4 College Sophomore

Health & Safety: People feel very safe on campus. No need to worry about sexual assault

Campus Housing: Notre Dame has a strong dorm community. People mainly meet their friends through the dorm they get. It's all random selection unless you have a family member there or that went there. If you're a guy, you don't want to be in Carroll because it is impossibly out of the way of campus. Many of the dorms don't have air-conditioning but people don't seem to mind at all.

Party Scene: Very underrated party scene at ND. You can find people who go out almost every night of the week.

Administration: If you are into marijuana, this place is not for you. The school is very strict when it comes to weed on campus. Bars are pretty easy to get into if you have a decent fake, and there's no need to worry about drinking in the guys dorms. However, RAs in the girls dorms are some of the most strict, fun-crushing people on campus so don't mess around in the girls halls.

Athletics: The best time of the year is when the football team is winning. Everyone pretty much follows the team and goes to the games. A lot of students get exercise, but some are gym class heroes or take things a little too seriously at the rec center. Also, athletes are treated like gods at Notre Dame.

Campus Food: By college dining hall standards, the food here is amazing. Lots of options and South Dining Hall is absolutely beautiful.

Academics: Amazing professors who are leaders in their fields. The course variety is amazing and the facilities for the most part are state of the art.

Diversity: The university is still predominantly upper to middle class Catholic whites but this is because the majority of those who apply fall into this category. As many kids went to Catholic high schools as public, creating a conservative mood on campus.

Scholarships: Strong financial aid, since most students are well off the university can afford to give good financial aid to those who are not.

Campus Housing: The dorm system builds brotherhood within dorms and provides dynamic social opportunities. That being said the quality of dorms varies greatly based on lottery assignment. Older dorms have no a/c (only an issue for the first two weeks) and smaller rooms, but have greater tradition than newer dorms.

Majors: Pretty good selection of majors and the professors are amazing. Many people take classes as electives and end up falling in love with a major.

Administration: Very lenient with beer (including underage drinking, but not so much with drugs or hard alcohol. Very strict honor code as evidenced by all the football players getting kicked off the football team for violations.

Party Scene: Great if you are into parties, with a good balance of dorm and off campus locations.

Off-Campus Housing: From what I hear from upperclassmen, housing options are cheap and the freedom is great.

3 College Freshman

Off-Campus Dining: You have your typical national chains and a few nice local restaurants. But this is not the Paris of the Midwest.

Local Area: While South Bend isn't as boring as I would imagine, it still doesn't make for a great college town. Not much activity going on outside of campus and Chicago is a good 2 hour drive on a toll road.

Health & Safety: Campus police is there when you need it. They do seem more concerned with keeping students safe rather than simply ruining all the fun.

Athletics: Notre Dame Football dominates fall weekends and tailgating becomes a ritual. Huge intramural sports program as over three quarters of the student body played varsity sports in high school.

Off-Campus Housing: Most people end up living off campus starting junior and senior year.

Overall ExperienceWhat's this?

View student contributors

"Wonderful," "amazing," "special," "family"-these are the most common words that students use to describe their times at Notre Dame. The University has a unique atmosphere that is embraced by many; the campus is basically self-contained, the dorms are all very close-knit, and there are truly strong connections between students. While the weather may test your survival skills and the administration may try your patience, the Notre Dame experience is unlike any other you'll ever have. The school's tradition and history create an environment where you'll feel welcomed the moment you step foot on campus.

Notre Dame is not an easy school, and it's important to remember that academics are huge. Above all else, you need to be willing to study and focus, or you're not going to make it through the University's workload. Students here are universally dedicated to their studies, and campus life reflects it. This is not a party school. Students may find themselves frustrated by the value system or the lack of outside activities. The best recommendation for Notre Dame is to visit and check out campus life firsthand. Often, the atmosphere alone is enough to sway your feelings one way or the other.
