus and a decent amount of local ones as well. Many of them participate in Taste of Nashville and can be paid for on the Commodore Card.

Administration: Lenient Cops but Punishments Can Be Bad – Cops are never there to try to bust you but if you go to the hospital or something, you could get in some trouble.

Academics: Good Professors Challenging Classes – For econ especially, you get challenging professors that definitely help you understand the topic and are helpful during office hours

Overall Experience: I LOVE VANDY – Vanderbilt has a special combination of great academics mixed with a vibrant social atmosphere. Additionally, the school has a very collegiate feel, but is close enough to downtown Nashville to have a city vibe. It's a fairly big school, but the professors I've had are very helpful and classes are generally small. I recommend Vandy highly

Local Area: Relatively Fun Area – Vandy is on the city outskirts, so it has a very collegiate feel but is close to downtown Nashville. There are lots of restaurants and bars close by, but unless you're 21 or have a good fake it's hard to go out off campus since most places are 21 and up. There are a lot of parties on campus though, particularly at the frats.

Overall Experience: Great Balance Between Work and Social Life. This wasn't my top-choice school, but the financial aid package was far more generous than the other offers given to me. After a semester, the balance is great. You need to keep yourself focused and on-track. A 4.0 GPA is hard to get and the academics are actually pretty tough to keep up with (unlike your state university). If you know how to keep up the balance though, you can get 3.0+ GPA and have a ton of fun on the weekends with your friends.

Transportation: Not Many Options to Get Off-Campus If You Don't Have Your Own Car. It's not very convenient to get off-campus unless you have your own car. However, even then, you're paying outrageous prices per semester to have a parking spot on campus. The parking spot is far away from where you live normally. It's typically easier to just find a friend to give you rides.

Off-Campus Dining: Plenty of Places to Eat, on the Card as Well. There's plenty of places to eat off-campus which are on the card as well. A program Vanderbilt University has set up called Tastes in Nashville partners with different restaurants. Each semester, freshman students are allotted $200 in meal money which can be used for ordering online delivery take-out or for going to the different restaurants to eat.

Drug Safety: Drinking Overpowers, Drugs Are Present but More Hidden – Honestly, I think that Vandy somehow does a great job at not having a drug-addicted campus. Drinking is very popular and obvious (i.e. tailgates) but that still has many policies and police enforcement and greek life rules. There's definitely some peer pressure to drink, but if you do not want to you can easily avoid the whole greek party scene, although it dominates and creates the fun Vandy culture. However, drug use centers most heavily on weed, and then upperclassmen frat boys and some rare sorority girls are known for dabbling in cocaine. However, it is never very apparent and isn't talked about all that much. Weed is definitely more visible than coke, but its still not in your face.

Campus Housing: Spoiled as Freshmen – The Commons (freshman campus built in 2008) are by far the nicest dorms I've seen at any school, and we are so spoiled to get to live there as freshmen. And while upperclassmen dorms are outdated, I loved living in the sophomore Branscomb quad because you are at the heart of campus and completely connected to every dorm there. Also, half the rooms are connected with bathrooms which is great. They are now rebuilding the other half of sophomore housing, so that will be great when its finished but will create some problems until then. Junior/senior housing in Towers is great because its suite-style with own bathrooms, kitchens, and a main room. Morgan/Lewis upperclassmen housing is nice suites also, just in a worse location.

Health & Safety: Health & Safety – There are definitely some parts of main campus that are less well-lit. However, I usually make a point to either take a Vandyvan back to my dorm or walk with friends, but I've never felt unsafe.

Greek Life: If you're a boy, you pretty much have to be in a fraternity to party. Sororities are huge too, but not necessary for girls. Greek life dominates the social scene and fraternities host pretty much every party, on and off campus (even bar events are sponsored by fraternities.) That said, they have sick parties.

Party Scene: Incredible. If you want to party any night of the week, there's something going on somewhere. Weekends are insane (mostly fraternities). Tuesdays and Thursdays are bar nights.

Diversity: They try to make it diverse, but everyone sticks to their own race for the most part. There are a ton of Malaysians, but they literally don't hang out with anyone but each other. Not many gay people. Those who are are not really accepted by other guys but have lots of girl friends.

Academics: Legit Program – Vanderbilt's political science department is one of the best in the nation. Obviously Vanderbilt is only for the intellectually competent, and classes are hard but interesting. Poli-Sci courses generally require a lot of reading, but grades are based on only a few big assignments per semester.

Administration: Once you're an upperclassman, if you're not doing something extraordinarily stupid you'll be fine

Campus Quality: The campus itself is gorgeous, especially in the spring and summer when everything is in full bloom and green

Scholarships: Vandy doesn't give out many full-rides, but they guarantee 100% demonstrated need-based aid, and they really follow through. So, don't let the price scare you, Vanderbilt will give you what you need without having to take out loans.

Technology: Fantastic Wireless – You can literally get wifi anywhere on campus, even the back corner of the basement of the science center... great coverage.

Campus Housing: Expensive and Same Price for Each Kind of Housing – expensive. Good housing for freshman but the ones for upperclassmen vary in quality.

Guys & Girls: Really Attractive – I have yet to see a non-attractive female of any sort.

Parking: Student parking is typical, in a parking garage with a specific spot and the prices are pretty good. There is plenty of parking areas surrounding campus as well so if you are a commuter you won't have a long walk to class.

Any student beginning a college career will pass through the phase of questioning his or her decision. For Vanderbilt students, this phase is a short one. The beauty and excitement of campus quickly pushes away any negative thoughts. Southern hospitality is alive and strong around Vanderbilt, and for those out-of-towners, it’s usually a welcome surprise. Taking the time to meet new people, whether they are Southern natives or people from across the country, will make the transition from high school to college a lot smoother. Finding your niche at any college is the most important thing to having a successful four years. Vanderbilt is big enough to accommodate almost anyone’s desires and small enough to make this campus feel like home for the years you spend here.

While Vanderbilt has a lot of positive qualities, it isn’t the best choice for everyone. Choosing Vanderbilt means choosing to be in a situation where name-brand clothes and high-end cars have a certain amount of importance. Most students come from white upper-class families, and while they may not all fit the stereotype of wealthy snobs, money is in abundance for most on campus. More than anything, however, choosing Vanderbilt means choosing an extremely difficult and intense academic institution. You will pull your share of all-nighters, sit through any number of obvious “weed-out courses,” stress out over harsh grading curve, and panic when professors refuse to move deadlines despite countless other exams and papers. But thankfully, Vanderbilt embodies a work-hard, play-hard lifestyle. The second you make it through the more hellacious periods of school, there will be countless opportunities to throw all cares aside and enjoy your time at Vanderbilt.
