3 College Freshman

Administration: Being a freshman, I mainly dealt with campus strictness coming from the RAs. Some of the RAs were extremely strict while other RAs were very lenient. For the most part, the police and RAs understand that the students are college students and will make mistakes but they still take their positions seriously and make sure that everyone is safe.

3 College Freshman

Administration: Attendance is a big thing for a lot of the classes. Professors are very strict about it! Also, underage drinking is also a big deal at my school.

3 College Freshman

Administration: The administration is average. They are strict in some ways and lenient in others.

4 College Freshman

Administration: If you live in a dorm, it really depends on your RA. Alcohol is always cheap and available, which is often too much freedom for some new students caught up in their new found freedom. Just be careful on unofficial- police are very active and will crack down on negligent behavior, especially underage drinking

2 College Freshman

Administration: I felt fairly protected by the campus safety, but also felt like I was still at home with my protective parents. The housing was very strict about everything. I felt like they were out to get people in trouble instead of making sure people are safe.

U of I is relatively tough on its students, although it really depends on the situation you find yourself in. The campus police do not turn a blind eye to drunks, or to students caught drinking underage. They are also tough on drugs and fights, especially when those fights take place in bars. Bar raids conducted by police are not uncommon, and some students say that there are times when raids can be predicted. Situations that involve alcohol and narcotics can really get out of control, which is why cops aren’t easy on offenders.

Students’ safety is the main concern of the campus police, and they are ever-present. Nevertheless, underage drinking is still pretty common, since minors are rarely caught. It is very easy for minors to buy drinks at bars. Basically, if you have the money or the friends to do it, you can drink easily. Still, getting busted for being underage means taking a big risk. If you are caught, you might get a $300 drinking fine, jail time, or worse. As one student put it, it’s just best to wait until you turn 21 and can go out to the bars and drink legally with your friends.
