Drug Safety: You don't have to know about it if you hang out with the right people

Campus Housing: The location of dorms is absolutely unbeatable. Old Dorms do not have AC, but this isn't a major problem during a majority of the school year. There are a ton of brand new dorms that just opened this year.

Transportation: The bus system is pretty reliable. I only drive 3 hours to and from school from my hometown, so I don't have any experience with long-distance transportation.

Athletics: Practically everyone at UVa is regularly active, and the IM Rec Sports Dept. never ceases to emphasize the right reasons for staying active and working out. The football games aren't very popular, but basketball is huge. The distance from grounds to the baseball fields makes that a less popular varsity sport.

Scholarships: I received a lot of aid once I got through the process of applying. I still owe a lot, but I am grateful for the generosity of UVa with its students, compared to other schools.

Greek Life: Greek life is great at UVa. I am not involved, but even those who are are open and welcoming of anyone who is not involved. It can be cliquey, but for the most part, its welcoming and fun.

4 College Sophomore

Administration: UVa administrators want to keep all students safe, but are understanding and forgiving in many situations. They want us to be safe and to learn from our mistakes more than to be punished.

4 College Sophomore

Party Scene: Nightlife is great at UVa. You can walk to fraternity houses and bars, so drinking and driving is rarely a problem. The buses and cabs are wonderful and run pretty late on weekend nights.

Off-Campus Housing: Off-campus housing at UVa has two poles. Jefferson Park Avenue is nice, quiet, and affordable. The housing near the social scene of the corner is much more expensive and not as nice. You pay more to live in the social scene, and a lot of the houses near the corner are very run down. However, many apt. complexes are brand new and nice.

Technology: Printing is readily available at several libraries at UVa. It is affordable and convenient. I never have a hard time accessing wifi at UVa, and you can get online anywhere on grounds, inside or outside. The network is quick, safe, and protected.

Transportation: Buses constantly run and there are several bus lines to go to different areas of grounds.

Technology: Printing costs money, so I have my own printer. The network will go out for quick moments or hours at a time, but internet is available almost everywhere around grounds.

Athletics: The football team isn't very good, but numerous of our other sports teams are excellent and put on great games against their opponents. Athletic facilities are nice and accessible.

Health & Safety: Grounds is a safe place, but one should always be with at least one other person but groups of three are best at night. There are police and security systems protecting students if anything bad would happen, which does not occur much.

4 College Freshman

Diversity: People are accepting of all types of people. Most students respect the view of others.

Local Area: Charlottesville is a wonderful town. There is a lot to it that I have not seen.

4 College Freshman

Off-Campus Dining: There are a variety of chain and local restaurants fulfilling whatever craving you might have. Costs are always more than college students can afford, but all the chain restaurants aren't bad.

3 College Freshman

Greek Life: Greek life is big for the parties. People go out to fraternities and sororities.

4 College Freshman

Off-Campus Housing: There are various options depending on what you want.

4 College Freshman

Weather: It's much warmer from where I live, which I love. It doesn't rain much in the fall or winter, but rains lots of summer evenings. There are warm days randomly throughout the winter, which are a nice break from the cold. It can be in the teens in the morning and get up to the high forties during the day, but once the sun drops, the temperature drops drastically.

4 College Freshman

Scholarships: Entering first years have to fill out FAFSA and collegeboard forms, but they are similar. The subsequent years there is a UVa form along with FAFSA. Make sure it's done on time and update any outside awards you've gotten.

Technology: The school doesn't supply computers, but the program called Cav Computers is a really reliable source to buy a laptop through.

Campus Housing: Gooch/Dillard is best if you don't mind a walk!

Party Scene: The nightlife is great if you like to drink; it's still pretty good if you don't drink.

Overall ExperienceWhat's this?

View student contributors

Most students talk about the wonderful experiences and positive feelings they associate with UVA. The University has some of the most devoted alumni in the country. Of course, there are those who wished they had gone somewhere else and those who were turned off by things such as the lack of diversity, the prominence of Greek life, student naïvety, or the pretentiousness that is, in fact, present on campus. Those who really like UVA appreciate its traditions, the friendly and outgoing atmosphere, the beautiful setting, and the outstanding academic environment. Students definitely have their share of rough, sad, or aggravating moments at UVA, but when all is said and done, many claim that they couldn’t imagine being anywhere else.

There are so many different experiences here—putting together an unorganized, student-run play with remarkable self-motivated students, studying abroad, drinking wine and chatting with a favorite professor in his/her home, tutoring at a local school, or sunning out on the lawn with friends—that, in the end, are some of the many reasons why students are happy at UVA. If you come to UVA, be prepared to take the good with the bad. In my view, the positive aspects of the University outweigh the negatives, and the environment is as vibrant and intelligent as it was when Thomas Jefferson founded it well over a century ago.
