Athletics: The football team isn't great but most people still attend the games. The men's basketball team is fantastic and it's very difficult to get tickets and see the games. Both men and women's soccer have strong teams as well as the swim team and the field hockey team. The baseball team were champions last year.

Overall Experience: I've completed my first semester at UVA and loved it! I wouldn't change which school I chose to attend for anything. The classes are challenging but rewarding and I love that you have the choice of what classes to take.

Athletics: I really notice the enthusiasm of not only the students but everyone in the University in terms of physical health. The gym is readily available and welcoming of experienced and inexperienced individuals. We have new and a variety of machines as well! We also offer classes such as yoga, dance, etc.

Overall Experience: My school is very academically challenging. Everyone, from students to professors, inspire me to be the best that I can be. There are so many resources and programs readily available for us, and I really feel their concern and support throughout the year.

Overall Experience: I am surrounded by students that are equally as intelligent as I am. Being at such a prestigious university means constantly being challenged and I am constantly learning.

Overall Experience: UVA is a phenomenal school full of amazing people. I have learned so much already from being here one semester. I truly would not have wanted to go anywhere else.

Overall Experience: I absolutely adore my school. There is not a day that goes by that I don't walk to class, finding new reasons to be grateful for choosing it. The combination of history, academics, athletics, social scene and opportunities is one that cannot be compared.

Overall Experience: The University of Virginia is a fantastic school and I'm thoroughly happy with my choice to go to school here. In the year and a half I've been here, I've learned an immense amount and have had some incredible and exciting opportunities, both in and out of the classroom. I've met some incredible students (and professors!), and I love feeling like I could learn something from every single one of my peers. Everyone here is very involved and knowledgable, and that's an awesome community to be a part of.

Like any school though, UVa is not perfect. Signing up for classes is a nightmare. Don't expect to get into all of the classes you want each semester. Some, not all, of classes are large, lecture style with little interaction. Getting help or one-on-one attention from professors or TAs has to come from the student's own initiative.

Something is ALWAYS under construction, and that makes me wonder if that money could be spent on other things. (there seems to be somewhat of a lack of transparency at this school sometimes)

That being said, I am very happy here and feel like I am being set up to be successful post-graduation. The grounds are gorgeous and the small, college-town feel is relaxed but still offers a wide array of activities and things to do. (Great dining, cool boutiques, and a great outdoors scene).

Overall Experience: My classes are not too difficult but still provide a challenge. It was a little difficult getting used to dorm life and it still is hard sometimes. I have made a good amount of friends and enjoy the club I have joined so far. Hopefully next semester I will have the opportunity to join more clubs. There is so much to do here and I like going out and exploring.

Overall Experience: UVa is the perfect balance. It is a large enough school so you can constantly meet people, but small enough that you're not overwhelmed. The campus is totally walkable and in a beautiful location. It can be academically hard, but college should be somewhat a challenge. This is balanced out by the social aspect of the school. The students study hard but go out and party too. Great experience.

Overall Experience: I transferred to UVA as a second year from a medium-sized university and it was the best academic decision I've ever made. UVA is a great school– professors are engaged and caring, students are incredibly smart and driven, Grounds are beautiful and the social scene is fun and varied. It is the most well-rounded college experience you could possibly have, and if I could do it over again, I absolutely would.

Overall Experience: During my first year at the University, many unfortunate tragedies occurred on grounds, which caused the University to become a microcosm for many of the larger problems and discussions surrounding college campuses and college life. Being here during this time last year was difficult, and our school is not perfect in many ways, which is why I gave a 4 star rating, but what I have found at every turn is peers of mine who are not only smart and driven but also willing to have these difficult discussions and challenge the status quo. UVA does carry the stereotype of preppy, rich, white, out-of-touch with reality kids, which if you're looking for that type of person you will find them, but the overwhelming majority of the students I have interacted with have proven to me otherwise.

Overall Experience: Coming to UVA was not my first choice. In fact, it was my last choice. I was determined not to attend a school that was so big. But summer orientation changed my mind. On move-in day, I was terrified because I did not know anyone or where to go. Now, two weeks later, I can say that I have a wide network of friends from all over Grounds and I know how to get almost anywhere. UVA is the best decision I ever made. I do not regret it one bit.

Overall Experience: The people are so open and friendly. There is so much to be involved in; the alumni network is talented, diverse, and gigantic; there is a clear work-hard-play-hard atmosphere, as well as strong sports programs to follow (in basically everything but football). I am proud to be a part of this historic university. I chose it because of the people I met at Days on the Lawn (UVA's version of accepted students' day).

Overall Experience: Everyone knows how to make small talk, no matter where they are. Even in the bathroom, they're friendly conversation starters.

Overall Experience: UVA has been both very accepting and supportive. Dealing with a recently-diagnosed health issue has put me in a difficult position, but the school has been more than accommodating. Great experience so far.

Overall Experience: UVA had always been my dream school, and once I was admitted, I knew right away that I would be attending. I love the school spirit at football games, and the powerful sense of community at the University. Even though it is a fairly large school, it is easy to find your niche in different activities and clubs, and you meet so many different people that end up being your really good friends. I know that I chose the right school for me because I can never wait to go back to school.

Overall Experience: There are some good parts some bad. Greek life is terrible. I dont like UVA because of the elitest complexes. Once you find your niche, though, things get a lot better.

Overall ExperienceWhat's this?

View student contributors

Most students talk about the wonderful experiences and positive feelings they associate with UVA. The University has some of the most devoted alumni in the country. Of course, there are those who wished they had gone somewhere else and those who were turned off by things such as the lack of diversity, the prominence of Greek life, student naïvety, or the pretentiousness that is, in fact, present on campus. Those who really like UVA appreciate its traditions, the friendly and outgoing atmosphere, the beautiful setting, and the outstanding academic environment. Students definitely have their share of rough, sad, or aggravating moments at UVA, but when all is said and done, many claim that they couldn’t imagine being anywhere else.

There are so many different experiences here—putting together an unorganized, student-run play with remarkable self-motivated students, studying abroad, drinking wine and chatting with a favorite professor in his/her home, tutoring at a local school, or sunning out on the lawn with friends—that, in the end, are some of the many reasons why students are happy at UVA. If you come to UVA, be prepared to take the good with the bad. In my view, the positive aspects of the University outweigh the negatives, and the environment is as vibrant and intelligent as it was when Thomas Jefferson founded it well over a century ago.
