Off-Campus Dining: The dining surrounding campus is awesome! Lot's of local and authentic restaurants that have decent pricing.

Party Scene: There is always something to do. Whether it be during the week or on weekends, you can find someone who is doing something. One of the perks of such a large school.

Academics: It's a rather large workload but UW is great at providing internship and job opportunities after school is finished.

Drug Safety: There is a drug and alcohol scene but it's not overly huge. It definitely isn't a big deal if someone doesn't partake in it.

Majors: I am a biology physiology major which is actually an open major(meaning you don't have to apply in). This is really nice because I don't have to worry about getting accepted or not. However the class load is pretty hard and you have to get pretty good grades in order to graduate with the degree.

Majors: I love the science program here. It's a lot of work but you are given a lot of opportunities to learn and get help.

Diversity: Our campus is extremely diverse, something that the University is known for.

Off-Campus Housing: The off-campus housing is pretty good but parking in Seattle is never very easy. The nice thing about off-campus housing is that it is conveniently located near grocery stores, shopping, and public transportation.

Local Area: I love where UW is located. There is always something to do and places to go.

Health & Safety: Safety/theft is an issue on campus. However it is usually not something that the university can change itself but rather is how safe the area surrounding campus is. I feel pretty safe on campus during the day and at night I never walk alone.

Administration: Campus strictness really varies based on where you live and what kind of classes you take. There are all sorts of different academic policies however we are never really told what they are.

Health & Safety: There are sometimes crimes happening near campus, mostly armed robberies and thefts. There are night safety escort services available to students, and the dorm buildings are secure, but it can be dangerous when walking out at night.

Off-Campus Dining: There's always someplace new to try, and the Ave is full of various restaurants and dining places. The Ave is right next to the dorms and a short distance from campus, so it's very convenient for students. There are always other restaurants only a bus ride away, so the possibilities seem endless.

Academics: Difficult courses, but great professors and education. Workload can be heavy sometimes, but students can learn to balance their workload. There are plenty of tutors and study spaces available. Lots of help available.

Local Area: Lots of restaurants everywhere, dorms very close to campus - 5 minute walking distance, hundreds of student organizations and clubs, dorms have good security, beautiful campus, friendly people.

Overall Experience: I have met many people that I get a long with very well and can relate to. The school is both in the city and feels like it is close to nature. Unless I had gotten in to a school with a better department in my field of study I would definitely pick this school again. I love the atmosphere, the students, the professors, and the overall experience.

Diversity: Overall the campus is very diverse in all areas. However, there are some ethnic groups, including African Americans and Hispanics that are underrepresented.

Academics: I am in a small major so it is easier to meet the faculty and build a relationship with them. They are all very supportive of the small number of students interested in their subjects. The classes are fast paced but not overwhelming.

Weather: This year has been dry so I have not experienced the full effect of Seattle rain but even when it does rain it is not too bad. When the sun is out it is very nice. It can get a little depressing sometimes when the skye are cloudy for days on end with no precipitation or sunshine.

Campus Housing: I have stayed in both an old dorm and a new dorm and have really enjoyed both. The new dorms have a lot of great amenities like a private bathroom in each room and the rooms are more spacious. The old dorms are also relatively spacious however with mostly mild inconveniences that one can get used to.

Academics: All my professors so far have been engaging, passionate about their field, and highly competent. The curriculum is interesting. Registration is relatively easy and there are helpful tools for finding courses that meet requirements. The workload is good matches well with the course level. There are many places to study and lots of options for extra help outside of class.

Local Area: Seattle is a very pleasant city. It is not too crowded but has all the conveniences of a major city. The public bus system is great and will get you wherever you need to go. There are a lot of nature areas the offset the feel of the city nicely. The locals are all very friendly towards college students. There are several great museums, the Space Needle, and Pike's Market to see.

Health & Safety: There seems to be very little crime on campus and the small amount of crime around campus seems to be most prominent near the fraternities and sororities. The police send out notices when there has been a crime and everyone is given a safety presentation during orientation. I feel safe walking across the main parts of campus at night because they are well lit and there are generally other students around. There are services you can call to either walk or drive you places you need to go around campus at night.

Off-Campus Dining: There are tons of great places to eat in Seattle. They can be expensive though and difficult to get to, and difficult to get a table. I don't think anywhere gives student discounts...

3 College Junior

Local Area: I think Seattle could be a fantastic place to live if you like cities. My life has been focused on rural living and I am much more comfortable in that environment. The cost of living is terrifying and traffic is always an issue. It's a pain to get around because parking is difficult and because of traffic a 15 min drive can take an hour. There are people everywhere and no open spaces.

Similar to the academic experience at the UW, the University is so huge that it's virtually impossible to predict what a student will think of the school. As the quotations attest, some people fall in love from day one and have to tear themselves away on graduation day, while others drag themselves through school as a chore and can't wait to get out into the post-college world, but it seems, like most things at this school, that it truly is what you make of it. Perhaps for a less socially-motivated person, UW isn't the ideal school. In a bigger environment, maybe it helps to be a little more outgoing-introduce yourself to people in class, meet some people at parties; you sort of have to put yourself out there in order to get anything back.

In all, if a student is determined to make his or her time at UW a positive social experience, it's definitely within the realm of possibilities to do so. There are so many groups to join, parties to go to, and people to meet that there's basically an endless list of social opportunities. There are always more people to meet, so if you don't want to get pigeonholed in a certain crowd, you can move on to a new one. At the same time, however, the size of the school can be daunting for more socially-intimidated students. Just as easy as it is to get out there and meet people, it's not too difficult to get holed up in a dorm room and end up being fairly antisocial. Overall, the key to having a good experience at UW is getting involved and experiencing as many things as possible. After it all adds up, you can allow UW to be a negative experience or you can craft it into your personal haven.
