Students are well advised before starting their years at Carolina about the dangers and consequences of activities like underage drinking, drug abuse, and honor violations. Underage drinking is taken seriously on campus. If you are caught, however, many RAs and campus police will turn a blind eye if it seems that it is being done in a responsible manner. They are here to protect students, so if a student is being obnoxious, loud, or disruptive to other residents, or if there is a safety concern, they are likely to be harsh on punishment. If you choose to engage in underage drinking, do it quietly, and don't get caught—otherwise you will be facing some steep fines.

The University is more strict about drug use, such as use of marijuana, cocaine, and ecstasy. Students caught doing this may face academic suspension of a semester and many other consequences that, frankly, aren't worth it. Carolina also takes Honor Court very seriously. The school trusts in its students, and that is taken very seriously here. Students give punishments to other students by means of Honor Court, and these are typically suspensions and failure of a class for things like plagiarism. It is advisable to keep your honor in tact and avoid these consequences.
