During the daytime, a student can be found relaxing in a coffee shop or sauntering the sidewalks while passing various, small shops downtown. Downtown is the only place within walking distance. Central Park is a short drive, and there, you'll find every chain restaurant and store imaginable, and on a nice day, it's enjoyable to walk around and visit the boutiques. Daytime activities seem to be redundant but plentiful, due to various shopping options. There is also the Marquee Cinemas that is as beautiful as it is historic, and it can be a great place to hang out with some friends.
A common complaint filed by students is the lack of nightlife opportunities. In terms of nightlife, Mary Washington is a quaint place with not too much to do. There are no clubs, and not too much is open past 12 a.m. However, there are a couple of bars downtown that are open until 2 a.m. that upperclassmen have found to be fun to go to. In terms of the surrounding neighborhood, there has been some tension between the local community and Mary Washington due to feelings of invasion with the growing number of college students, but overall, the locals tend to be friendly.
