Party Scene: There are several bars in oakland that are practically on campus and are full every weekend. Since half of the students live off campus there are always house parties to attend as well. The southside is a strip of bars and clubs that can be fun but do not take the bus because they stop running at a certain time and you will be stranded unless you catch a taxi

Campus Housing: On campus housing is a wild card which would explain why almost half of the students live off campus. Some dorms are very friendly and communal while others are full of loners making it extremely difficult to meet people. Since the school is right next to a hospital with a trauma center, some of the dorms come with helicopter traffic throughout all hours of the night making studying and sleeping difficult. On the other hand there are some dorms that are state of the art and in the same building of the main dining hall.

Athletics: Our sports teams are always near the top of the standings. Students love attending the games and create one of the best student sections in the country

Overall Experience: For such a big school the class sizes are generally small enough to get to know many of your professors. Even classes in the larger lecture halls provide opportunities to get to know professors during office hours.

5 College Junior

Overall Experience: Career fairs occur numerous times throughout the year and the school is very helpful in offering internship and employment opportunities

Local Area: Being from a big city Pitt is perfect for me. It isn't as fast paced as New York but still offers the city life that I an accustomed to.

Academics: Professors are very helpful and most are willing to meet during office hours or outside of office ours if you set up an appointment

Academics: There aren't many sociology majors at Pitt but it is a great program in and out of the classroom. In addition to the excellent curriculum there are numerous opportunities for outside hands on experience

Administration: Campus rules are very lenient as long as they aren't blatantly violated or taken advantage of

Scholarships: The financial aid office can be very helpful but only if you are extremely persistent.

Off-Campus Housing: The side streets are lined with housing intended for students. In some cases, however, the students may not maintain proper cleanliness. Also, the landlords in this particular area have a bad reputation for the most part.

Off-Campus Dining: There may not be another campus that provides the kind of off-campus dining that Oakland does. There are endless food options which make my mouth water just writing this.

Party Scene: While some students may only care about what is going on during the weekends, the university maintains a majority of students that attend college solely to get an education. The University of Pittsburgh does not have the reputation of a party school, but more of a "get down to work" kind of school, which I find very respectful.

3 College Sophomore

Campus Food: While the availability of food is abundant, there is a lack of variety in the campus dining halls.

3 College Sophomore

Overall Experience: There is a huge variation in overall attitude and teaching ability among the professors. While some professors are very effective in their efforts, some can be rather unapproachable and unhelpful.

5 College Sophomore

Overall Experience: There are unlimited opportunities for students to find an internship on campus. There is also a heavy emphasis on creating relationships with alumni and university staff.

5 College Sophomore

Academics: Academics are taken very seriously at the University of Pittsburgh, especially in the field of engineering. It is because of this that the university is held to such a high standard and maintains a respected reputation.

4 College Sophomore

Academics: Civil engineering is everything that I had hoped and expected it to be. While the workload is rather heavy, the curriculum is geared towards providing students with a top-notch education. The Swanson School of Engineering provides an ideal atmosphere for learning. The co-op program at the school is also a very rewarding experience.

Campus Housing: The city setting is ideal for a college atmosphere, in that it provides each student with an opportunity to grow. The overall availability of services is also something that cannot be overlooked.

5 College Sophomore

Diversity: There is such variation in ethnicity at the University of Pittsburgh that it is almost impossible to differentiate between a "majority" or a "minority." At the university, everyone is welcome and is treated with fairness and respect.

4 College Sophomore

Guys & Girls: The University does a stellar job of selecting its students, therefore almost every student is well-rounded. There are many students that I have met that participate in student organizations and really enjoy getting to know new people.

5 College Sophomore

Campus Quality: The atmosphere of the University of Pittsburgh is unparalleled. The city setting is ideal for any college student in that it provides unlimited opportunities to have fun and receive a full education.

2 College Senior

Campus Quality: I think Pitt wants to maintain more of a science setting and not arts.

3 College Senior

Health & Safety: Health services are good, but the hours are limited. It often takes days or weeks to get in to be seen,

4 College Senior

Greek Life: I wish I had checked out the Greek life sooner.

Overall, students agree that they wouldn't trade their Pitt experience for anything. As with most decisions, there are a lot of things to consider. If you don't like living in a city environment, Pittsburgh may not be the place for you. While it doesn't have the feel of New York of Philadelphia, the area is definitely urban. Also, Pitt is a large school—you're in for some big lecture classes and a somewhat overwhelming campus during the first year or so. Everything will seem to get smaller after you've been around awhile, though. Weather can be a concern if you're used to a warmer climate—snow, rain, and wind rule Pittsburgh winters. This is something that you can easily get used to though, unless you're a diehard warm weather fan.

What Pitt does offer is high-caliber academics, plenty of student organizations, and countless opportunities, such as study abroad, cultural activities, and sports. If you're willing to become active on campus, there's a lot more to Pitt than meets the eye. The University's location can also be a great advantage—Pittsburgh itself is a great city that is a positive environment for students to live and learn in, thanks in part to the city being home to a number of colleges and universities. The social scene is always jumping, locals are friendly, and there's always something to do if you explore a little. The best idea is to visit and try to get a feel for the area. You can get the same quality education at Pitt that can be found in many smaller, expensive schools, but here you'll pay less to have a vibrant city right at your doorstep.
