Party Scene: There are many parties and events on and off campus.

Health & Safety: I have lived on campus for my first two years at U of M. The campus is well lit, there is great security at the dorms, and I feel for the most part, safe. As with any environment, common sense and awareness of your surroundings plays a part in how safe you are.

Local Area: There are a lot of things to do and see on campus and in the city of Ann Arbor. U of M is firmly integrated in the fabric of the city.

Off-Campus Dining: Great variety of quaint places with good, unique food. It's just super expensive for the most part (there are a lot of out-of-town visitors who support those places--not the college kids). I'm still looking for the good, hole-in-the-wall spots--some of the ones I've explored are terrible but some are actually really good.

Majors: It seems that UM has fantastic programs for everything from music, theatre, and writing to engineering, nursing, and paleontology. I love it because they allow you freedom to craft your own program and focus on classes which will help you specifically. The workload can be either heavy or light, depending on the classes of course but also on your goals with the class. If you really want to learn and do well, it takes much more work, but that's personal motivation. The facilities are decent, although they need remodeling (as they're doing with the School of Music now); the sound acoustics aren't really the best and there need to be more practice rooms. The students lead most of the extra things which really give you experience: it's the students who gather ensembles to help with their recitals or recording projects, so you end up learning from class but really being able to put your skills to work in a functioning, dynamic system of performing. And that performance includes everything from newly composed music to classical performances to improvisation groups to collaborations with dancers to performance art.

Campus Housing: It's really fantastic, easy to get where you need to go because the transportation system is frequent and generally reliable. Much easier than living off campus, because it's difficult to find parking places. The cost is unnecessarily high, but the cost of off-campus housing in Ann Arbor is also high, so once you add in the amenities, internet, furniture, etc. the costs aren't too far apart, and on-campus is much more efficient. They provide great furniture on campus: everything you really need from beds, desks, bookshelves, dressers, and chairs to coffee tables and dinner tables. The social atmosphere is also great if you want it to be in the dorms; I met my closest college friends in my dorm hall. There are tons of community-building activities or just fun things to do that are advertised all the time, so you have a ton of opportunities that are totally optional, depending on what you feel like doing. But if you want to keep to yourself, you can do that too. In the on-campus apartments the social life is pretty bleak, but hopefully by the time you've moved there you already have a good base of friends, and honestly the quiet is nice there too. You're pretty much free to do what you want as long as you're responsible with the property.

Campus Housing: Roommates are blind selection and are hard to change so bully for you if you get a bad one

Academics: Lots and lots of class and major choices and think about how to combine things for a major minor combo

3 College Senior

Academics: Challenging but fun, have two years left and will be able to complete on time with a double major and a minor

3 College Senior

Majors: Be prepared to make up your mind early and always meet with the professors in your interest area even if you aren't in their class yet

Health & Safety: Needs more blue lights and more obvious police presence at night especially on campus

Overall Experience: So far my experience has been great. UofM is absolutely the best school for me. There are always professors that you don't like or you don't respect, but that is everywhere, and so far there haven't been many in my experience at UofM. Advice from older siblings on which professors to avoid has helped, but so have the professor ratings that are available online. I don't always follow that information in selecting classes, but I look at it for information about the professors. That way I can tell if someone's complaint is something that would or wouldn't bother me, since I know that everyone reacts differently. But when they describe the problems, I can judge whether I can handle them. The overall quality of most courses at UofM is top notch, and there is a wide variety of class size and class style. Students in the sciences have it a bit tougher because their options are usually more limited to large lectures. There are so many science majors who go to UofM that the advising process is also harder for them, due to sheer numbers.

Overall Experience: UofM has one of the best alumni networks in the country. It is a well known and well respected school and is probably the best school you can pick if you are from Michigan. A degree from Michigan will open a lot of doors. It might not get you the job, but it almost certainly will get you the interview. The rest is up to you.

Campus Food: Some dining halls are very good, some are very bad. Choose carefully

5 College Sophomore

Majors: I am in the process of exploring majors, while still taking classes that meet LS&A degree requirements. Therefore, my classes are varied. I like the fact that there are so many options. So, for people like me, who want to explore the arts, I can find a math class that will meet the requirements but still be interesting for me. UofM has so many options that it can make your head swim, and students need to take advantage of the advising process in order to optimize their time and talent.

4 College Sophomore

Academics: I have found that the academics at UofM are challenging. Like everywhere else, there are professors that I don't like, and I don't always think that it's fair when I can't get into a class that I want. But they have procedures in place to get waitlisted for classes in case space opens up, and they try to be fair with the registration process. I find it necessary to study a lot in order to keep up with my classes, but I enjoy the challenge, and for the first time in my life I am actually enjoying the learning process. It is so different from high school, but so much more interesting. To me, the study time doesn't feel like work. I actually enjoy it.

Administration: It seems to me that the university is most strict on its academic standards, as it should be. I have not had experience with other types of violations, like underage drinking or dorm visits, but I know that there is a lot of drinking that goes on, and that it doesn't get caught. I have not had any personal experience with academic problems, but I know what the rules are and I know from other people that they are strictly enforced.

4 College Sophomore

Diversity: UofM is well known for the diversity of its student body, and it shows. It is also a well known school globally so we have many international students.

3 College Sophomore

Campus Food: Like all college students, I get tired of cafeteria food and I miss home cooking. Overall, however, the campus food is decent and we have other options for fast food, where our campus dining dollars are accepted.

Despite the occasional complaints about weather, students at the University of Michigan love their school. With its outstanding academics in conjunction with its remarkable athletics, Michigan offers a perfect college balance: a great education and a fun social atmosphere. It is not uncommon to find students sporting Michigan gear around campus, and if given a choice, most would choose the school over again. Students love that they can mold their school to best suit their individual needs and desires. Whether they are looking for academics, athletics, or social outlets, Michigan fits the bill: In addition to its highly-ranked academics, it has a highly respected athletic reputation, and Ann Arbor's atmosphere is one to be envied, consisting of restaurants, shops, bars, and much more. Michigan alumni are expansive in both numbers and location. Michigan's alumni network is one of the largest, with many individuals holding vital positions in their respective industries. Alumni love to return to Ann Arbor for visits and sporting events, often bringing their spouses and children. It has been said, "Once a Wolverine, always a Wolverine."
