Scholarships: Just email or call Student Financial Aid, and they will respond rapidly. Communication is key!

Academics: I'm studying foreign affairs with a minor in East Asian Studies. I'm also potentially looking at the Frank Batten School of leadership and public policy for a graduate degree. The study abroad and internship opportunities are incredible. The workload is very heavy, and studies are taken seriously pretty much across the board at UVa. Language teachers are strong, and the academic buildings are maintained well.

Local Area: Charlottesville is a major food location, considering it's a fairly small city. Local restaurants like the C&O, Bang, Maya, Tavola, Ten, are a really special part of Charlottesville. The downtown area is a typically nice place to spend an evening, where lots of live music happens, and an awesome market on Saturday mornings. The Corner near grounds is good for eating and going out at night. There are also growing areas in Belmont and along West Main, each with distinctive qualities, but everywhere is friendly.

Health & Safety: There are many programs trying to bring awareness of sexual assault up. Due to recent events (a kidnapping of a UVa student), police and safety services have been increased. In general, students feel safe on grounds.

Administration: Because many aspects of administration that are typically school run are actually student run, there is a general feeling of respect and accountability for rules. The entire honor code system is student run, for example, and generally highly respected. Most students feel that lying, cheating and stealing are very wrong and will stand up against it. Honesty is big. There is also a judiciary committee of students that reviews breaches of the rules. Of course there is also an important line of admins backing these groups, but the President and Dean of students (Sullivan and Groves) are both highly revered among the student body.

Campus Quality: The school is beautiful. I am in awe everyday.

Campus Food: Some times swiping into dinning halls I regret it instantly once I see the option. They are a hit and miss. Sometimes the hours suck. Plus dollars and meal exchange are a life saver and there are plenty of better tasting options outside of the dining halls that are UVA dinning affiliated.

Diversity: UVa is a school of self segregation. Races stick together and look down and mock those of their race who don't hang out with their own. If you are a minority who wants to break the mold and hang out with mostly white students and join a IFC/ISC there is nothing wrong with it and people are very accepting of that. Some frats are said to be racist, but some of the top Sororities have members of diverse background. Just go where you feel comfortable is the only advice I can give.

Guys & Girls: Some times I walk around and fall in love 10 times a day. There are a lot of attractive guys, but they tend to only date or hookup with very attractive white females. But their is a variety of attractiveness.

Scholarships: Im here on a full ride, so I cant complain about anything. UVa has the money to give to those who need it, as if it was an Ivy. UVA needs to make it more known just how much money they are willing to give to lower income students, so that they attract more. Although, apparently they are cutting funds to access UVA , but the rules are complicated.

3 College Sophomore

Off-Campus Housing: Its so hard to find a place everyone agrees with if you aren't dealing with people who can afford anything. Where you live of grounds can sometimes define who you are as a person or how wealthy you are, which is dumb, but its UVA, what more do you expect. The nice places fill up fast, and its all very expensive if you want to live somewhere close and nice.

3 College Sophomore

Campus Housing: The overall experience depends on where you end up. Its random so you can't influence it at all. There are 3 main 1st year options and they each have their perks, new dorms, old dorms and gooch dillard. G-D doesn't have any perks in my opinion. Upperclass man housing is okay, and some are further than others.

2 College Sophomore

Health & Safety: Its seems like I am always getting updates about a sexual assaults from the school. I also hear about people stoping guys from taking advantage of girls. Some houses use grain alcohol, are rumored to use date rape, or are creepy, but I haven't had that happen to me personally. Everyone has been more aware with everything happening recently with Hannah Graham.

5 College Sophomore

Athletics: There are 3 larger gyms to choose from for students. There are plenty of fields and grassy areas as well as trails for student uses.

3 College Sophomore

Majors: Its hard working towards a major when you aren't sure you will be accepted into the program. The school is made up of smaller schools and programs that limit the amount of students accepted into them. Especially Comm school and E-school. UVA also has very generic majors available since its a school heavily driven on producing white collar workers who all want the same thing.

