4 College Freshman

Overall Experience: I have really enjoyed my classes here at UVa! I am always in awe by how my professors are leading researchers in their field. I am really getting an amazing education. You really can take classes here on just about everything and anything you could ever think to, and I think that is an opportunity that you just can pass up on. The classes range from large lectures for really popular classes to small 15-18 people classes for those classes that really require one on one teacher student help. That variety has been one of the coolest experiences I have had here.

Overall Experience: Going to UVa is an amazing opportunity because going into the work place people know that you're going to be ready to work. I am just a first year, but I know that the professors are really good about getting upperclassmen plugged into internships and jobs early on so that they are ready to start working when they graduate. It has been really cool for me to see my older friends talk about how really big named companies are contacting them because they know hard workers will come out of UVa.

Campus Housing: The housing on grounds is definitely diverse to say the least. There are a lot of discrepancies because some of the dorms are a lot nicer than others and there is just really not a fair way to sort people into the brand new dorms (which I was lucky enough to be placed in this year) and then into the dorms that have been here since the University practically opened. Some dorms have AC, some do not. Some are closer to classes, some are a lot farther away. Some of the individual buildings have laundry or mailing services in them but if the individual building doesn't have it, then a building near by will have it. All of the buildings have pros and cons and there really isn't anything we can do about it because we really can't choose where we live anyways.

Athletics: GO HOOS! I think the easiest way to describe our athletic involvement is just simply by how we all still go to football games even when we know that we're going to be put through an emotional rollercoaster the entire time. You will see students sporting all sorts of athletic gear all year round, and you can count on us singing the "Good Old Song" at the end of every game, no matter what the outcome was. There is just something about the way the Cavalier community sticks together through thick and thin that honestly makes everything worth while.

Overall Experience: One look at the University of Virginia and you will understand why it is an amazing school. It is so beautiful, but more than that the education you will get at a public school is absolutely incredible. I sit in my classes and I am in awe by the opportunities I have with my professors. My professors are all experts in their field and they are all leading researchers in whatever they are doing; where else will you have an opportunity like this. At that, the price is pretty much perfect for what you're getting. However, coming from a middle class family can be kind of difficult just because college is getting pricey and UVA is a little more prestigious. It is so worth is because the education and community is like nothing else.

Academics: Great professors, but they are the harshest graders ever.

Diversity: The school is overwhelmingly white.

Drug Safety: I'm not really sure of it.

Health & Safety: I always feel safe on campus, even when walking back to my dorm late at night. The students take the honor code very seriously here, which benefits everybody.

Overall Experience: Some courses are just better than others, it depends on which professor is teaching. In general, though, I've had a very pleasant experience and have enjoyed most of my classes.

Overall Experience: There are career and internship fairs every semester which provide current students with ways to get connected to alumni or even possibly secure a job after graduation.

Campus Housing: The dorm in which I live isn't necessarily the best on campus, but it has the necessary amenities, plus A/C.

Greek Life: Our Greek life has come under scrutiny in recent years, so a lot of previously fun aspects of Greek life have been altered.

Athletics: I really enjoy UVA's athletics and fan base - sporting events are never short on fun.

Overall Experience: The culture at UVA is very unique, but I see myself as more of a city person, so I find the campus and people to be slightly less interesting than a city-based college.

Most students talk about the wonderful experiences and positive feelings they associate with UVA. The University has some of the most devoted alumni in the country. Of course, there are those who wished they had gone somewhere else and those who were turned off by things such as the lack of diversity, the prominence of Greek life, student naïvety, or the pretentiousness that is, in fact, present on campus. Those who really like UVA appreciate its traditions, the friendly and outgoing atmosphere, the beautiful setting, and the outstanding academic environment. Students definitely have their share of rough, sad, or aggravating moments at UVA, but when all is said and done, many claim that they couldn’t imagine being anywhere else.

There are so many different experiences here—putting together an unorganized, student-run play with remarkable self-motivated students, studying abroad, drinking wine and chatting with a favorite professor in his/her home, tutoring at a local school, or sunning out on the lawn with friends—that, in the end, are some of the many reasons why students are happy at UVA. If you come to UVA, be prepared to take the good with the bad. In my view, the positive aspects of the University outweigh the negatives, and the environment is as vibrant and intelligent as it was when Thomas Jefferson founded it well over a century ago.
