Campus Housing: There is a great social atmosphere around the University of South Carolina campus.

4 College Junior

Campus Food: Meal plans are overpriced, but very convenient.

4 College Junior

Campus Housing: Depending on where you reside, your living experience can be amazing. Columbia Hall is where I stayed and I had the best time of my life! Even though it was far from my engineering classes I was able to take the bus to make it to class on time.

5 College Junior

Athletics: The sporting activities and the fitness centers are great

4 College Junior

Off-Campus Housing: Woodlands and Aspyre are amazing places to stay.

5 College Sophomore

Off-Campus Housing: Pretty much everyone lives off-campus after freshman year. There are a ton of rediculously nice places for pretty cheap. Popular: Olympia, Granby, The Mills, The Hub, Greene Crossing, The Lofts

5 College Sophomore

Party Scene: Downtown is fun every night of the week except Sunday I guess, but I'm sure if you really tried you could probably find something fun to do then too.

5 College Freshman

Off-Campus Housing: I will be living off-campus when I go back in the fall, because it is way cheaper. I don't have to have a meal plan, so I can cook for myself. Off-campus has so much more room and privacy. It has a kitchen so you don't have to worry about food.

4 College Freshman

Party Scene: I didn't really do much partying while I was at school. I would prefer to not get into trouble. From what other people said, a lot of people go to 5 points to party.

4 College Freshman

Off-Campus Dining: Most places to eat off-campus had decent prices. The food was very good. I prefered to eat off-campus. After a while it got expensive to eat out all of the time. We could walk to a lot of places to eat, or places would deliver. There were a lot of places to eat out around campus.

4 College Freshman

Administration: I think the school was strict. I lived in an all girl dorm and the first semester guys could stay until 2 a.m. Guys could not spend the night even on weekends. Anyone who came over, we had to check them in and they had to leave their ids at the desk. At night there were security guards who came in. After 10 p.m. we had to use our carolina card to get into the building.

5 College Freshman

Scholarships: I had no problem at all with getting financial aid. I found out what I needed to do and I got it done. It didn't take much time at all. Everyone I talked to over phone were nice and willingly to help or talk me through anything.

3 College Freshman

Campus Food: Russell had a lot of options. However, the food could have been better. We had a lot of options to choose from but the food was blah. The workers were rude. One time I saw a girl yelling at another worker. All of the bottom floor of Russell were watching what was happening. It would have been nice to use a meal swipe whenever not just during a certain time. I sometimes would go out to eat and just get some chips or drinks to keep in my room.

4 College Freshman

Campus Housing: Living on campus was awesome! I could wake up 25 minutes before class started and still make it to class on time. I picked a dorm that was in the center of campus which was the best. There were so many things I could walk to on campus from my dorm because I was right there. I could walk to go get food from the cafe. I could even walk to the stadium, it was a little bit more of a walk, but it wasn't that bad. Being on campus I might more people and when it was time to get a study group together, some of the people were already in my dorm, so it was easy to get together and study.

College Junior

Off-Campus Housing: The school, of course, wants more students to live in campus to get more money. But I've heard that off-campus is better for living.

College Junior

Party Scene: I have no experience with the party scene. I'm not at school for all that.

3 College Junior

Off-Campus Dining: Just the usual stuff. You can find more options though than on-campus dining. So that's nice.

3 College Junior

Administration: I haven't had an issue that has had to involve campus police. I have heard about rule violations, however.

2 College Junior

Scholarships: It's pretty awful. Financial aid office has been no help whatsoever. Options are also limited when it comes to receiving financial aid. Tuition fees are high, so it's not good.

Campus Food: A lot of the options are not healthy and if they are, they're expensive. It's better to eat off-campus. Cheaper and the food is better.

Overall ExperienceWhat's this?

View student contributors

If there is one word to describe the experiences you will have at USC, it would have to be "unforgettable." Being away from home for the first time at USC is both exciting and scary at times, but the freedom you get when you come here feels natural. It makes you wonder why they don’t send people to college sooner! Academically, there are courses and professors who can make you look at things in ways you never considered before. Facts and figures will be thrown at you, but some of the professors (and your peers) can teach you a lot about life as well. It’s also a very cool thing to see laid-back professors who will sometimes move their classes out onto the Horseshoe lawn.

On top of this, with such a large student population, you will inevitably form new relationships that will last a lifetime. As at any college, the quality of the experience depends on what you put into it. There are thousands of new people to meet, tons of activities going on, and things to learn both in and out of class. Those who don’t take advantage of these opportunities will not get a lot out of their experience here. Some students get tired of being at USC after a while, and some hate it from the start for whatever reason. USC is not the place for everyone, but overall, students seem to be thoroughly enamored with Carolina and wouldn’t trade their title of Gamecocks for anything in the world. There seems to be an aura of its own inherent to the University, and its welcoming vibe is infectious.
