3 College Freshman

Local Area: It's South Bend. Nothing special, but what you need. I don't leave campus except for parties usually. It doesn't affect my college experience whatsoever.

3 College Freshman

Local Area: South Bend is nothing without the university.

3 College Freshman

Local Area: It's okay to be here but a lot of stuff is far away and even though the buses run throughout town, I have concerns about my safety when traveling around on them since I don't know the city that well. Also, the type of crimes committed on and off campus leave me wary of venturing away too far.

2 College Junior

Local Area: South Bend is dangerous and there is not much to do further off campus than just one street. There is a nice mall, but I usually never have time to go there. There isn't much reason to leave campus either, because we have a student grocery store called the Huddle and other places to eat besides the dining hall. They also show movies every friday and saturday in the large class room.

At Notre Dame, a trip off campus is not a fun-filled vacation in Beverly Hills (or a walk in the park, for that matter). As you can see, most students find the South Bend atmosphere to be disconcerting. The consensus is that this is not a quaint college town, but a dirty and somewhat dangerous small industrial city. While some students confess a longing for the relief of big city activities and attractions, most will admit that, although South Bend is not their favorite town, they find comfort in the isolation of the Notre Dame "bubble."

Notre Dame is so isolated from South Bend that it even has its own ZIP code. In the minds of many students, they believe this is a good thing. South Bend is a poor city and has many rough neighborhoods. While this may make it difficult for many students to feel comfortable venturing off campus, leaving the Notre Dame "bubble" to run errands is a feasible idea, as long as you know what areas to avoid. However, the lack of student attractions and the disparaging comments from students, leaves Notre Dame's location with low marks.
