2 College Sophomore

Athletics: We have super bad school spirit

Party Scene: UIUC hands down has the best nightllfe. Every bar is super fun and the party lasts for 6 days a week.

Greek Life: Im a Greek and Greek life runs UIUC. Its huge but there are so many houses that it seems to fit just about everyone.

4 College Sophomore

Health & Safety: The school makes us go to mandatory meetings regarding safety.

5 College Sophomore

Administration: I feel as if they are too carefree with the strictness unless its a extremley serious situation.

1 College Sophomore

Local Area: The local atmosphere is very poor and urban.

5 College Sophomore

Majors: The process of getting into UIUC was a long and hard one. I had a below the average GPA so i worked especially hard on my essays. I would say just try your best.

Majors: The advisors are great. I love it and its all focused towards my love of pscyhology.

2 College Junior

Campus Housing: Some dorms like FAR and PAR are extremely far from campus. It's an additional burden to incoming freshman

1 College Junior

Diversity: There is a lot of racial tension at the school. My guess is that it is due to the high amount of international students at the university, but it affects all races.

Athletics: I was on the varsity team at the University of Illinois. Seemed like students rather party than go to our games.

3 College Junior

Campus Quality: The library is very large, but it isn't the best place to relax and study.

3 College Junior

Majors: It wasn't unique or special. The curriculum was challenging at times but exactly what you would expect from political science courses, a lot of reading

3 College Junior

Party Scene: Most people go to the bars on a nightly basis. There aren't too many house parties.

2 College Junior

Campus Food: Not enough variety. They had a lot of healthy options but few alternatives, not everyone needs to lose weight.

3 College Junior

Health & Safety: I never had a problem with my safety of the safety of others around me, generally a safe campus.

3 College Junior

Guys & Girls: Their is a very large Greek community which leads to in-group vs. out-group conflicts

Off-Campus Housing: Most Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors live off campus. The prices are reasonable and the added freedom is a huge bonus

Campus Food: I only ate in the dining halls for the first semester, as I moved into my sorority house for the second semester. UIUC has loads of dining halls, one that even caters to vegetarians. However, in my experience much of the food was unhealthy and didn't look very appealing. However, there was always a salad bar in each of the dining halls, the options ranging from each dining hall. Meal plans were a bit of a hassle. You could either choose between having too many credits or too few credits. I worked in the dining halls first semester so I got free meals so it wasn't a huge deal for me but my friends often complained about their meal plans.

3 College Sophomore

Scholarships: Because it is a very large school, receiving the financial aid you want can be a hassle so my family does not push on it. We are a middle class family and accept the aid we receive since we know that we probably would not get any additional aid unless my family had special circumstances.

Administration: The attendance policy varies from class to class but most of them have been average for me. Alcohol use in dorms are documented by the RA and a certain number of violations will land you in trouble. Drug use is taken very seriously at UIUC as well as the honor code. I know several students who have gotten into trouble for drug use and cheating. Cops also raid bars on a very frequent basis.

Local Area: The cost of living is somewhat expensive, albeit cheaper than the dorms. The cheapest ones are off-campus and are a 20 minute walk to the quad from what I have been hearing. There is a nearby community college, Parkland, but I have not met anyone from there yet. Transportation is amazing, buses will take you all over campus and there is an app that tells you the arrival times of buses at certain stops.

Athletics: There is a club sport for everyone out there. Many perform well during tournaments and games and many recognize club sports as a great way to stay in shape and meet new people. Unlike other schools, many do not recognize our football team as a huge integral part of the UIUC athletics. Many more people would be seen going to a UIUC basketball game. However, UIUC has much school spirit, students are often wearing uiuc apparel during school days.

Greek Life: UIUC's greek life is one of the biggest in the nation. Greek students are extremely proud of their chapters and you will often see students wearing their letters. Greek life often dominates the social atmosphere of the campus. You will often be asked "Are you in a house?" if you meet someone at a bar. From my personal experience, non-greeks have a stereotype about greek students. Many find that they cannot get into parties and become bored of the bars, especially if they are male.

Health & Safety: UIUC offers services such as SafeWalks and SafeRides, which I have used on numerous occasions and have been thankful for. However, many attempted robbers/robberies and sexual assaults still do occur. It is very frowned upon to walk home at night alone, especially since there are actual high chances of something bad occurring, which speaks volumes to UIUC's safety.

One might expect some tentative and even negative opinions about any school, but this is truly not the case here at U of I. Students are proud of U of I’s history, proud of is academic accomplishments, proud of the social opportunities it offers, and, most of all, they are proud to be alumni. For so many students to view their choice to come here as an unequivocally good one is a fantastic testament to the University’s strength.

Of course students here have plenty to complain about—the weather, the parking, the Greek social scene, the rural location. But all things considered, the positive points of the U of I experience tipped the scale—the University’s academic excellency, the safety, the social atmosphere, the athletic tradition, the city’s excellent transportation system. Some students admitted that they had a hard time adjusting, that they occasionally wished they had made another decision—but in the end, they were all happy to be here. The most encouraging fact was that so many people mentioned that they were leaving as better people, more knowledgeable, eclectic, and better equipped to navigate through life. University of Illinois students do not just leave with a piece of paper in their hands, they leave with a wealth of experience that is not easily rivaled—and, for in-staters, without enormous debt burdens to face when they graduate.
