Scholarships: the financial adviser didn't do anything special, except say to complete the FAFSA and look for scholarships. Not much guidance was provided.

Campus Quality: there's a rec center for working out that's really nice and our cafeteria is pretty neat too! inter-murals are a big thing on campus too and the students love it!

4 College Junior

Majors: The application process was fairly easy. Fill it out and write the application essay. For a theatre major however, you had to contact the theatre dept. office and talk with the chair of the dept. and schedule and audition. You may get into the school, but maybe not into the theatre dept. You have to do either a monologue or contrasting monologues(contemporary/classical, comedic/dramatic), they change the rules every now and then. If you are going in for the more technical aspect of theatre, have a portfolio of any work you have completed. For either part, be sure you have a resume (headshot preferred if you auditioning).

Off-Campus Dining: This school is located on a slightly ritzier side of town. About 3 or 4 places are affordable and within walking distance. You have to have a car, bike or ride the bus for some other places a mile or so down the road either direction. Everything else is kind of out of an average student's price range.

3 College Junior

Campus Food: We have the main cafeteria which has a variety of food, though sometimes the pastas are either over or undercooked. The fruit doesn't always look fresh either. Most of the other dining places on campus have a lot of fried stuff. But there is a smoothie place and a Starbucks which offer a few healthier options (yogurt, fruit, cereal, green tea, etc.). The food options are not the best, but I am sure they are a lot better than some other places.

4 College Junior

Diversity: The diversity is pretty great! Though the school itself may not actually celebrate other cultures' holidays/celebrations, there are usually events held on campus to expose others students to the different cultures' food, music, traditions, etc. Going to these activities also is a great means of meeting new people you may otherwise not meet!

Weather: Well, it's south Texas, so it's hot for the first several months. The rain is if-fy. If there is rain, or just humidity, the mosquitos are annoying. But it feels quite nice when it starts to get cooler and there is a nice breeze.

Transportation: On campus there are about four shuttles running which circulate the campus. It's a generally small campus, but the shuttles still seem to be a bit unreliable for getting to class on time. There are bus stops located around the campus which help out a lot if you don't have a vehicle.

Administration: The campus police department can be pretty ridiculous at times. Once my friend received a parking ticket that clearly stated another car model than the one he had. This put a hold on his account and delayed his registration all because of a completely avoidable mistake.

4 College Sophomore

Transportation: Transportation is impressive around Incarnate Word. There are multiple shuttle buses that constantly roam around campus to fins anyone that needs a lift. There do not only have specific stops but also are kind enough to pick you up if you call to their attention on your way to class.

Campus Quality: Incarnate Word is set apart from other schools because of it's social scene and campus life. No one is ever far from a helping hand or a simple smile. There is always something going on at the circle or Marian's Hall. Also, UIW offers incredible studying abroad prgrams. For example, going to Europe for a semester, whether it be France or Italy. With these kind of opportunities my options in life are never limited.

Campus Quality: All the facilities at Incarnate Word University are wonderful. The library is easy to find, offers plenty of reading material and fast working computer access. There is also fast food available on campus, in case the food at Marian's Hall gets a bit repetitive. The student life center is a place where one can go relax, work or hang out and play games; serving as a positive distraction from daily routines. Nature surrounds the whole campus; we have running trails that run through woods and a river bed that gets full when we get enough rain. It's a beautiful school filled with amazing student fundraisers and great football games. One is never left with nothing to do at Incarnate Word University.

College Junior

Majors: The university is very nice and it gives me all the help I need from the special Education department for my apsergers disorder. It even allows me therapy so I don't become to stress when dealing with grades and other problems. The school also offers help with my homework if needed.

Campus Housing: I lived in Hillside my first year. The dorms are not perfect, but they are decent. It's ridiculously expensive for its shape. At least that's what I think. It was a little over $3,000 and gets higher every year.

3 College Freshman

Off-Campus Dining: There is a bill millers across the street. There are some other pretty good restaurants on Broadway street. They require a car though. I don't recommend going leaving when you have class because parking is such a hassle.

