Party Scene

4 College Senior

Party Scene: There are a lot of parties if that's what you are looking for. If you want to have peace and tranquility, don't opt for the residences.

4 College Junior

Party Scene: Popular places to party include 1848 (campus bar), which has great drink specials most nights and good music. Otherwise there is the Byward Market with a myriad of places to drink and dance, ranging from Lookout (gay club) to Fat Tuesdays (with dueling pianos!). Or, there is even a ton of places on Bank St, which is a little further than the Byward Market but in a different direction. There are always taxis around, and OC Transpo drivers must give you a ride if you are drunk, so you'd be hard-pressed to find an excuse to drink and drive. Students' house parties often take place in Sandy Hill, which is a community of around 10 blocks full of students, so there is always something happening. I find the amount of partying to be disappointing, since I'm not into that, but for those who are, more power to them.

1 Recent Alumnus

Party Scene: Nightlife in Ottawa is great if you can drive to Montreal.

No matter what you like to do, there will be something that fits your tastes.

With the backyard of the University being Ottawa's lively downtown, there is always something to do at night. Whether you're a bar person, a club person, or looking for something else entirely, there are so many different locales for you to relax and unwind. ByWard Market is a student favorite, especially because of the diversity of its establishments. Whether you're a jazz or country person, there's a spot for almost every music lover. A number of places host student nights—usually on Thursdays and Fridays—so you can always find a good deal. Student favorites include MacLaren's, a pool bar on Elgin Street; Canadian Cabin, a country bar and lounge; and Mansion, a house and Top 40 nightclub. The most popular sports bars are right on campus, such as Father & Sons and the Draft Pub. Most clubs and bars in Ottawa are 19-and-up, but if you're not 19, you can always celebrate in the residence halls or in Gatineau-Hull, where most of the locales are 18-and-up or have designated "all ages" nights.

LGBT? Ottawa has quite a number of gay bars, including The Lookout Bar, Swizzles, and The Flamingo. Not into clubs or bars? Explore history on Parliament Hill; the Mosaika light and sound show is presented every night July through September. Or you can check out one of Ottawa's cultural communities, such as Little Italy or Chinatown. For laughs, Absolute Comedy features Canadian and American comics every night. Even if you just feel like a 4 a.m. snack, Zak's and Dunn's diners offer 24/7 eats with favorites such as smoke-meat sandwiches and French onion soup. Whatever your fancy, there's always something to do at night in Ottawa!
