Drug Safety: There is a drug problem some places but people act like it is nonexistent

Greek Life: It doesn't have a big reputation and doesn't affect how the schools social scene is run.

Administration: Strict when they don't need to be and lenient when they need to be

Diversity: Pitt is very accepting of different cultures and personalities. I love being here

Transportation: There is always a way to get around the campus and the city.

Weather: Pittsburgh has crazy weather sometimes but it is always nicer than where I lived before.

Diversity: Coming from a Catholic school, I saw no diversity and now I see it every day.

Technology: The computers, tech labs and tech help are all great. We get free software and free help with our computers whenever we need it. The wireless network is probably the worst wifi I've ever used. It is almost impossible to stream movies or music and sometimes, even checking my Pitt email is a 10 minute process just for the page to load. That is one thing Pitt really needs to work on.

Transportation: The school shuttle is helpful, but unreliable in the winter especially.

Local Area: Coming from a small, rural town, I love Pittsburgh. There is so much to do but I don't feel like I'm about to get mugged or killed everytime I walk outside. I feel comfortable enough walking alone in the dark as well.

Athletics: I love the football games, I've heard the basketball games are better though.

Campus Housing: I live in an older, all girls dorm. It has no AC, but the rooms are very large and the heat works well.

Academics: You can find just about anything in terms of academics at Pitt. I've only had one professor I didn't like so far.

Off-Campus Dining: I try not to use too many of my Panther Funds on off-campus dining. Forbes ave is a mix of nicer restaraunts (Joe Mamma's) and then places like noodles and company and five guys where you can get a meal for less than $10

Greek Life: I'm in a service fraternity, but it is not part of the Greek system. There are a few sororities and fraternities that are known for being particularly snobby or rude, but besides that, its not uncommon to have a large mix of friends, some of whom are in sororities/fraternities.

Scholarships: Because we're a state school, I was not expecting much in the way of scholarships - however, when I initially did not receive any aid from the school, I contact the financial aid office and basically explained that if I didn't get more financial help, I would not be able to attend. Right away, I was offered two scholarships and two grants.

Administration: Strictness depends on what dorm you live in. I live in a very strict dorm, however, I also don't participate in anything that would get me in trouble, so I'm not bothered.

Overall ExperienceWhat's this?

View student contributors

Overall, students agree that they wouldn't trade their Pitt experience for anything. As with most decisions, there are a lot of things to consider. If you don't like living in a city environment, Pittsburgh may not be the place for you. While it doesn't have the feel of New York of Philadelphia, the area is definitely urban. Also, Pitt is a large school—you're in for some big lecture classes and a somewhat overwhelming campus during the first year or so. Everything will seem to get smaller after you've been around awhile, though. Weather can be a concern if you're used to a warmer climate—snow, rain, and wind rule Pittsburgh winters. This is something that you can easily get used to though, unless you're a diehard warm weather fan.

What Pitt does offer is high-caliber academics, plenty of student organizations, and countless opportunities, such as study abroad, cultural activities, and sports. If you're willing to become active on campus, there's a lot more to Pitt than meets the eye. The University's location can also be a great advantage—Pittsburgh itself is a great city that is a positive environment for students to live and learn in, thanks in part to the city being home to a number of colleges and universities. The social scene is always jumping, locals are friendly, and there's always something to do if you explore a little. The best idea is to visit and try to get a feel for the area. You can get the same quality education at Pitt that can be found in many smaller, expensive schools, but here you'll pay less to have a vibrant city right at your doorstep.
