Drug Safety: I haven't really seen too many people do drugs but I have seen people smoke. The drug safety is strict because there were two guys in my dorm who was caught smoking weed and the police came.

Guys & Girls: There is a variety of girls and boys at U of I. There's people from all over the world, literally, there are students from Africa, Asia, Europe, and of course all over America. At the U of I there is a chance for you to meet people from different cultures and also people from the same culture if you want some familiarity.

Diversity: The diversity on campus is very large; lots of races and religions at the U of I. All of the races and religions are accepted also. There is also a required seminar that freshman and transfer students must go to in order to learn more about the diversity on campus.

Transportation: There is a campus bus available to be able to go to the different buildings on campus. There are also buses available to go to Chicago and the different suburbs in Illinois, as well as the train.

Campus Quality: There are so many opportunities provided through the many facilities located around the campus. They fit the students needs to a match, as long as you know how to use them. The University is always promoting the usage of these areas as well.

Technology: Computers are always available for students to use and are always well kept and easy to manage. I, myself, am not technologically savy, but have a very easy time running the computers provided by the college.

Campus Quality: The University of Illinois campus life is incredible. There are events going on constantly and the buildings they are hosted in are well kept. There are always buildings being remodeled to accommodate to the students needs. There are plenty of organizations for students to participate in as well. From far and wide, it is a students dream! There are many places to study, to relax, and to participate in recreational activities.

Athletics: Whenever I attend the Athletics at the University of Illinois, I am surrounded by my fellow peers cheering for their team. From women's sports to male sports, events are usually crowded by the students. We support our teams wholeheartedly and these athletic events are advertised well around the campus.

Party Scene: U of I is known as a strong party school and if there is something you want to do on a night to relieve some stress, you can easily find it. U of I is one of the highest fraternal schools out there. There is a party almost every night somewhere on campus hosted by a fraternity. We have a good number of bars on campus where the minimum age to enter is 19, so bars are always open to anyone just wanting to go out. There is also the Illini Union where they host small events such as Musical or Comedy Acts, Movie Nights, Bowling, Video Games, or just socials for people to chill out and socialize. There's always something to do on campus, you just have to find it.

Majors: I haven't been able to obtain an internship yet, but the school allows plenty of opportunities for students. I do plan on obtaining one soon which is what's recommended for Engineering students.

5 College Junior

Majors: The process to become a Civil Engineering Major isn't difficult at all. They ask what major you prefer on your application to the school. You just have to check the box with major you want next to it. Then the 2 essay questions they ask you on the application deal with what you want to do with your life after you graduate with the major.

3 College Junior

Majors: I'm still happy on my pursuit to become a Civil Engineer. I'm not sure exactly if I want to pursue a primary in Transportation or Construction Management, but I am definitely going to choose one of the two. I believe after I graduate it will not be too difficult to locate a career with the prestige of my school, so I am confident I will find a job that I will be happy with.

Majors: I attend the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I have been very happy with my decision of U of I. The professors are extremely knowledgeable and passionate about what they teach, which allows me to stay interested in my major. They curriculum is difficult but not impossible with hard work. I have joined the National Society of Black Engineers on my campus, and they have helped me a great deal in my classes and my school life. I believe I will enjoy the rest of my years at U of I if I receive the same support I am already getting from the campus.

Campus Quality: Cutting edge technology across campus. Libraries are massive and offer plenty of places to study.

5 College Sophomore

Off-Campus Housing: The apartment buildings are numerous and on all sides of campus. You can get one close to your focused area on campus very easily. There is also a great variance in price range for different qualities.

Scholarships: The engineering scholarships at UIUC almost always go to minorities or women. If you are hoping to win one as a white male, good luck.

Campus Quality: Cutting edge technology, ranging from the front of the biomedical sector to the agricultural sector, and especially the engineering sector is unbelievable.

3 College Sophomore

Weather: The weather there is usually warmer than in Northern Illinois and sunnier! In the winter is doesn't get as bad but there are snow storms that can make it difficult to get around campus, but then you can just use the bus.

4 College Junior

Campus Quality: Illinois has great opportunities for finding internships, with many job fairs going on during the school year. It is also easy to get involved in clubs and to get involved with research. Professors are always available to talk to and love talking about their research and what they do. At Illinois I am never bored and have no excuses to not be participating in something that will benefit my future.

2 College Sophomore

Scholarships: I did not receive nearly as much financial aid as I would have liked. It is very hard to compete for scholarships at such a big and prestigious school.

4 College Sophomore

Campus Housing: Living on campus is always exciting and fun. Most of the dorms are very nice and comfortable. They are expensive, like most dorms, and apartments are usually cheaper.

Overall ExperienceWhat's this?

View student contributors

One might expect some tentative and even negative opinions about any school, but this is truly not the case here at U of I. Students are proud of U of I’s history, proud of is academic accomplishments, proud of the social opportunities it offers, and, most of all, they are proud to be alumni. For so many students to view their choice to come here as an unequivocally good one is a fantastic testament to the University’s strength.

Of course students here have plenty to complain about—the weather, the parking, the Greek social scene, the rural location. But all things considered, the positive points of the U of I experience tipped the scale—the University’s academic excellency, the safety, the social atmosphere, the athletic tradition, the city’s excellent transportation system. Some students admitted that they had a hard time adjusting, that they occasionally wished they had made another decision—but in the end, they were all happy to be here. The most encouraging fact was that so many people mentioned that they were leaving as better people, more knowledgeable, eclectic, and better equipped to navigate through life. University of Illinois students do not just leave with a piece of paper in their hands, they leave with a wealth of experience that is not easily rivaled—and, for in-staters, without enormous debt burdens to face when they graduate.
