4 College Freshman

Local Area: Many theaters and music events. Also a lot of restaurants.

4 College Freshman

Campus Quality: Pretty sociable. There are tons of places to meet with friends as well as to make new ones.

5 College Freshman

Campus Quality: Tons of resources, free access to gyms, and many different opportunities.

3 College Freshman

Campus Housing: I didn't get the housing I requested but I'd say that the campus housing is average. The dorms are okay and it's pretty much what you make of it.

5 College Freshman

Diversity: Tons of different kinds of people. Meeting others with different backgrounds is a neat experience.

5 College Freshman

Overall Experience: My overall experience at U of I in Urbana-Champaign is awesome. Along with great academics, a fun nightlife, and an abundance of resources, the students and staff are friendly. If you are looking for a nice and welcoming college experience, this is the school for you.

4 College Freshman

Transportation: MTD bus service is great although it can drag at times.

4 College Freshman

Academics: U of I's anthropology department is really welcoming. There is a wide variety of interesting classes and the professors know the material very well.

4 College Freshman

Academics: Really good. Great engineering and business program. A lot of work but many resources to help along the way.

4 College Freshman

Technology: There's plenty of computers in each dorm's computer labs and the school's libraries.

2 College Freshman

Parking: I didn't bring my car this school year and I don't really plan to in the future.

4 College Freshman

Party Scene: Good bar and party scene. It's usually rare to be bored on the weekends.

3 College Freshman

Campus Food: It's your average dining hall food. A lot of variety but after a while it all seems to taste the same.

3 College Freshman

Scholarships: I applied and I'm not getting the amount I need.

3 College Freshman

Drug Safety: Alcohol consumption is clearly visible because of huge Greek life. Drug use not so much other than marijuana.

5 College Freshman

Party Scene: If you love to party and care nothing about academics, then this is the place for you. Most of the students are rich and spoiled. Everyone is just here to party on their parents' money. If you are a serious student, I would avoid this scene completely.

Parking: a car isn't really a necessity unless you plan to live off campus

2 College Freshman

Local Area: it's a huge change coming from a large city! at times it gets quite boring being surrounded by corn fields and all.

4 College Freshman

Technology: i didn't have too many problems with the wifi. however, when i did i was always able to find a desktop in the library. there's also a computer lab in every residence hall

Party Scene: there's parties almost every weekend and alcohol is not hard to find, even if you are underage.

One might expect some tentative and even negative opinions about any school, but this is truly not the case here at U of I. Students are proud of U of I’s history, proud of is academic accomplishments, proud of the social opportunities it offers, and, most of all, they are proud to be alumni. For so many students to view their choice to come here as an unequivocally good one is a fantastic testament to the University’s strength.

Of course students here have plenty to complain about—the weather, the parking, the Greek social scene, the rural location. But all things considered, the positive points of the U of I experience tipped the scale—the University’s academic excellency, the safety, the social atmosphere, the athletic tradition, the city’s excellent transportation system. Some students admitted that they had a hard time adjusting, that they occasionally wished they had made another decision—but in the end, they were all happy to be here. The most encouraging fact was that so many people mentioned that they were leaving as better people, more knowledgeable, eclectic, and better equipped to navigate through life. University of Illinois students do not just leave with a piece of paper in their hands, they leave with a wealth of experience that is not easily rivaled—and, for in-staters, without enormous debt burdens to face when they graduate.
