Party Scene: I am an online student, so I have no idea what the party scene is like.

3 College Junior

Scholarships: Online scholarship opportunities are available.

3 College Junior

Majors: My practicum in Speech Language Pathology was hard work, but I learned a lot.

3 College Junior

Majors: Making sure I had the correct pre-reqs was the most difficult part.

4 College Junior

Local Area: I like the farmer's markets on weekends. There are some great restaurants on Main Street, too.

3 College Junior

Health & Safety: I am an online student, so I do not have to worry about campus security.

Off-Campus Dining: There are a lot of restaurants that are great in the city, not terribly expensive and pretty good food. you need a car to get there or pay 10-15 for a cab. not a lot of ethnic food but you can still find some quality stuff. Insomnia cookies will deliver until like 2:30 am is geared towards college students. they will deliver warm cookies and ice cream to your room or apartment whenever you want, that is WONDERFUL and a lot of places stay open late and will deliver late, a lot in 5 points (grilled teriyaki and fast eddies and pita pit) stay open late so you can grab drunk food which is great

Local Area: I'm from up north and I'm not a huge fan of the south. I was horrified by the racism that's still ALIVE AND WELL PEOPLE when I got here. Very disappointing. There's a lot to do in five points and the state fair is cool and saint pats in 5 points is awesome but other than that there aren't any concerts or anything that happens often. Not a very lively city, kind of a dump. you couldnt pay me enough money to live in the south after i graduate, i thought i would like the slower pace and friendly southerners but almost all of them hate northerners or outsiders from the get go and are very closed minded

Health & Safety: You barely ever see campus security, if your dorm needs a swipe to get in you feel safe, i never really felt like i had to lock my door during my freshman year but living off campus its not safe you always have to have the door locked, even if youre the only one home. its hard to find ways to get home late at night from the library for example. they have carolina van shuttles but you never know when they show up and you dont want to sit out side and wait a half hour for them. they dont have people that walk you back to your dorm which would be nice. usually the cops will just show up rather than campus security taking care of things which is a pain because the columbia police department has its priorities all backwards and think its more important to give college students drinking tickets rather than busting gang crime. very disappointing

4 College Sophomore

Athletics: Varsity sports (aka football) are really fun to attend but you can't really ever play the sport you want. all of the sports facilities are taken up by higher ranking sports and intramural isnt that popular. even club sports are hard to get onto because there are so many people here. a bummer if you love to play a sport that you cant here

4 College Sophomore

Party Scene: Bars are great and tailgates are nuts (and hot) but they get old after a while. a lot of kids party a little excessively so unless you're okay with being out til 3am several nights a week getting blackout, this school might be too much for you. definitely a school always down to party and there's always something to do at the bars. GET A FAKE ID it doesn't have to be perfect, just with your face on it and more than a piece of cardboard. youll need one for the first two years, its not hard to get into bars with a fake, Columbia is the fake id capital of the world

Greek Life: I think the sorority girls are horrible to be around and are stuck up and full of themselves. none of them are in it for the charity or the great stuff they do, just to be in a sorority and find friends. they are so expensive and it gets to their heads. Greek life does not actually get u connections in the job world more than any other legit organization so they are pretty lame. Frat parties are lame guys who think they are hotter than Zeus and the girls think everything should be handed to them on a silver platter. Obviously not all of them, but its petty and lame and a system based strictly on judging whether or not the rushes are good enough to be in your sorority based on physical appearance and a 20 second conversation. there are a few that are down to earth (AXO and XO) but ive only really experienced obnoxious girls from the rest, ESPECIALLY the top tier ones.

