It is far more common for students at UMass to use alcohol on the weekends than drugs, but marijuana takes a close second. Other drugs that could be considered "popular" here are prescription drugs like Adderall and ecstasy, but users of hard drugs tend to stay under the radar about their behavior. Due to the huge population at UMass, it is possible to find any type of drug you could ever want, but drugs are also completely avoidable. You may be asked if you want to drink or smoke weed (most likely for the sake of politeness), but don't worry about being pressured to use hard drugs unless you seek them out. Central Residential Area has the most noticeable drug culture on campus, but Southwest is not far behind. However, the UMPD and Amherst Police Department do their jobs well and deter people from doing drugs. For example, a large drug bust was made in Southwest one semester, and police confiscated large quantities of drugs and money. Sure enough, the front page of the next day's Daily Collegian was completely devoted to this story. Tactics like this are just one of the ways police remind students that drugs will not be tolerated on campus. Basically, the bottom line is that yes, drugs are around and available. But if you wish to not partake in the activity, there are plenty of other activities to consume your time.