3 College Freshman

Off-Campus Housing: If you live off-campus you need to arrive early to school because parking is always full.

4 College Sophomore

Technology: Most students at the University of the Incarnate Word own their own laptops or computers but those who don't have an easy time getting on to computers in the library/computer labs. The wifi is usually pretty fast with the exception of the days students are signing up for classes or housing. The printers are always available to students. There is a good number of them so there is never a wait.

Majors: Becoming a pre-pharmacy major was a piece of cake. All I had to do was tell my advisor that pharmacy was the path I chose, and she placed me in classes that were necessary for that career. Applying to pharmacy school is a completely different story though. I haven't applied yet so I can't give my personal opinion on how difficult it is. From what I've heard though, the process is very nerve-racking and it requires an interview, PCAT scores, hours from shadowing other pharmacists, and more. The only advice I can give is to study hard for the PCAT and be up to date on medical-related current events.

5 College Sophomore

Majors: I have been dreaming about going into the medical field since I was a young girl. Pharmacy seemed like the perfect way to go since I love chemistry and would be able to help people in need. If I could do it all over again, I would still pick the path of becoming a pharmacist. My ultimate goal is to become a pharmacist, but I haven't decided what type or where I would work yet. At the moment, I have no concerns for finding a job since I am attending a great school with an even greater pharmacy program and also since it is a field that will always be needed.

Scholarships: The business department messed up filing my scholarship so I lost a lot of money from FASFA that was much needed. Anytime you go to them they are rude and unwilling to help. It is really frustrating that they said I owed over nine hundred dollars when I had been paid in full for over two months and they would not give me a reason. ONLY when my parents threatened to get a lawyer involved did the Business office decide to realize that we did not owe them money and to write a check to has taken over a month to receive back. Do not ask them for help find help elsewhere and watch your accounts closely all year because otherwise they charge you for things that you do not owe.

2 College Freshman

Technology: The computer personnel do not know much if anything about computers. The internet does not always work and I live on campus so it is frustrating. The printing is a little higher than I would want to pay but it is not too high yet. The internet is often unworking on weekends because of "maintenance" and it is really frustrating.

3 College Freshman

Guys & Girls: Some party too much and get around a lot but most people look put together on a daily basis. Some come to classes but the professors don't take roll so most don't show up for every class. A lot of people party on campus and never get caught be there are some that go to church and are honest in their actions, words, and general demeanor.

3 College Freshman

Weather: Weather here is okay. It's texas weather, what do you expect. It might rain in the morning and clear up and be sunny in the evening. Don't expect to have the same weather here in UIW.

4 College Freshman

Academics: I have just started working on my Accounting major but I like it so far. In the Accounting program students can earn both their bachelor's and master's degree through an integrated master's program. In this program each student will be able to get their master's in one year instead of two. This program also helps Accounting majors get ready for the Certified Public Acccountant exam.

4 College Freshman

Scholarships: The financial aid process was not difficult because we had a lot of questions and the financial aid office and business office were able to answer them for me.

Overall ExperienceWhat's this?

View student contributors

The University of the Incarnate Word has so much to offer. From the academics and excellent professors to the life-long friendships, you will not look back and regret coming to UIW. Most of the students really enjoy their experience at UIW. The friendships formed here usually last through college and beyond. There are also more genuine friendships since UIW is a small school, and keeping in contact with fellow classmates is very easy because you see the same people almost daily. UIW is a very diverse school, so it is like a "small world." The memories formed at UIW are endless.

The education is top-of-the-line, as it thoroughly prepares each student to excel in his or her desired field of study. The smaller atmosphere allows for more personal attention for each student. The relationships between students and teachers is very strong, and professors know students by their names because of the low student-to-teacher ratio. Sure, you will hear complaints here and there, whether it be about residence life or the cafeteria food, but keep in mind that everyone has different tastes, and nothing is perfect. Overall, students are very satisfied with their education at UIW and all that it brings them not only while they are in school but after they graduate as well. Professors and advisers make sure that their students are more than prepared for their careers and for whatever life may bring in the future.
