Greek Life: There Are Greeks Present – Greek life is present at Pitt and you can see them raising money for various charities on campus and hosting different events. However, Pitt isn't centered around Greek life nor is the social scene dominated by Greek life because Pitt is such a big campus.

Campus Quality: Academic & Social Inside Scoop – Because Pitt is so big, you don't get a whole lot of groundbreaking news or gossip socially...just rumors. But academically, you need to establish relationships with your professors if you want a foot in the door for research opportunities, letters of reccommendation, etc. Nothing is handed to you; you have to go seek out people to help you, and Pitt offers lots of people willing to help you.

Technology: Pitt's has a ton of computer labs. They are clearly pointed out on campus maps. These labs are staffed with people to help you if something isn't working. In each computer lab, there are self-service printers where you print from a computer in the lab, swipe your student ID and it'll come out of the printer. They even have a lab open 24 hours, 7 days a week in David Lawrence Hall.

Majors: Completely Satisfied – The Engineering school here at Pitt does a phenomenal job of setting you up for success. They intertwine a co-op program with classes, allowing you to make a decent amount of money without paying the cost of tuition concurrently. It makes college more affordable! The professors in our program are also well versed and well known, so having connections post-graduation are well established and make getting a hefty paying job a breeze!

Diversity: It's All Here! Pretty much any political belief, economic background, religion, and sexual orientation can be found on this very urban campus. Students often mingle with some of the more "popular" homeless men found on the streets of Oakland (for example, Shuffles, the famous shoeless homeless man who is always wrapped in a blanket even in 100 degree weather and will NOT take handouts from anyone) No one here really cares about your personal preferences, as long as it doesnt interfere with what you're doing.

Campus Food: You'll Never Spend All Your Panther Funds on Food – Buying even the cheapest plan often results in left over money at the end of the semester - which your friends will love but parents will hate. There are eatieries housed within campus buildings, but select off campus business except the funds too so you can have more options. Market is the best place to grab food and meet with friends, and is central to most campus buildings. There is lots of value in the menu, thus the left over money at the end of the semester. Taco Bell Express is my favorite!

Administration: In Light of Recent Bomb Threats – Recently, Pitt has recieved about 143 bomb threats from an annonymous group. They handled the situation rather well, but in the context of "strictness" it was quite a shock . Students couldn't take backpack or bags to classrooms, were required to stand in long lines, and had to show a valid ID to get into buildings. Campus dormitories were on lock down with no outside visitors permitted, and email accounts were diligently monitored. Although these extreme measures of safety have dissipated since the threats have ceased, its likely that Pitt will implement a more a policy that is more strict than in the past for entry into buildings and filtering email messages. In terms of underage drinking, its generally not much of an issue unless you're causing a disruption of some sort.

Majors: Very Easy – All you have to do is fill out the forms at the school that houses your program and make sure you've filled the entrance requirements, and you're good to go. You don't even really need to fill the entrance requirements, since you can just ask the department to declare a major instead. Also, if you enter an intended major on your application, and it's done automatically. You can even chose your adviser as soon as you've been declared.

Scholarships: Good, but Not Excellent – The process changes from time to time with little warning. The deadlines tend to pass without notice, and sometimes my payments get lost. The aid I got also changed from one year to the other without explanation. Still, I generally got what I needed.

Off-Campus Housing: It does seem that there is not as much off-campus living as needed. That is due to the fact that the University is in the city, which I understand. Students just have to look hard for an apartment or get on a waiting list for a University owned apartment building. Overall, off-campus housing isn't too expensive, but you can find some housing that is a little too much. Parking is another factor that is effected because of the University's location. It would be nice to have more parking, but I don't even know where that could be available.

Health & Safety: University Safety – Overall, I believe that the University of Pittsburgh security staff keeps the campus safe. The only reason I feel unsafe at times is because we are in Pittsburgh, which can be an unsafe city. Also, there are many people who are not student that are on campus. I think the most important thing for students is to just be aware of their surroundings and they should be okay.

Parking: City Situation – Like any city, parking is difficult and expensive. Don't bring a car.

3 College Sophomore

Drug Safety: Alcohol Is Prominent, Drugs Are Not – Pretty much everyone drinks socially. Drugs are not very prominent, though once in a while they are seen.

4 College Sophomore

Health & Safety: The campus police and security are dedicated and trustworthy. They work very hard especially under unusual circumstances.

5 College Freshman

Local Area: Area Attractions – The campus is located right in the middle of the city. Thus, us college students always have food to eat, movies to watch, and stores to shop at.

3 College Sophomore

Overall Experience: Big School With Character – It's a large school, but the college is only as large as you make it. With many opportunities to form small groups to study and upper level classes tend to be smaller, it is overall a good experience. I love the buildings, especially the Cathedral of Learning and its nationality rooms, modern conveniences with neo-gothic architecture.

4 College Sophomore

Transportation: Public transportation is free for Pitt students with their student ID, and it includes Pitt and CMU shuttles.

3 College Freshman

Greek Life: If being involved in a sorority or fraternity is of interest to a student, there are many Greek organizations to choose from. They seem to have many activities, but is not the only way to enjoy friendships and social experiences here at Pitt.

4 College Freshman

Party Scene: There are many nighttime activities for Pitt students. Besides many parties, there are activities sponsored by the dorms and clubs. There are also club sports, intramural sports and physical fitness activities in the weight rooms throughout campus. The city of Pittsburgh offers many activities like plays, sporting events, concerts art and music reviews.

Guys & Girls: Most of the students I see on the Pitt campus are smiling and having fun, always friendly and helpful. The ones in my classes work very hard and are very conscientious students.

5 College Sophomore

Academics: I Love My Major – the professors are nice, helpful, and I'm very satisfied

Weather: i mean, its pittsburgh. the weather is as moody here as a 9mo pregnant with twins mom to be. you can see 3 seasons in one day sometimes. but when its nice, its really nice.

2 College Sophomore

Parking: ugh. parking in oakland is a nightmare. it is almost impossible to find a street spot, the garages can get expensive, and parking permits through the school are way too expensive. take the bus when possible.

5 College Sophomore

Campus Quality: The facilities are great. there are plenty of options here on campus as far as gyms, restaurants, and quiet places to study.

5 College Sophomore

Overall Experience: Pitt is an amazing school and the city of Pittsburgh has a lot to offer from top of the line internships to entertainment for all tastes.

Overall, students agree that they wouldn't trade their Pitt experience for anything. As with most decisions, there are a lot of things to consider. If you don't like living in a city environment, Pittsburgh may not be the place for you. While it doesn't have the feel of New York of Philadelphia, the area is definitely urban. Also, Pitt is a large school—you're in for some big lecture classes and a somewhat overwhelming campus during the first year or so. Everything will seem to get smaller after you've been around awhile, though. Weather can be a concern if you're used to a warmer climate—snow, rain, and wind rule Pittsburgh winters. This is something that you can easily get used to though, unless you're a diehard warm weather fan.

What Pitt does offer is high-caliber academics, plenty of student organizations, and countless opportunities, such as study abroad, cultural activities, and sports. If you're willing to become active on campus, there's a lot more to Pitt than meets the eye. The University's location can also be a great advantage—Pittsburgh itself is a great city that is a positive environment for students to live and learn in, thanks in part to the city being home to a number of colleges and universities. The social scene is always jumping, locals are friendly, and there's always something to do if you explore a little. The best idea is to visit and try to get a feel for the area. You can get the same quality education at Pitt that can be found in many smaller, expensive schools, but here you'll pay less to have a vibrant city right at your doorstep.