4 College Sophomore

Greek Life: Frat houses are pretty run down. Im surprised people actually live in them and shower in those bathrooms. But I'm sure the sorority houses are very nice. Parties are fun, but they aren't everything. As long as you have connections to greeks you can get into them. You party with who your friends are. Its no fun parting in a house full of people you don't know.

5 College Sophomore

Local Area: Charlottesville is Amazing as a college town. Its hard to think of Cville as a town other than UVa. There is a lot of school spirit off grounds and you really feel it. Coming from a large city, it is a lot quieter and harder to get around, but there is a bus system, uva as well as Charlottesville, that gets you where you would need to go. Living here gets better once you have a car.

3 College Sophomore

Administration: Police officers don't even break up parties after the EMT have come to take a passed out person to the hospital. If you aren't acting stupid they will leave you alone. Drinking in the dorms is stupid unless you are discreetly doing it to pre game, but other than that, UVA doesn't throw "dorm" parties like other schools do. Parking sucks. If its a big lecture don't be surprised if during a test you have never seen the faces present in the room or cant find a seat.

4 College Sophomore

Party Scene: I have had my fare share of enjoyable frat experiences. As well as boring ones. Being the only african american in the room at a frat house did feel very weird, but I never felt out of place completely. Aside from Frats, club sports, and black Frats, I haven't been to large parties on that scale that were held by any other group on grounds. Bars are always on option. There are three that most people go to and the same group of people tend to go to each one. But there are plenty of smaller parties where people just drink and have fun.

4 College Sophomore

Off-Campus Dining: The Corner has plenty of options. These smaller options are more popular for late night occasions, but there are a good amount of dine in places for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Barracks and the Downtown Mall also have plenty of unique options to choose from. Barracks have more chain restaurants as well as up route 29.

4 College Freshman

Health & Safety: The campus is actually very safe. Everyone is always looking out for one another. The university has gotten some bad press on campus security recently, but in actuality it is very secure.

5 College Freshman

Off-Campus Dining: The Corner has some great places to eat that are all quite cheap. They range from quick meals, to little breakfast places, to sit-down restaurants. Very few chains can be seen here. Barracks has many options as does route 29. Downtown provides some great options for pricier dining and entertainment.

5 College Freshman

Party Scene: It's UVa. Enough said. Tons of parties every weekend. With the wide variety of parties it is literally impossible to find a place where you will not fit in.

5 College Freshman

Guys & Girls: UVa is the premier Southern Preppy school. The school is all about the work hard play hard lifestyle. Everyone here likes to enjoy life, but is serious about work and doing well. Everyone is quite friendly and open to every lifestyle and creed.

Campus Housing: The campus is absolutely fantastic. It is gorgeous and you live the way Thomas Jefferson intended. The only downside is that the dining hall food could be better.

Overall ExperienceWhat's this?

View student contributors

Most students talk about the wonderful experiences and positive feelings they associate with UVA. The University has some of the most devoted alumni in the country. Of course, there are those who wished they had gone somewhere else and those who were turned off by things such as the lack of diversity, the prominence of Greek life, student naïvety, or the pretentiousness that is, in fact, present on campus. Those who really like UVA appreciate its traditions, the friendly and outgoing atmosphere, the beautiful setting, and the outstanding academic environment. Students definitely have their share of rough, sad, or aggravating moments at UVA, but when all is said and done, many claim that they couldn’t imagine being anywhere else.

There are so many different experiences here—putting together an unorganized, student-run play with remarkable self-motivated students, studying abroad, drinking wine and chatting with a favorite professor in his/her home, tutoring at a local school, or sunning out on the lawn with friends—that, in the end, are some of the many reasons why students are happy at UVA. If you come to UVA, be prepared to take the good with the bad. In my view, the positive aspects of the University outweigh the negatives, and the environment is as vibrant and intelligent as it was when Thomas Jefferson founded it well over a century ago.
