5 College Sophomore

Campus Housing: I went from total opposites: Hardin, an all girls dorm, which I did not expect to live in, and Carmichael, the student-athlete dorm. Hardin was quiet, and may be the only quiet dorm at UNC, but was clean and the people there were hilarious. I made some of my best friends in Hardin! The rooms are HUGE! HUGE! HUGE! Many of my friends had corner rooms, which meant they had foyers and a room double the size of my already large room. Carmicheal is TINY! But I would not have chosen to live anywhere else, except maybe Morrison, which is on South Campus as well as Hardin. It is so lively and fun and is so CLOSE to campus! I would walk back and pick up papers, books, lunch, etc. from my dorm at least 3 times a day because it was so convenient! We also shared a bathroom between the suite of 4 rooms, where I shared a bathroom with only one room in Hardin. In Carmichael there are a lot of singles, so between the 4 rooms there were only 6 girls.

Here's the atmosphere breakdown:

First years:

Live in South Campus if you want to be around a lot of other students and get LOTS of free food. Granville is also awesome, but very loud, and is very far away from South Campus. If you are pursuing greek-life consider Granville, but otherwise 100% South Campus.

South Campus:

There is also a difference in dorm room size/ number of people sharing a bathroom. HoJo is the farthest dorm, but apparently the craziest experience- some kid repelled off HoJO last year.

Hardin, Koury, Horton, and Craige North are all clean and have larger rooms. Craige North is probably the "loudest" of that group, and Hardin the most quiet.

Eringhaus, HoJo, and Craige are all good options, but smaller rooms than the above and more people sharing bathrooms. These tend to be "louder" dorms as well. Morrison is for second years and above and is hype. Try to get a super suite if you can (as a sophomore).

Mid-campus is loud and CLOSE which is so nice. North Campus is quiet but LARGER rooms and CLOSER.

4 College Sophomore

Campus Housing: I love the dorm I live in- Kenan because it is beautiful and close to class and to the arboretum.

4 College Sophomore

Campus Housing: I love living on campus, it facilitates getting to classes and social life

3 College Freshman

Campus Housing: I need to live on campus, but my dorm was pretty far from my classes. Some are closer, but some mornings I had to take a 20+ minute walk to get to a class by 9 in the morning, which was inconvenient. I also find it to be a little pricy.

4 College Junior

Campus Housing: I really like the on campus apartments and I think it's effective to keep the first years together

Many undergraduates choose to reside on campus at UNC. Perhaps that is because the dorms on campus are quite nice or because of the myriad of social activities that are accesible on campus. One attractive feature of UNC housing is its convenience, as it stands right next to Franklin Street and as close as you can get to classes. Among traditional dorms and suite style dorms, UNC also offers living and learning communities with different themes for those interested in interacting with hallmates who share the same interests. Most living communities feature a recreational area, laundry facility, and outdoor sports area nearby. Dorms also come equipped with cooking supplies, movies, vacuums, and even gaming consoles for students to use.

UNC even offers a free "Fix My Room" service where residents report problems and someone on staff will come by promptly to fix the issues. UNC often spends time and money upgrading the dorms over the summer to give students a more comfortable and satisfying experience. Overall, students at UNC are happy with their living arrangements on campus, and many find their closest friends through residential life.
