Off-Campus Dining: There is a good handful of places you can go to and a majority of places offer student/weekly discounts that make it worth going to.

Off-Campus Dining: There are so many places so close together. They are all so good and I always find myself going back. Small town, but lot's of options.

3 College Sophomore

Off-Campus Dining: Sure down town Orono is tiny but there are at least 10 restaurants packed into the center of town. They're all pretty good.

3 College Freshman

Off-Campus Dining: I LOVE how theres a lot of dunkin donuts, but chipotle being closer would be better

Off-Campus Dining: Most of the interesting dining places are in Bangor, near the mall, but even that is only one exit up the highway.

Orono's restaurants provide a great variety in food choices. The restaurants in the area are among the most popular. Most of the restaurants are also unique to both the local area or to Maine. Very few franchises exist in Orono outside of fast food restaurants. The Black Bear Bucks program can be utilized at several of the area restaurants, but students must be aware of usage charges that the restaurants may apply for use of the card. The MaineCard funds may also only be used for on-campus deliveries, so don't expect to pay with it when you eat in the restaurants.

Many of the restaurants also have great bars that the residents find as appealing as the students do. Margarita's has a great bar and late-night lounge that offers a quiet and relaxed atmosphere, which can be interrupted by special nights such as Full Moon Madness, which offers students an excellent opportunity to crowd in and act a little rowdy. The Bear Brew also provides a very relaxed social atmosphere with friendly service and a nice bar. The food is among the best in Orono, but don't be in a rush, service is often slower than it is at other local restaurants. The Market Café is one of the most popular restaurants in the area, yet it is often overlooked because of its family diner-style appearance and location. The Market Café has an excellent selection of Greek food and some of the best pizza around. For a quiet night out, in a dining room overlooking the Stillwater river rapids near the dam, this is the place to relax.

Did You Know?
  • Lobster rolls, a cold lobster sandwich on a hot dog or hoagie roll, are not only a favorite Mainer's lunch, but they are available at many McDonald's restaurants throughout the state.
  • Popovers, a traditional bread product with a hollow-like inside, are frequently substituted for regular breads in some coastal restaurants.
  • More wild blueberries are produced in Maine than anywhere else in the world. Try them in your muffins, pancakes, or waffles. You're sure not to be disappointed with the freshest supply available anywhere.
  • Orono has a variety of restaurants to suit even the pickiest appetite. Students will find that many restaurants and other local businesses have discounts and participate in programs to attract student business. Many of the businesses are owned by local residents who feel that UMaine students are the reason Orono businesses thrive.
