Guys & Girls: It's at the beach, so lots of good looking people. They also do fun things.

Guys & Girls: There's a wide variety of stereotypes from fratty/sratty to beach bums to hipsters to punks. The largest demographic is definitely well-groomed white middle-class students whose parents are paying for their education. Most students drink alcohol but balance it well with their academics-and you know who the people are who don't know how to balance. Though there are 12,000+ undergraduates you seem to cross paths with the same people day after day. There is very little sense of community or school spirit. All we have to brag about is the beach.

UNCW is home to a lot of attractive people. The girl-to-guy ratio is reflective of most universities in the United States, with more girls than guys; UNCW has represented a ratio of 60:40, but growth toward a more even balance of numbers has been noticed recently, so who knows what UNCW will look like in the next few years. A lot of students are physically fit. They enjoy exercising and spending time outside, so students are in shape and have a sun-kissed glow most of the year. However, UNCW's large variety of majors and academic interests makes for a variety of student styles, as well. There are students who are hipsters, skaters, gamers, preps, and a lot that are an eclectic mixture of a lot of styles.

Students relate to each other because everyone is welcoming, open-minded, and inviting. The laid-back environment makes for strong friendships and relationships because it's in the students' nature to be open and not shut anyone out—acceptance is a given at UNCW. So, along those lines, boy-girl romantic relationships on campus come in all varieties. There are students who are just going to be more carefree and anti-monogamy, but there's just as many—if not more—who are open to getting into a relationship. Students are definitely not reserved at UNCW, and they're ready for anything and everything!

Social Scene
UNCW is known for its very inviting, welcoming, and accepting students. Starting freshman year, everyone just wants to meet everyone, and everyone treats everyone as a friend. There's plenty of interaction between students as long as students put themselves out there. Most students are outgoing and thrive off of social interactions.
Hookups or Relationships?
There is a pretty equal balance between hookups and relationships. A lot of people may hook up at parties, at clubs downtown, or with people they meet on campus. Sometimes these hookups develop into relationships, or sometimes relationships are discovered in lesser nightlife environments, such as in the residence hall, class, or in organizations or clubs. The relationships that seem strongest start off as friendships first, then develop into something more.
Dress Code
UNCW is a very laid-back campus, with a lot of students wearing shorts, T-shirts, and flip-flops to class when it's warm. Some students continue to wear flip-flops during the winter months, too. Casual attire is custom for classes, as well as for on-campus dining and meetings. When going to parties, downtown, or to the bars, dress codes are still relatively casual, but simple dresses for girls and collared shirts for guys are acceptable. Teal is always a good thing and really shows your Seahawk spirit!
