Party Scene

{{ error }}
3 College Sophomore

Party Scene: Not many parties. Most originate in Westmo. Otherwise nightlife is not encouraged, especially outside of campus. It is very unsafe.

3 College Sophomore

Party Scene: I hosted a party with my friends. Nonalcoholic, and it was just as fun. Otherwise I have not been to any other parties.

4 College Junior

Party Scene: Again, this is something you can be involved in if you choose. Downtown Fredericksburg offers a lot of local and unique bar and restaurant options just a 10 minute walk from campus.

4 College Junior

Party Scene: Parties are definitely a social addition to the student life at UMW; you can be apart of them if you choose to do so.

3 College Freshman

Party Scene: I don't know. I don't partake, but things seem to be close

Prospective students should know that Mary Washington is not in the slightest bit a party school, but it still has parties. The most frequent complaint about the University is the nightlife, or rather, lack of it. That being said, the nightlife at the University isn't altogether nonexistent. There is a lot of truth to the "it's as fun as you make it" philosophy.

While there are no official fraternities or sororities supported by the school, various varsity sports and clubs often have parties off campus on the weekends. The downside to this is that if you don't have upperclassman friends who can drive you to parties, it can be a lot of walking. In addition, the few parties that do happen every weekend often get broken up by the police. There are a couple of bars within a reasonable driving distance, but there are no clubs, unless you are willing to drive 40 minutes to D.C. Aside from sports-affiliated parties and the occasional unofficial frat parties, students tend to just hang out together in small groups in either dorms or off-campus houses.

Organization Parties
Varsity sports throw big parties occasionally, as do the unofficial fraternities here. You don't necessarily have to be associated with the sports-you just have to hear about the party. And although the fraternities are "unofficial," they do throw parties sometimes that end up being pretty popular. Other than that, clubs and organizations tend to throw smaller parties where only the associated members attend.
