Administration: I think the administration will not interfere in anything you decide to do with your time unless it begins to affect other peoples' time. Quietly drinking in dorms with friends is common, and many RAs seem not to care, but don't hold parties in your room because you will disturb the people who don't partake. If you are mindful and respectful of others, the administration will largely let you make your own adult decisions.

Open drug/alcohol use, assault, or disrespecting professors/administrators will get you reported.

Administration: UVa prides itself on its honor code so it's very strict.

5 College Junior

Administration: The police are there to keep us safe. They aren't "out to get" any of the students, and they truly only involve themselves if they feel that someone is in serious danger. I always feel safe knowing that the campus police are there for us. The RA's are usually fairly lenient on alcohol use in dorms, and visitations are normally not monitored. However, the school has zero tolerance for honor code violations, and the honor code is strictly enforced.

4 College Freshman

Administration: Administration is pretty lenient as long you do not obnoxiously disobey the school's rules, especially when it comes to the honor code. Strictness also depends on your RA.

3 College Freshman

Administration: UVA cares more about cheating on homework than underage drinking or drug issues. I feel like the priorities are a little mixed up at uva.

Students at UVA find that the authorities are generally very lenient, especially where alcohol is concerned. In many ways, campus police act more like surrogate parents than strict enforcers. They are mainly concerned with safety, and they are definitely not out to get anyone. RAs and other student security enforcers can be far more strict and obnoxious than the police are, which is the reverse of what you usually find at colleges. If you’re caught drinking publicly at UVA, the police are just as likely to ignore it or chuckle and make you toss your cup as they are to actually detain you.

UVA’s administration presses down hard on all hard-core drug use, however, and security is more reflective of this. Don’t expect security officials to look the same way at drugs as they may at alcohol. The primary goal of UVA security is to keep campus safe for everyone, and any run-ins you may have will reflect this. Whether you are of age or under 21, be aware that you can get arrested for being drunk in public, carrying an open container, or using/lending a fake ID. Going out to bars underage when you have been warned that the ABC is out patrolling is never a good idea either.
