Local Area: Ann Arbor is a very accessible small town with elements of urban life without being too huge or overwhelming. There is plenty of arts, culture, and food both on UofM's campus and downtown. The variety of independent shops in clothing, books, entertainment, jewelry, etc make for eclectic shopping, even if you're just going window shopping. Plus there is plenty of theatre and performance venues as well as two movie theatres. There are a lot of festivals going around in town and cultural and entertainment events are constantly being coordinated by student organizations and campus departments. Even if you're not huge party or club person, like me, you'll find plenty to do. There are also great bars, cafes, and restaurants with awesome atmospheres to experience. Of course if you're on a tight budget, you'll have to limit some of these activities, but there are free or low-cost opportunities all the time.

Scholarships: I've gotten no scholarships or grants only loans and work study. The income level cut-off makes it extremely difficult for some students to stay focused on their studies while worrying about a huge debt collecting and paying for their own room and board, even while being enrolled full-time.

Majors: You get out of the school, and the program whatever you put into it

Local Area: Ann Arbor is a great place to live. I have no hope of ever running out of things to do here. There are performances and other cultural events all the time. The Arboretum and other parks are beautiful places to explore, and the entire town rallies around Michigan sports. In case you end up looking for a change of scene, Michigan State is an hour away, and though we might be rival schools it's a great place to hang out as well.

Diversity: I have found Ann Arbor to be a very diverse place. I came here as an out-of-state student and met people from around the country and around the world. It's a very friendly place; it is easy to get to know people and learn something about others' experiences.

Off-Campus Dining: There are many various and diverse dining areas around the college, available to students and guests.

Technology: Amazing amounts of resources, computer labs, printing etc.

Drug Safety: My friends and I do not use drugs. Some students may do but it is OK.

Weather: Cold and heavy snow in winter. Very hot in summer.....The winter is really long. Do not come to the UM if you hate cold or snow.

Off-Campus Housing: Central campus apartments or houses are more expensive than north but more convenient. If you wanna live off-campus, you should look for it at least 4 months earlier and you can definitely get one you like.

Parking: On-street parking is reasonable but scarce. There are a few parking structures that usually have available spots, but they are scattered around town and cost more.

Off-Campus Housing: Decent off-campus housing is scarce. You have to arrange for off-campus housing many months (or even a year) in advance. Many of the rental houses and apartments are run down and still pricey.

4 College Sophomore

Technology: Many available at all libraries. However, most students have there own laptop.

3 College Sophomore

Scholarships: I had a difficult time getting financial aid from UM. They stress diversity a lot and getting aid is very competitive, especially for out-of-staters. I suggest starting very early with scholarships and the finaid process.

Campus Quality: Everything in the town caters to college students. The football scene really sets U of M apart from the others. There is such a sense of pride among the students and the local residents. Greek life is big, but not a necessity. There's plenty to do and tons of people who aren't involved and still have a great time. Frats hold most parties to underclassmen, but there are bars and house parties, as well.

Local Area: There is always something to do in Ann Arbor! And the spirit of the town is unbelievable! You can't go out without seeing someone wearing U of M paraphernalia. It is so nice to see people of all ages supporting the University!

Campus Quality: University of Michigan has facilities for all aspects of student life. Multiple libraries, various sports facilities, and general hangouts dedicated to student happiness and life. There is an endless offering of student organizations to join and if those don't suit you, you can always create your own!

Health & Safety: Pretty Safe – The campus is pretty safe, but the main campus is heavily integrated into Ann Arbor, so there are a lot of non-students on campus. Theft of unattended computers and valuables in the main student libraries is not uncommon, and young women on the streets late at night (2am on) should be careful.

Administration: It's pretty avergae. For drinking, you get an MIP, if underage. If of age, you can drink alone in your dorm room. For cheating, you can be expelled :-(

Academics: Psych and Soc! Soc and Psych were amazing programs, with a lot of resources and access to teachers and GSIs.

Academics: Leaders and Best – Michigan is all around amazing. The work load is heavy but you leave prepared for anything you face in the world. The professors are always available and willing to help and there are endless resources on campus to fulfill your needs.

Greek Life: Greeklife Isn't Priority – A lot of MICHIGAN students are greek but academics always come first. For the NPHC, it's more about the programs that are put on instead of the parties taht are thrown. For PHC, it's more of a social thing. It can hurt your grades too if you don't have good time management skills.

Parking: Parking is terrible here! Always packed lots, and the lots available to graduate students (and undergrads) are not that conveniently located. Granted, there are many public transportation options from many lots, but the lots themselves are not great. It is faster for me to walk to school than to drive to a parking lot and walk/bus from there. Not helpful! Parking also gets expensive. The passes are pricey, ticketing is strict, and to park without a pass is also expensive.

Off-Campus Housing: Off Campus Can Get Expensive Fast – For someone who does not wish to have a roommate, off-campus (and on-campus) housing can get expensive quickly. The choices are somewhat limited, but most are safe. A variety of location choices are available, but none are particularly great.

Despite the occasional complaints about weather, students at the University of Michigan love their school. With its outstanding academics in conjunction with its remarkable athletics, Michigan offers a perfect college balance: a great education and a fun social atmosphere. It is not uncommon to find students sporting Michigan gear around campus, and if given a choice, most would choose the school over again. Students love that they can mold their school to best suit their individual needs and desires. Whether they are looking for academics, athletics, or social outlets, Michigan fits the bill: In addition to its highly-ranked academics, it has a highly respected athletic reputation, and Ann Arbor's atmosphere is one to be envied, consisting of restaurants, shops, bars, and much more. Michigan alumni are expansive in both numbers and location. Michigan's alumni network is one of the largest, with many individuals holding vital positions in their respective industries.
