Campus Housing: Living on campus as a freshmen was great! It was a great way to meet friends. I lived in the "business community," meaning that all residents on my floor were business majors. Due to this, we all took similar courses and were able to study with one another which made classes a breeze. The dorm building was average, i enjoyed the suite style rather than traditional. We had our own bathroom shared by 4 girls instead of 50 so that was a plus. The worst option i would have to say is Bates or Bates West. I have not heard great things about those dorms and I am so glad that I was placed in Columbia Hall last year.

Greek Life: I am not in greek life myself but they aren't all that bad. I only didn't join because I could not afford the dues. It is very expensive to go greek.

Off-Campus Housing: Living off campus is way better than living on campus. You don't have RMs (RAs) to deal with but you're still close to campus. Campus police and local police control notorious off-campus living facilities but they are there to keep students safe just like they do on campus. It's cheaper to live off campus than on campus if you find the right places. In Columbia, you can find anything from luxury condos to crappy, cheap crash pads.

Off-Campus Dining: Columbia has some of the best night-life in the state of South Carolina. There is also something going on and always a new place to go out to eat. A lot of places do student discounts and general discount days that would be applicable for everyone not just students.

Administration: We have one of the best presidents ever in Harris Pastides! He is a great advocate for a well rounded student experience. Attendance policies and strictness vary but what college you are in and by the tenure status of your professor.

Scholarships: The university only gave me $2000 for my entire 4 years. They are stingy with giving out money. South Carolina Lottery scholarships are where most of my financial aid comes from.

Party Scene: Carolina always has great parties to go to! You don't always have to go to a frat party. All you need is a group of friends, a spot off campus, and a bottle of fireball!

Campus Food: There is pretty good variety of types of foods but the menus at each restaurant are limited. The food itself is normally pretty good though!

Campus Housing: I really enjoyed my time in campus housing. It was a great way to meet people freshman year. After freshman year most people move off campus.

3 College Freshman

Off-Campus Housing: A lot of people seem to like the apartments but you have to book early or else you wont be able to get one

4 College Freshman

Off-Campus Dining: So many great places to eat off campus and they are all well priced and taste great

3 College Freshman

Administration: I dont know much about them but they seem to do an okay job from what I hear

4 College Freshman

Scholarships: I had to make a few phone calls to make sure I got the money I won

4 College Freshman

Party Scene: Everyone is there for a great time. Rarely any fights

3 College Freshman

Campus Food: Varies from place to place

3 College Freshman

Campus Housing: Wifi is unreliable, they clean the bathrooms daily

4 College Sophomore

Off-Campus Housing: Houses are the best option.

3 College Sophomore

Off-Campus Dining: Too much fast food. Not enough healthy.

3 College Sophomore

Administration: Staff looks the other way if your not being stupid

3 College Sophomore

Scholarships: Talk to a financial aid advisor, not the desk.

3 College Sophomore

Campus Food: regular meal plan is a rip off

4 College Sophomore

Campus Housing: Convenience is the best part, but being forced to be on the meal plan is the worst.

4 College Freshman

Off-Campus Housing: Plenty of off campus housing selections to chose from. Mostly newer residences built within the last 5 years with above average amenities for slightly more than what the dorms cost.

4 College Freshman

Off-Campus Dining: Plenty of quality restaurants and fast food options. Reasonably priced with large portions. Great bang for the buck

3 College Freshman

Administration: The school does its best to allow us to blow off steam without getting chaotic

Overall ExperienceWhat's this?

View student contributors

If there is one word to describe the experiences you will have at USC, it would have to be "unforgettable." Being away from home for the first time at USC is both exciting and scary at times, but the freedom you get when you come here feels natural. It makes you wonder why they don’t send people to college sooner! Academically, there are courses and professors who can make you look at things in ways you never considered before. Facts and figures will be thrown at you, but some of the professors (and your peers) can teach you a lot about life as well. It’s also a very cool thing to see laid-back professors who will sometimes move their classes out onto the Horseshoe lawn.

On top of this, with such a large student population, you will inevitably form new relationships that will last a lifetime. As at any college, the quality of the experience depends on what you put into it. There are thousands of new people to meet, tons of activities going on, and things to learn both in and out of class. Those who don’t take advantage of these opportunities will not get a lot out of their experience here. Some students get tired of being at USC after a while, and some hate it from the start for whatever reason. USC is not the place for everyone, but overall, students seem to be thoroughly enamored with Carolina and wouldn’t trade their title of Gamecocks for anything in the world. There seems to be an aura of its own inherent to the University, and its welcoming vibe is infectious.