Administration: The administration at this school is run by monkeys. They have no regard for what the current students need. Campus dining is an absolute nightmare and NEEDS to be reformed but they don't care. Getting into dorms is a pain too to sign people in all the time to some of them, a guard at the door is great and they are helpful when forgetting carolina cards or with drunk kids, they usually dont call the cops unless they think they need to intervene. a lot of dorms dont allow overnight visitors that are of the opposite sex. get over it its the 21st century. some buildings do allow it though from the start which makes zero sense. all they are concerned with is how the school looks to incoming students. campus security is a joke, I never saw them my freshman year but i heard they would sometimes walk around super late at night. with how dangerous this city is though you would think that they would be more helpful. i swear they only have like 10 guards on at night. just this year after a bunch of armed robberies did they add more campus security. the administration is just straight up clueless, they should study other schools that have better ratings than them and reform stuff

Off-Campus Housing: They pretty much kick you off campus after your freshman year and all the housing options for apartments are not close AT ALL. They all tend to rip you off but the places are pretty nice, you can almost always get a pool and your own bathroom for 500-600 a month, and most are individual leases. If you don't have a car living off campus you are pretty much stranded there all the time, the shuttles run during the day to campus but if you have classes that end later than the shuttle then you're screwed. I would rather live in the not so great campus housing and be close to everything than be in sketchy areas where the off-campus housing is. you can rent houses but they are old and gross from years of wear by college students. those are nice because they are semi close to campus and five points but more expensive and more of a pain in terms of rent

3 College Sophomore

Majors: haven't really heard anything great about our internship help. they have meetings for it all the time but theyre not well advertised or attended, the job fairs suck and have zero legitimate opportunities

3 College Sophomore

Majors: The business school is brand new so its pretty cool, but its not even done yet. They said they would have it done for fall 2014 but of course they don't. there is sawing and other construction going on all the time. The whiteboards are stickers on the wall which people think is cool but its not because they are a nightmare to erase and if you overshoot the whiteboard and wipe onto the wall you get dry erase stains on the wall.. so thats clearly not well thought out. The business professors are cool, the classes arent that bad. they talk up the business school a lot but its really only their international business major that's really that great, and you have to haven near perfect grades to get in

4 College Freshman

Off-Campus Dining: There a lots of options near campus including moes, frozen yogurt places, pizza, and local mom and pop shops which are amazing. Some don't accept student bonus bucks or give discounts which is unfortunate.

3 College Freshman

Health & Safety: We have our own police force that is an entity separate from the local police but it is still effective. There have been a few incidents this year and they have responded well. Many classes for personal security and personal self-defense are offered.

4 College Sophomore

Majors: A biology pre-med major is notoriously difficult but be passionate and work hard.

4 College Sophomore

Campus Housing: The dorms are alright as far as I've seen. The social atmosphere is usually good.

Athletics: Obviously the Gamecocks are obsessed with their athletics.

Local Area: Everyone is pretty supportive to the gamecocks. There are some activities but I'm not the best person to ask.

4 College Sophomore

Health & Safety: Campus seems pretty safe. Five Points is not safe and is very near campus. I'm surprised how safe it seems given that fact, so the security officials must be doing at least a good job.

4 College Senior

Off-Campus Dining: There are so many different places to eat in Columbia. Food off-campus should never be an issue that's for sure.

2 College Senior

Local Area: I mean, the prettiest thing in Columbia is the University. It's not safe, so much gang crime. There are no professional sports, it revolves around college sports. Cost of living is cheap because salaries are bare to none. Nightlife is based for college students, not graduates or older crowds. Just no.

Overall ExperienceWhat's this?

View student contributors

If there is one word to describe the experiences you will have at USC, it would have to be "unforgettable." Being away from home for the first time at USC is both exciting and scary at times, but the freedom you get when you come here feels natural. It makes you wonder why they don’t send people to college sooner! Academically, there are courses and professors who can make you look at things in ways you never considered before. Facts and figures will be thrown at you, but some of the professors (and your peers) can teach you a lot about life as well. It’s also a very cool thing to see laid-back professors who will sometimes move their classes out onto the Horseshoe lawn.

On top of this, with such a large student population, you will inevitably form new relationships that will last a lifetime. As at any college, the quality of the experience depends on what you put into it. There are thousands of new people to meet, tons of activities going on, and things to learn both in and out of class. Those who don’t take advantage of these opportunities will not get a lot out of their experience here. Some students get tired of being at USC after a while, and some hate it from the start for whatever reason. USC is not the place for everyone, but overall, students seem to be thoroughly enamored with Carolina and wouldn’t trade their title of Gamecocks for anything in the world. There seems to be an aura of its own inherent to the University, and its welcoming vibe is infectious.
