Party Scene: People party as much or as little as they want to.

3 College Freshman

Diversity: They try hard to be inclusive even force the freshmen to take a course in diversity but overall student seem to stick with their own type.

4 College Freshman

Academics: The academics are very strong and everyone teaching seems to have a passion for their lecture content.

3 College Freshman

Health & Safety: Immediate campus is pretty safe, especially if you're traveling in a group, but theres reports of people getting randomly attacked

5 College Freshman

Greek Life: Tons of frats and sororities to chose from and they party hard

3 College Freshman

Athletics: Bad teams and not many people show up, but it's fun to watch games

4 College Freshman

Health & Safety: The campus administration makes it clear that sexual assault is a big problem.

3 College Freshman

Overall Experience: I really like this University it's a great place to learn and meet new people.

5 College Freshman

Overall Experience: If you graduate from UIUC you will get a good job.

3 College Freshman

Campus Housing: I am satisfied with my current housing situation at UIUC.

4 College Freshman

Athletics: There are two excellent athletic facilities on campus that are very accessible.

5 College Freshman

Overall Experience: I love this school, everyone here is wonderful and I feel like I made the right decision coming here.

3 College Freshman

Health & Safety: There aren't a lot of cameras on campus in many areas so I see these areas as places where crime can happen and people can get away with it. However, we have great security measures like safe walks and safe rides. Also whenever crimes happens students can get alerts via email on what happened and where.

3 College Freshman

Overall Experience: The professors are really intelligent and are the best in their field. maybe too intelligent so be sure to do the assigned readings before lecture or you won't retain as much from your time there. A lot of the work is optional and then you have the tests. But to do well on the tests, obviously do the assigned readings, homework problems, and review past material because its all about retention. The TAs were always available to answer questions via email which was very helpful late nights.

5 College Freshman

Overall Experience: The school is famous for engineering and computer science. My advisor told me that 70% of students in the aerospace department get internships. Big time employers such as Boeing and google are always at the career fairs that take place here because they know that the students that graduate from this school are worth scouting.

3 College Freshman

Campus Housing: I live pretty far away from my classes. Its about a 30 minutes walk but the bus stop is right outside most campus housing so it overcomes this.

3 College Freshman

Greek Life: Greek life is a big part of campus. There are greek houses everywhere and they are responsible for almost all the parties available on the weekends and Fridays.

4 College Freshman

Athletics: I haven't been to a single athletic event but that is a personal decision. Almost all my friends attend and we are proud of our teams.

5 College Freshman

Overall Experience: There's a lot of school spirit at my school and the college of engineering really prides in being one of the top engineering schools in the country. I'm glad to be a part of all of this. Pluses to this school is the beautiful campus, the two gyms which are convenient, large, and very modern, and also the Illini Union always has something going on on Friday nights. The party culture is there but if you don't participate there are things to do if you have willing friends.

3 College Sophomore

Drug Safety: If you're not a drug user yourself, drugs are hard to see on campus. I've never been peer pressured to do drugs, and while I've been pushed to drink because it's such a large pastime on campus, I've never felt forced to drink; usually it's more of a pressure to go out and "it's okay if you don't even drink." Alcohol is visible everywhere on campus. Getting in trouble for underage drinking happens but is uncommon enough that everyone does it. A pact with the Champaign, Urbana, and campus police allows students to call police for a friend in trouble and the caller (and the friend?) will not get in trouble if they were drinking underage, and I've been at parties where this has actually come in handy - possibly saved lives. People actually use this service and the cops haven't really given students a reason to fear using it; they actively encourage it.

Party Scene: Everyone knows that everyone drinks, regardless of age. You only have to be 19 to get into bars, and once you're in, it's easy to get someone to buy you drinks. CU-MTD (the buses) run until early in the morning; I don't see drinking and driving as an issue on campus. The bars and frats are popping throughout the week, not just on weekends.

4 College Sophomore

Party Scene: Parties occur throughout the week, not just on weekends. I don't find the partying disruptive to campus life; in fact, it's a large part of what campus life consists of. We earned #1 party school of 2015 for a reason.

3 College Sophomore

Diversity: I've never seen someone make a racist remark on the streets, to someone's face, but there's a lot of quieter racism. I'd honestly say most racism is aimed towards Chinese international students. This sometimes bleeds over into Asians in general, but I don't think that's as much of a problem. The black students in my program never face racism from the other students in our program, who are majority white and middle-class. I haven't seen discrimination against Indians. A new mandatory program about diversity is being put in place for freshmen after some Black Lives Matter-style protests this year; mandatory alcohol and sexual assault programs were already in place.

2 College Sophomore

Health & Safety: I'm female and fairly small and I've never been assaulted. Generally, if you know what parts of Champaign to stick to (Urbana is very safe in comparison), you shouldn't get in trouble. However, people have also been attacked just off of Green Street, so there's that. All kinds of people are attacked - male, female, alone, in groups. In the daytime I always feel fine, but one it's dark out, I'd much rather walk in a group, preferably with at least one male.

4 College Sophomore

Overall Experience: In my program, most professors seem to really care about their students as individuals. Many are very strict though. If you're really cut out for my major, the courses are challenging but don't kill you - though sometimes you want to kill professors for stacking projects back-to-back. It seems a fair amount of my classmates are struggling with their coursework but I think this is a problem with the students, not the courses.

One might expect some tentative and even negative opinions about any school, but this is truly not the case here at U of I. Students are proud of U of I’s history, proud of is academic accomplishments, proud of the social opportunities it offers, and, most of all, they are proud to be alumni. For so many students to view their choice to come here as an unequivocally good one is a fantastic testament to the University’s strength.

Of course students here have plenty to complain about—the weather, the parking, the Greek social scene, the rural location. But all things considered, the positive points of the U of I experience tipped the scale—the University’s academic excellency, the safety, the social atmosphere, the athletic tradition, the city’s excellent transportation system. Some students admitted that they had a hard time adjusting, that they occasionally wished they had made another decision—but in the end, they were all happy to be here. The most encouraging fact was that so many people mentioned that they were leaving as better people, more knowledgeable, eclectic, and better equipped to navigate through life. University of Illinois students do not just leave with a piece of paper in their hands, they leave with a wealth of experience that is not easily rivaled—and, for in-staters, without enormous debt burdens to face when they graduate.
