Campus Housing: Choosing the dorm in which you live is something to spend some time thinking about. I chose LAR and am pretty happy with it. We don't have air conditioning, but only the first 3 weeks of the first semester and last couple weeks or so of the second semester are uncomfortable. A fan in your room is a must if you don't have AC. Wifi is completely satisfactory and easy. It's less than a 15 minute walk to the quad, where many freshmen will have their first classes. The floors are co-ed by wing and there were some floor bonding/interaction activities this year, but there were definitely some people on my floor with whom I never spoke or even met.

Off-Campus Dining: There are so many great places to venture to for a meal in both Champaign and Urbana. We are so lucky to have two great cities to be a part of and enjoy their wonderful dining options. Great eateries include Black Dog, Crane Alley, Disthil, Wedge, Radio Maria's, Biaggis, Le Peep...

Party Scene: There is always something going on. You can always find something to go to or to have fun!

Administration: I felt fairly protected by the campus safety, but also felt like I was still at home with my protective parents. The housing was very strict about everything. I felt like they were out to get people in trouble instead of making sure people are safe.

Campus Food: I think campus food is a lot better than I had expected. The Ike had so many great options most of the time. And you for sure can't go wrong with Late Night at PAR!

Campus Housing: Campus Housing has its ups and downs. Some of the dorms are very nice and some are very old. The rooms feel very small unless you decide to have bunk beds with your roommate. If I could re-do my Freshman year, I know I wouldve gone with one of the private certified housing dorms instead of the university housing because of the staff, the size of rooms, and housing policies.

Off-Campus Housing: Have never lived off-campus so Im not sure how it is. But it seems pretty good.

Scholarships: I needed scholarships but I did not get any from the school.

Guys & Girls: Everyone is pretty attractive and smart and loves their school and to have a good time. We go to U of I! Of course we are great!

Campus Housing: Dorm life is okay. It is exactly what you would expect dorm life to be like.

Administration: The dorms and University buildings were the only places that I would consider strict.

Campus Food: The dining halls didn't have food that were desirable. The food was always average and never anything that I craved. I ate it because I needed to to not be hungry.

2 Recent Alumnus

Campus Housing: When I lived in the dorms there were always cockroaches in the restrooms. The dorms were not the best living situation, but I did make many close friends. It was a learning experience for me and I learned how to be an adult.

Greek Life: While there are tons of greek organizations on and off campus, its very easy to steer-clear of the scene altogether. It is not a requirement to join the greek system or a professional fraternity to have a significant social or philanthropic experience. If you're keen to join one only for the parties, then please reconsider your priorities. There is a fair bit of tolerance between greek/non-greek as the campus culture is very symbiotic. As with most things, do your research about the history and reputation with certain organizations. If you're interested in an organization's national level, make sure the local chapter meets those standards.

Overall ExperienceWhat's this?

One might expect some tentative and even negative opinions about any school, but this is truly not the case here at U of I. Students are proud of U of I’s history, proud of is academic accomplishments, proud of the social opportunities it offers, and, most of all, they are proud to be alumni. For so many students to view their choice to come here as an unequivocally good one is a fantastic testament to the University’s strength.

Of course students here have plenty to complain about—the weather, the parking, the Greek social scene, the rural location. But all things considered, the positive points of the U of I experience tipped the scale—the University’s academic excellency, the safety, the social atmosphere, the athletic tradition, the city’s excellent transportation system. Some students admitted that they had a hard time adjusting, that they occasionally wished they had made another decision—but in the end, they were all happy to be here. The most encouraging fact was that so many people mentioned that they were leaving as better people, more knowledgeable, eclectic, and better equipped to navigate through life. University of Illinois students do not just leave with a piece of paper in their hands, they leave with a wealth of experience that is not easily rivaled—and, for in-staters, without enormous debt burdens to face when they graduate.
