5 College Freshman

Campus Quality: I believe the community here is very welcoming and much more accepting than people would expect.

Campus Quality: Green architecture and classic design - amazing.

Local Area: Even though I came from a warmer climate to South Bend, I really miss it. I have visited a few times since graduation and I get really excited every time I see a familiar campus landmark. I love this place even with its cold winters. South Bend is also only 90 minutes away from Chicago so cultural events are easily accessible if desired (but student life is busy and you don't actually get around to going very often, being realistic)

Weather: The weather can make things a bit gloomy in January/February, but it is really easy to cut through buildings on the way to class to break up the time spent walking around outside. Campus buildings are not spaced too far away from each other, so you do not need to walk around outside for too long if you want to avoid it.

Academics: The anthropology program was really great. I had a fantastic study abroad program, a wide range of classes on campus, and a really great senior thesis advisor. The faculty members support the events and research of other department members. I received funding for multiple summers of fieldwork as well.

Academics: The university has a wide selection of majors and a wide selection of grant programs to fund student research initiatives. There is also a great selection of study abroad opportunities and the study abroad office is opening up more programs to facilitate more options for science majors. There are lots of study spaces available late at night to students and each dorm has its own study areas as well, so there are plenty of options.

Off-Campus Dining: There are plenty of options if you have a car to get off-campus. Immediately on the edge of campus, there is a decent selection of restaurants (Chipotle, Five Guys, Macallisters), so even freshmen without cars can eat off-campus.

Guys & Girls: Gender relations are a bit strained at times and it can be a bit difficult to make friends with members of the opposite sex (especially if you are in a major without a lot of guys). This does not change my resolve that ND is the best university ever!

Athletics: ND football was a great (although heartbreaking at times) experience even during the years before our recent football championship run. The campus is flooded with fans and alumni starting every Friday of the football weekends and there are a whole series of related traditions.

Scholarships: I appealed my financial aid through writing a letter with my parents explaining our unique financial situation and the financial aid office increased my scholarship support! I demonstrated that I was committed to Notre Dame but needed a little extra help to make it happen. My financial aid package at Notre Dame was much better than what I received at many other private institutions.

Overall Experience: I LOVED THIS SCHOOL. The academic experience was fantastic. The university has lots of funding programs set aside for student academic initiatives, which allows students to have really awesome travel/internships/research/conference experiences. The community on campus is both unique and welcoming. The dorms are randomly assigned but instantly feel like home. The dorms even have their own chapels with Sunday evening masses, so each Sunday feels like being part of a special small community (students perhaps take the sign of peace a little over the top in efforts to greet all their friends). The school spirit and traditions make students feel like they are part of a truly special institution and I am always proud to tell people I attended Notre Dame even if they do not understand the campus pride/culture. The campus supports a wide variety of service initiatives, so it is very easy to get involved in a good cause.

Party Scene: Cover is never more than $5, so going out is cheap! The Backer (on the edge of campus) is always really fun on Saturday nights and the DJ is fantastic (he always has the same last three songs which include the university fight song)

Parking: I did not have a car, but my friends with cars were always able to find spots within the student parking lot.

Campus Housing: The dorms are a really great source of community. Hall councils regularly plan events and each hall has its own traditions.

Health & Safety: Campus police officers are very friendly and enjoy getting to know students. They are regularly conduct rounds across campus every evening.

Off-Campus Housing: Even though students don't normally get off-campus housing until senior year, that is only because students love the campus of Notre Dame so much.

Overall ExperienceWhat's this?

"Wonderful," "amazing," "special," "family"-these are the most common words that students use to describe their times at Notre Dame. The University has a unique atmosphere that is embraced by many; the campus is basically self-contained, the dorms are all very close-knit, and there are truly strong connections between students. While the weather may test your survival skills and the administration may try your patience, the Notre Dame experience is unlike any other you'll ever have. The school's tradition and history create an environment where you'll feel welcomed the moment you step foot on campus.

Notre Dame is not an easy school, and it's important to remember that academics are huge. Above all else, you need to be willing to study and focus, or you're not going to make it through the University's workload. Students here are universally dedicated to their studies, and campus life reflects it. This is not a party school. Students may find themselves frustrated by the value system or the lack of outside activities. The best recommendation for Notre Dame is to visit and check out campus life firsthand. Often, the atmosphere alone is enough to sway your feelings one way or the other.
