Off-Campus Dining: Lots of great options around the Corner, but if you get bored of that the Downtown Mall or Barracks shopping mall are a quick free bus ride away.

Off-Campus Housing: Off grounds housing can be expensive, but it is absolutely worth it. The freedom of living on your own is great. I live in a single apartment and it has been the best experience.

Administration: The administration is great. Students get total control of their college experience with very little interference. T. Sully is the best president we could ask for.

Local Area: Charlottesville has so many things to do, and the town is very friendly to the students. It's not a surprise that Charlottesville was ranked the #1 college town this year.

Athletics: Though UVA football hasn't been great at football, the rest of our sports are some of the best in the ACC and across the NCAA; including the basketball program that went far in March Madness, baseball that went to the College World Series, Swimming that always destroys the ACC, Lacrosse/Tennis, etc.

Party Scene: There are definitely a lot of parties, particularly frats. However, there are also club houses and other organizations that throw down parties. It's important to get involved with activities there to get invited to parties as well.

Guys & Girls: Girls here are absolutely beautiful and definitely know how to have fun and work hard. They got the whole package: smart, fit, and overall good-looking. UVA does not disappoint.

Campus Housing: The quality of housing depends greatly on where you live. Old dorms have the best sense of community and they are closer to classes but they have no AC and are very dirty. Housing for first year is assigned randomly. Because off campus housing is ridiculously over priced, it is super important to stay on top of deadlines for on-campus housing when applying after your first-year. You also apply to one of the residential college for any year.

Local Area: Charlottesville offers a lot for students who want to leave the suburbs but aren't ready for the city. There are local activities going on all the time and because of the UVa bus system and the free trolley to the Corner, students have easy access to the local area.

Because UVa has established a good relationship with Charlottesville many people are welcoming of the students and the university is a big part of the community. Small businesses often offer special deals to UVa students because of that relationship. Even as an out-of-state student, I still feel a part of the Charlottesville community.

Local Area: Charlottesville is a great little town with so much to do in the area. There is Humpback Rock, Carter Mountain, endless vineries and plenty of places to go hike. Barracks Road Shopping Center is a fun place to go shopping with friends as well as Fashion Square Mall. The Downtown Mall is a great outdoors mall with a historic feel. There are tons, and tons of great restaurants in the area as well. Richmond and Washington D.C. are close enough that they are great for weekend trips.

Diversity: UVA is a fairly diverse campus. There are a lot of international students, but for the most part, a lot of the students fit into a typically "UVA" stereotype/mold (NOVA).

Campus Housing: As a first year, you either live in old dorms (McCormick Residencies), new dorms (Alderman Residencies), or Gooch/Dillard (which is really far away). This is based on a lottery system, and while new dorms are the most desired, everyone tends to love their dorms. After first year, there are on-grounds apartment options like Lambeth and Bice, but there are also off grounds apartments (and for the most part, the off grounds housing is closer to classes than on-grounds). Many people think they have to sign up for an apartment October of their first year, but this is not necessarily true, there is plenty of time to decide who you want to live with and where. Most of the off grounds housing is behind the corner, and is convenient for social life. By third or forth year, many people get houses. There are plenty of options for housing.

Athletics: There is a lot of school spirit at UVA and traditions are huge here. While our football team may not currently be on a winning streak...football games are still a big deal because of the tradition of "guys in ties and girls in pearls" where there student body dresses up to go to the games. Many alumni also come back for each game and tailgating is very prevalent. Basketball and baseball are both well known teams and basketball especially gets a lot of attention from the student body.

Party Scene: There is always something to do at night - whether you are a first year/second year looking for a frat party or an upperclassman that wants to go out to a bar with friends. Frat parties can typically be found any Thursday, Friday, or Saturday (and sometimes Wednesdays). They can sometimes be difficult to get into (if you are a guy, or the party is already relatively full - and they start getting selective about who can get in), but for the most part, if you know someone, or are in a group of mainly girls, you should be fine. The corner is always lively at night and is a great place for upperclassmen.

Academics: Academics are definitely a strong point at UVA. Professors are extremely knowledgeable and, for the most part, willing to help. While students know how to have fun, academics never suffer and are understood to be a priority. There is a strong competitive atmosphere when it comes to academics and achieving a 4.0 is sought after, but extremely difficult because of the high caliber of the classes. Its not ranked one of the top public schools in the nation for nothing, UVA deserves all the recognition it gets!

Academics: There are a wide range of majors/minors and classes to take. There is a liberal arts requirement for those in the College of Arts and Science, but that really helps allow one to explore possible fields outside of the originally intended major as well as obtain a well-rounded background. The most popular majors are Economics/Commerce and Foreign Affairs/Government. Registration for classes can be difficult if you are an underclassman, but it all depends on your randomly selected sign up time. Everyone seems to get their ideal schedules though by the time the add/drop deadline passes due to wait lists. The professors for the most part as extremely approachable, libraries are a great and beautiful option for studying and classes are extremely difficult but worthwhile if you put the necessary time into them.

Campus Food: Good options, but I wish they were open longer.

Diversity: UVA is getting more diverse. Once you get to know the students, you see that it is not the stereotypical preppy southern school that it was at first glance.

Administration: Really depends on your professors/RAs for attendance or underage drinking in the dorms. The honor code holds you to your promise not to lie, cheat or steal. The university police are extremely helpful, they're truly looking out for the students, and don't want to get you into trouble.

Campus Quality: The grounds can't be beat. UVA is a UNESCO world heritage site, and it is constantly under construction in order to preserve the history of the university.

Off-Campus Housing: Many students live off campus after their first year. Even though it's more expensive, both the freedom and the location make it worth it.

Off-Campus Housing: There are many options for off grounds living. The more desirable areas are naturally more expensive, but if you look, you will be able to find a place that suits your needs and budget.

Overall ExperienceWhat's this?

View student contributors

Most students talk about the wonderful experiences and positive feelings they associate with UVA. The University has some of the most devoted alumni in the country. Of course, there are those who wished they had gone somewhere else and those who were turned off by things such as the lack of diversity, the prominence of Greek life, student naïvety, or the pretentiousness that is, in fact, present on campus. Those who really like UVA appreciate its traditions, the friendly and outgoing atmosphere, the beautiful setting, and the outstanding academic environment. Students definitely have their share of rough, sad, or aggravating moments at UVA, but when all is said and done, many claim that they couldn’t imagine being anywhere else.

There are so many different experiences here—putting together an unorganized, student-run play with remarkable self-motivated students, studying abroad, drinking wine and chatting with a favorite professor in his/her home, tutoring at a local school, or sunning out on the lawn with friends—that, in the end, are some of the many reasons why students are happy at UVA. If you come to UVA, be prepared to take the good with the bad. In my view, the positive aspects of the University outweigh the negatives, and the environment is as vibrant and intelligent as it was when Thomas Jefferson founded it well over a century ago.
