Athletics: USC is the home of some of the best college football in the nation. Games are unforgettable. The 80,000 person stadium always sells out but students can usually get a ticket. During big games like Clemson the crowd is so crazy that it almost feels like the stadium is shaking. The tailgates are a ton of fun and start hours before the game. Southern charm is apparent when the boys wear polos and kakis to game and the girls wear cowgirl boots and black dresses. Other sports like baseball, basketball, and soccer are well attended too but nothing compares to football season.

Greek Life: If you want to go greek southern schools like USC are the way to go. A large amount of people are greek but it's not a big deal if you aren't. Sororities and frats both have mixers and functions which are a ton of fun but you can be invited as a date even if you aren't greek. Fraternities have some house parties but since its a huge bar school it won't hurt your social life if you aren't greek. The frats are known for having awesome tailgates though which all girls can go to but are limited to only the guys in the hosting fraternities.

Transportation: Most people only travel home for fall break, Thanksgiving break, winter break, and spring break. You can fly out of Columbia airport which is very close or Charlotte which is 1 1/2 hours away but much cheaper (you can get a $40-50 shuttle there). Depending how close you live to campus though it's super easy to find someone to drive with or drive by yourself.

Administration: Unless you are trying to get into trouble or uncontrollably drunk downtown you will probably not run into any problems.

Weather: Coming from the north, I think that the weather is awesome. Snow is rare and if there is even one snowflake they will call it a snow day. There are only two seasons in SC: summer and winter. The summers are blazing hot but carry on into November making walking to class and attending classes pleasant.. no one wants to walk through snow to class or get food. Winter is usually 35-65 degrees depending on the day.

Health & Safety: Campus is safe and there are many emergency phones, lit pathways, escort services, and student transportation. There's always a lot of people on campus no matter what time of the day or day of the week and everyone looks out for each other.

Local Area: Columbia is one of the biggest 'cities' in SC, although if you are from the north you will laugh at the fact that it is even considered a city. With that being said it has all the benefits of living in a city: beautiful buildings, great shopping, bars, and restaurants. It also has a college town feel and everywhere you go you will see gamecock posters and bumper stickers. You can walk almost anywhere but cabs or USC buses will also come in handy. Also as long as you are smart and stay in the safe parts of the city (where campus and the bars/restaurants/shopping are anyways), Columbia is very safe.

Overall Experience: USC is without a doubt the best school in America. Cocky for a reason.

Off-Campus Housing: If you're going to live off campus live in either Olympia or the newly built Hub. Olympia is a renovated warehouse by Greek Village that is very modern, sleek, and open. The Hub is a luxury complex on Main Street that is targeted towards USC students which includes a rooftop pool, free tanning, ect.

Athletics: Athletics, especially football, are a very large part of campus and the community.

4 College Freshman

Technology: Technology and computers are a large part of schoolwork. Many classes have an online portion of grades and work.

Party Scene: Nightlife is always a big part of a lot of students lives. Taxis, DDs, and shuttles are the most common ways of transportation.

Drug Safety: Drugs are not seen or almost never heard about. Drinking is more common.

Transportation: Many shuttles are offered on and off campus. Taxis also drive around the city.

Scholarships: The Financial Aid Office was not as helpful as we had hoped. I had to look elsewhere.

Overall Experience: I really love my school! All students are very involved in many activities. The community on campus and very lively and acceptable of anyone. The professors are amazing and really understand what the students are going through. The campus itself is gorgeous.

Campus Housing: There are a range of different type of residence halls on campus. Cost depends on which type you choose.

Diversity: People from all over the country and all over the world attend and are accepted at my University.

Local Area: Downtown is great, but that's really all there is to do. There isn't much outside of restaurants, bars, and shopping.

5 College Freshman

Overall Experience: We have some of the greatest school spirit in the country. Everyone goes crazy for the football games and you can really feel unity with everyone at the school. I even feel a special bond with people I see in my hometown with gamecocks on their car windows.

Overall ExperienceWhat's this?

If there is one word to describe the experiences you will have at USC, it would have to be "unforgettable." Being away from home for the first time at USC is both exciting and scary at times, but the freedom you get when you come here feels natural. It makes you wonder why they don’t send people to college sooner! Academically, there are courses and professors who can make you look at things in ways you never considered before. Facts and figures will be thrown at you, but some of the professors (and your peers) can teach you a lot about life as well. It’s also a very cool thing to see laid-back professors who will sometimes move their classes out onto the Horseshoe lawn.

On top of this, with such a large student population, you will inevitably form new relationships that will last a lifetime. As at any college, the quality of the experience depends on what you put into it. There are thousands of new people to meet, tons of activities going on, and things to learn both in and out of class. Those who don’t take advantage of these opportunities will not get a lot out of their experience here. Some students get tired of being at USC after a while, and some hate it from the start for whatever reason. USC is not the place for everyone, but overall, students seem to be thoroughly enamored with Carolina and wouldn’t trade their title of Gamecocks for anything in the world. There seems to be an aura of its own inherent to the University, and its welcoming vibe is infectious.
