Administration: Just like any other school, UIUC tries to manage the underage drinking that goes on.

Diversity: The acceptance of different ethnicities (especially Asian-Americans or international students) is very low. Racism is still an issue here.

Local Area: This area is great for those that prefer a college town over an actual independent city.

Academics: The faculty in the College of ACES are amazing. We are like a very close-knit family.

Technology: There are many computer labs in every living space i've seen, although I am set to live in private certified housing so it may be different for the dorms.

Local Area: The quad is nice, and there are a lot of things to do if you look.

Off-Campus Dining: Not too many options, but there are some.

Drug Safety: People party. Its a big ten.

Off-Campus Housing: I think off campus housing is a cheap and accessible amenity that people should take advantage of once they are upperclassmen.

Party Scene: I don't know that much about night life, but I hear unofficial is great.

Weather: Most of the year consists of a winterish rainy season. However, when summer comes, it's beautiful.

Scholarships: Since it's a state school, there is not much financial aid given out. I think that there needs to be a greater effort in helping people afford to attend. When calling financial aid, they act like they don't have any time for you. You're just one in a crowd. Its just not personal enough.

Drug Safety: The Policy Enforcement is only put into effect when the administration is aware of abinge drinking holiday coming up- like St. Patrick's Day. Otherwise, peer pressure, usage, etc., goes unquestioned.

Academics: We do get to work in a restaurant that is run by students on Fridays which sounds bad, but is fun because of the people.

Weather: The winters are brutal, and living in the great plains doesn't help with the insane wind.

Party Scene: It's good if you go to the right places. A lot of the times the bars will get over packed and the lines are insane. But once you get in it's fun.

3 College Junior

Scholarships: There were a few snags with getting my financial aid, but very little of it had anything to do with the school itself.

3 College Junior

Majors: My major is small, so you're very constrained in what classes you can and can't take at certain times, which screwed me over for graduating on time. Also we take pointless science classes that are extremely difficult.

Overall ExperienceWhat's this?

View student contributors

One might expect some tentative and even negative opinions about any school, but this is truly not the case here at U of I. Students are proud of U of I’s history, proud of is academic accomplishments, proud of the social opportunities it offers, and, most of all, they are proud to be alumni. For so many students to view their choice to come here as an unequivocally good one is a fantastic testament to the University’s strength.

Of course students here have plenty to complain about—the weather, the parking, the Greek social scene, the rural location. But all things considered, the positive points of the U of I experience tipped the scale—the University’s academic excellency, the safety, the social atmosphere, the athletic tradition, the city’s excellent transportation system. Some students admitted that they had a hard time adjusting, that they occasionally wished they had made another decision—but in the end, they were all happy to be here. The most encouraging fact was that so many people mentioned that they were leaving as better people, more knowledgeable, eclectic, and better equipped to navigate through life. University of Illinois students do not just leave with a piece of paper in their hands, they leave with a wealth of experience that is not easily rivaled—and, for in-staters, without enormous debt burdens to face when they graduate.
