Health & Safety: The pathways are not very well lit at night except in certain areas on campus so it is pretty difficult to feel safe when walking in the evening. I have always been taught to not walk by myself but sometimes I find it necessary to. Security is good at patrolling the perimeter of campus, but it would make me feel safer if there was some sort of security patrolling the walkways.

Diversity: I feel very safe stating my views and opinions at USC. Because the university as a whole strives to reduce bigotry, it is easy to state your opinion. Of course that does not necessarily mean everyone will agree or be accepting, but for the most part people enjoy the discussion that comes out of opposing views. There are student organizations for almost every diversifying factor out there and I really appreciate that.

Off-Campus Housing: Off-campus housing in Columbia is easy to find if you put effort forth into looking for it. While it is slightly expensive, it could be a lot worse. Parking is not good. Public transportation is very limited as well. Overall safety is pretty average as long as you are not doing things that would cause you to get hurt.

Campus Housing: I didn't really like living in a dorm. My roommate was great, but my suitemates weren't friendly at all. My dorm wasn't the friendliest either. I had some friends who lived in different dorm and I enjoyed visiting them. It seemed like everyone on their hall was friends.

Greek Life: I wouldn't say the Greek houses are opulent, but they aren't run down. They are very nice. Greek life is fun. USC is such a big campus that going Greek shrinks the campus a bit. Once you join a fraternity or sorority you tend to only do the activites the Greek community is doing, so you don't really mingle with non- Greeks that much.

Technology: The wireless is sometimes sketchy. It all depends on how many people are on. Like during exams the internet is really slow.

Weather: It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. I think there are about 2 days of spring and 2 days of fall.

Off-Campus Dining: It's fine. I can usually find something to eat nearby. There is a variety of restaurants at different price points, so it's easy to find a place to go.

Administration: It's okay. If you have a beer and look underage, the police will question you. You just have to throw it away and they will let you go.

Local Area: Columbia is an awesome city with a great southern charm. USC is close to lots of different parts of the South, such as Myrtle Beach, Charlotte, and even Florida

Weather: It's hot and humid in the sumer and cold and snowy in the winter, but we get snow all year round and nothing is better than that

Athletics: There's nothing like football in the South

3 College Freshman

Scholarships: I could still use more money, but they did give me some aid

3 College Freshman

Administration: I havent gotten into any trouble so I don't really know what the strictness is like. But there are a lot of issues with parking on campus

4 College Freshman

Majors: The student success center is great with helping find internships, plus employers really respect the school and program i'm in, and seem to be impressed in interviews

5 College Freshman

Majors: I am in the best International Business Program in the county, and I couldn't be happier

3 College Freshman

Off-Campus Dining: It's pretty much your typical chains and fast food options, but it does taste good and most of the options are within walking distance

3 College Freshman

Campus Housing: I live in one of the on campus apartments, and it's very nice to have my own room and kitchen. However, I don't get to spend a lot of time getting to know my floor or the rest of my dorm, and I feel like I'm missing out on that aspect

Transportation: Living on campus, you can walk everywhere that's necessary. But once you move off campus you need some sort of reliable transportation

4 College Freshman

Party Scene: I love the tailgates and gamedays, it's unlike anything any other school has

3 College Freshman

Drug Safety: There is a lot of alcohol usage on campus, but I don't see too much dangerous drug use around

3 College Junior

Scholarships: The financial aid process has been trying. It is important that you keep up with your information incase any discrepancies come up.

Overall ExperienceWhat's this?

If there is one word to describe the experiences you will have at USC, it would have to be "unforgettable." Being away from home for the first time at USC is both exciting and scary at times, but the freedom you get when you come here feels natural. It makes you wonder why they don’t send people to college sooner! Academically, there are courses and professors who can make you look at things in ways you never considered before. Facts and figures will be thrown at you, but some of the professors (and your peers) can teach you a lot about life as well. It’s also a very cool thing to see laid-back professors who will sometimes move their classes out onto the Horseshoe lawn.

On top of this, with such a large student population, you will inevitably form new relationships that will last a lifetime. As at any college, the quality of the experience depends on what you put into it. There are thousands of new people to meet, tons of activities going on, and things to learn both in and out of class. Those who don’t take advantage of these opportunities will not get a lot out of their experience here. Some students get tired of being at USC after a while, and some hate it from the start for whatever reason. USC is not the place for everyone, but overall, students seem to be thoroughly enamored with Carolina and wouldn’t trade their title of Gamecocks for anything in the world. There seems to be an aura of its own inherent to the University, and its welcoming vibe is infectious.
