4 College Freshman

Transportation: The buses are free and pretty nice. Sometimes the buses do not show up at the scheduled times which is frustrating.

3 College Freshman

Drug Safety: Many first years drink too much and do not know when to stop.

4 College Freshman

Weather: Very moderate and not way too hot or cold.

2 College Freshman

Overall Experience: Lots of competition and stress. My dislike comes from mostly personal reasons. My advice is to consider whether or not a large school is really right for you.

Party Scene: Lots of nightlife and good part scene. Frats are easy to find, but if you're a boy it can be difficult to get in.

Local Area: Lots of entertainment around Charlottesville. Always something to do if you look for it.

Transportation: On grounds transportation good, but hard to get out of Charlottesville.

Drug Safety: There isn't peer pressure to use drugs or alcohol. I have many friends who do neither but the option is always there and most students drink and some do drugs too but you don't see much of that unless you're looking for it.

Guys & Girls: It is a very athletic and preppy school. I thought I wouldn't fit into the preppy scene but now I am so glad I chose to go here anyway because I feel as if that exact scene has helped mold me into a more mature person.

Academics: I love my German classes. They are very fun and informative. The economics program totally depends on which teacher you sign up under and could go either way.

Academics: You can create your own major if it isn't already offered.

Majors: I'm looking into graduating with a double major in Economics and German. From there I may go into real estate, international business, or micro finance in Africa.

Local Area: UVA is definitely important to the town of Charlottesville, but it's not the "whole town" by any means. There are so many diverse things to do!

Off-Campus Dining: There is a lot of restaurants on the Corner, about a 10 minute walk from first-year dorms. Most are open late, and it's truly catered to students.

4 College Freshman

Weather: Typical Virginia weather; kind of unpredictable. But when it's on it's on!

5 College Freshman

Diversity: Tons of diversity and places for students to share.

5 College Freshman

Overall Experience: The best decision I've ever made.

5 College Freshman

Academics: Professors are very willing to help students.

4 College Freshman

Guys & Girls: There's all sorts of people, but theres a lot of preppy people.

Party Scene: UVA is a party school, theres a reason playboy ranked us #1 a year ago. But don't let that discourage you. There's other things to do if you want to, and we don't let it interfere with our studies.

Campus Housing: The new dorms that are like 5 or less years old are like hotels. The old dorms aren't as nice, but they are a bit closer to classes. You usually defend old/new based on where you lived your first year.

4 College Freshman

Athletics: The facilities are nice, we have awesome teams for most sports, but our football has been lacking lately.

2 College Freshman

Parking: There's not much parking...it kind of sucks.

Overall ExperienceWhat's this?

View student contributors

Most students talk about the wonderful experiences and positive feelings they associate with UVA. The University has some of the most devoted alumni in the country. Of course, there are those who wished they had gone somewhere else and those who were turned off by things such as the lack of diversity, the prominence of Greek life, student naïvety, or the pretentiousness that is, in fact, present on campus. Those who really like UVA appreciate its traditions, the friendly and outgoing atmosphere, the beautiful setting, and the outstanding academic environment. Students definitely have their share of rough, sad, or aggravating moments at UVA, but when all is said and done, many claim that they couldn’t imagine being anywhere else.

There are so many different experiences here—putting together an unorganized, student-run play with remarkable self-motivated students, studying abroad, drinking wine and chatting with a favorite professor in his/her home, tutoring at a local school, or sunning out on the lawn with friends—that, in the end, are some of the many reasons why students are happy at UVA. If you come to UVA, be prepared to take the good with the bad. In my view, the positive aspects of the University outweigh the negatives, and the environment is as vibrant and intelligent as it was when Thomas Jefferson founded it well over a century ago.
