2 College Sophomore

Greek Life: It is a cult of students who believe they are benefitting their community and future, but are actually just making themselves appear very unprofessional for their future!

Off-Campus Dining: It is mostly just fast food restaurants. Where I am from, many restaurants are localized and owned by town residents, not corporations, which is unfortunate.

Party Scene: The downtown area, Five Points, is really popular, but a little unsafe. The Vista is also a nice place to go, with newer buildings and a safer scene.

3 College Sophomore

Local Area: The city itself isn't very beautiful, and the few things that are beautiful, are on campus. There is not much to do besides go out to Five Points or the Vista on any given night.

4 College Sophomore

Majors: I did not have any abnormal issues getting into my major, it was actually just a form and I was accepted.

4 College Sophomore

Majors: The teachers are from a wide variety, and are very interesting. I love my major, but I wish Columbia was more equipped for anthropological studies.

3 College Sophomore

Technology: Things may be broken for weeks at a time without someone repairing them.

5 College Sophomore

Athletics: Love the school spirit here!

3 College Sophomore

Weather: Varies greatly from week to week, or even day by day.

3 College Junior

Health & Safety: Have recieved a few crime notices, but nothing serious. Construction on campus makes it creepy when alone at night in some areas. Very rarely see campus police officers.

3 College Junior

Technology: Plenty of computer labs and work stations available. Printing is expensive but convenient, with small stations around campus. Internet connection is generally good, although sometimes it can be slow or go out.

3 College Junior

Scholarships: Did not receive any assistance aside from loans. No guidance on how to receive any awards from the school at all.

4 College Junior

Athletics: The on campus workout center is awesome. Just about anything you could want, easily accessible, good hours, and plenty of room.

4 College Junior

Academics: Most of the professors I have had in the college of social work are awesome. Very knowledgeable and dedicated to the field. Very willing to work with students and help them succeed.

3 College Junior

Majors: My interests were not taken into consideration for my placement at my first practicum, however it ended up being an okay experience. 2nd year in MSW you get to choose your own placement.

3 College Junior

Majors: If I could do it over I would wait until 2014 to enroll because the new curriculum changes give you much more freedom to create a degree path that fits your interests.

3 College Junior

Greek Life: Nice Greek houses. Not sure their impact on the community. Frequently present of campus for events

Overall ExperienceWhat's this?

View student contributors

If there is one word to describe the experiences you will have at USC, it would have to be "unforgettable." Being away from home for the first time at USC is both exciting and scary at times, but the freedom you get when you come here feels natural. It makes you wonder why they don’t send people to college sooner! Academically, there are courses and professors who can make you look at things in ways you never considered before. Facts and figures will be thrown at you, but some of the professors (and your peers) can teach you a lot about life as well. It’s also a very cool thing to see laid-back professors who will sometimes move their classes out onto the Horseshoe lawn.

On top of this, with such a large student population, you will inevitably form new relationships that will last a lifetime. As at any college, the quality of the experience depends on what you put into it. There are thousands of new people to meet, tons of activities going on, and things to learn both in and out of class. Those who don’t take advantage of these opportunities will not get a lot out of their experience here. Some students get tired of being at USC after a while, and some hate it from the start for whatever reason. USC is not the place for everyone, but overall, students seem to be thoroughly enamored with Carolina and wouldn’t trade their title of Gamecocks for anything in the world. There seems to be an aura of its own inherent to the University, and its welcoming vibe is infectious.
