Academics: Illinois is one of the top 3 schools for my major. With only 300 students in the major, it is a very close-knit atmosphere. It is unique in the fact that we have a class which requires a hands-on experience in which we develop and run a program

Administration: Overall, U of I is not that strict. There is the occasional bar raid, but you can drink underage pretty confidently

4 College Senior

Athletics: Athletics are very big at U of I. As seen from the RSO Illini Pride, there is a student section for every sport. The better the team does, the more students attend

3 College Senior

Off-Campus Dining: I would say the majority of dining takes place on campus because of the multitude of options. Once you get off campus, there are only a handful of places you can go to so it ends up just being a repetition of those locations.

4 College Senior

Local Area: The local atmosphere is the sheer definition of a college town. The campus town is incredible with lots to do, especially since it is 19 to get into the bars. However, once you get off of campus, there are mainly cornfields. There are a few malls and outlets, but it is pretty limited

Overall Experience: Growing up, I have always dreamed about going to U of I. The memories I have made and lifelong friends alone confirm I made the right choice. However, the opportunities available due to the U of I network is incredible and it is something not to be taken for granted.

4 College Senior

Campus Housing: Overall, campus housing is very good. It is easy to get to and from classes, convenient to meet new people, and everything is close by (dining halls, laundry, gym). the only downside is that a few of the campus housing is on the edge of campus

3 College Senior

Off-Campus Housing: Off-Campus housing is very affordable and there is a variety of locations. However, it can very difficult to go to and from campus depending on the bus/shuttle schedule

4 College Sophomore

Off-Campus Housing: There are many different types of off-campus housing. Anywhere from renting a room at a house, to a studio apartment, to 4 bedroom apartments. The range in amenities and cost. There are lots of options close to school, with bus transportation available, but parking at these apartments is very limited.

Campus Quality: Unofficial-Biggest St. Patrick's Day party ever. People come from other schools, all across the state, as well as other states to participate. HUGE event!

Campus Quality: Lots of different clubs, something for everyone. When you have as many students as the U of I does, you won't feel left out. There is always some organization to join or an event to attend.

3 College Sophomore

Campus Housing: Depending on the housing you get assigned, you could be a little ways away from your classes. They also have private dorms, that are more spacious, but cost a little extra money.

3 College Sophomore

Athletics: I'm a huge fan of the sports at this school, however, lately their performance is not very good. However, the town the University is located is called a "college-town" so the whole town is huge Illini fans. Thus, there is still a good turn out for Varsity sports.

3 College Sophomore

Local Area: There is not much near the campus except a shopping mall and some bars. Campus is very cute and has a great social scene, but there is not much to do off campus. The only attractions around our school would be sporting events/the Illinois Marathon. Students do not have much interaction with residents of the surrounding towns.

4 College Sophomore

Athletics: While most of our varsity teams are not the greatest, there is still a huge amount of student involvement and pride involved in them. Games are always fun and there are many traditions that make going to games a unique experience. Many students make use of the recreation facilities but I don't think many students are involved with club sports.

4 College Sophomore

Campus Housing: The housing process is incredibly easy and it is easy to get one of your top dorm options if you apply on time. Certain dorms have a better social atmosphere than others but the dorms are large so it is easy to meet someone that you will get along with. The cost is rather high, but you get a pretty large meal plan included in the cost of housing and most of the dorms are close to the quad/main campus buildings.

5 College Sophomore

Campus Quality: Overall, the facilities at our school are great and the advisors are very resourceful and helpful when it comes to helping students with their future plans. Our school is also very large which I believe gives it a very cliché college feel. Students at this school know how to work hard and play hard.

4 College Sophomore

Campus Quality: There are many different libraries on campus and they are in very convenient locations. The main workout facilities are the ARC and CRCE, which are both very clean and have many different machines. Most students just hang out in dorms/apartments, while some hang out in the union or student centers.

4 College Sophomore

Guys & Girls: The guys and girls at this school are very different, there is no one "type". Many people participate in greek life and have pregames/exchanges with other houses on campus. Almost all students are very ambitious and have big plans for their future which could be why not many people on campus have serious relationships. There is a large hookup culture on campus and most people are just looking to have a good time when they go out.

Majors: I really enjoy the courses that my major offers because they are interesting and we have access to facilities that allow us to participate in unique labs. While there are many research opportunities available to us, the availability of internship positions are limited.

2 College Sophomore

Majors: I have not had an internship, but I hope to have one sometime in the future. I've heard that, in my specific major, internships are hard to come by and are almost never paid.

4 College Sophomore

Academics: There are a wide variety of course options here and most classes sound interesting and intellectually stimulating. The workload varies a lot from class to class. Many students here are engineering majors and their coursework seems very challenging.

4 College Sophomore

Academics: Many students that are kinesiology majors want to go on to pursue further education in areas such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, physicians assistant and many others. The workload varies from course to course but overall it is manageable if you put in the effort. There are many different research opportunities for kinesiology and the facilities are great. There are limited internship opportunities though.

Diversity: I believe that diversity on this campus is great. We have many international students and many different clubs/groups that educate students on different cultures/races. Many people on campus are very understanding and accepting of people of different backgrounds, races and sexual orientations.

3 College Sophomore

Scholarships: There are not many options for financial aid at this school unless you really search for them.

One might expect some tentative and even negative opinions about any school, but this is truly not the case here at U of I. Students are proud of U of I’s history, proud of is academic accomplishments, proud of the social opportunities it offers, and, most of all, they are proud to be alumni. For so many students to view their choice to come here as an unequivocally good one is a fantastic testament to the University’s strength.

Of course students here have plenty to complain about—the weather, the parking, the Greek social scene, the rural location. But all things considered, the positive points of the U of I experience tipped the scale—the University’s academic excellency, the safety, the social atmosphere, the athletic tradition, the city’s excellent transportation system. Some students admitted that they had a hard time adjusting, that they occasionally wished they had made another decision—but in the end, they were all happy to be here. The most encouraging fact was that so many people mentioned that they were leaving as better people, more knowledgeable, eclectic, and better equipped to navigate through life. University of Illinois students do not just leave with a piece of paper in their hands, they leave with a wealth of experience that is not easily rivaled—and, for in-staters, without enormous debt burdens to face when they graduate.
