Local Area: Athens is a mixed bag. The downtown and 5 points area are nice, full of life, and affluent, but the surrounding areas are poor and run down. The gap between the well to do college students and the working citizens of Athens is surprising and sad sometimes.

Health & Safety: I think our administration does a good job of providing services, support, and education about sexual assault and safety. However, with the downtown scene, I believe most students don't worry enough about it or take enough precautions.

We have many organizations to help those downtown, like Designated Dawgs, which take drunk students home for free. We also have many cops downtown, but not a lot on campus.

Off-Campus Dining: There are so many options for off-campus dining. Downtown and 5 points are full of fun and unique restaurants. The fast food chains are farther off campus - you have to drive to most of them, but it is not far (about 5-10 minutes).

Off-Campus Housing: Like any town, the housing varies. Some are very expensive (downtown especially), for not the best quality housing (very loud, always smells like weed, etc).

If you live off campus, it's important to live near a bus line so you can avoid paying for a parking pass. There are many options (1-4 bedroom) for varied costs (usually $350-700 a person).

Athletics: I love attending a school with such exciting athletics. The football games, of course, are a very big deal, but even in the off season, there are many different sporting events to attend: basketball, baseball, equestrian, volleyball, swim team, and my personal favorite, gymnastics!

Our school usually has good fan support and school spirit for most sporting events. With so many students with varied interests, most sporting events are pretty evenly attended.

Greek Life: I am non Greek and to me Greek life is annoying, but not too intrusive to my personal life. I occasionally attend fraternity parties, but I am generally annoyed by the attitudes of most Greek life participants.

I also worked for a caterer and never encountered such unruly and insulting clients. The fraternities were vulgar, made rape jokes, and were generally rude and dismissive.

Scholarships: My school tells me every semester what financial aid they will give me (scholarships and awards) and offer me the ability to take out loans (which i don't do).

Greek Life: They are very helpful with classes. They do a lot of community work, which I love. They are also very friendly

Greek Life: The Greek life of campus is not what is stereotypically portrayed in movies and tv shows. Sororities and fraternities ofter participate in philanthropy events and are members of other clubs across campus.

Off-Campus Housing: I have not yet had to find off campus housing but have received multiple emails and brochures about the various living places around the university. They seem to be close and affordable.

Party Scene: Although parties are not the only way to have "fun" at the university, they are often the most popular. Even if a student does not drink, they are able to enjoy themselves danced and laughing with their friends. Downtown is often very popular on weekends when there aren't parties or after them.

Health & Safety: I have never really felt threatened or scared on campus. Although police are not visible or constantly around, students tend to have a general respect for each other.

One of the most amazing things about students at UGA is that I have never heard one person say they don't like being here. UGA and Athens have so much to offer in so many different categories, that there really is something for everyone. The positive energy of 30,000 people who are happy to be here is captivating, and something you will instantly want to be a part of. It will not take long before you regard Athens as your second home, and after about a week, most students forget how big a school it is.

It's exciting to be in Athens because there is always something going on, whether it is entertainment, a demonstration, job fairs, or just a chance to hang out with people you just met who are now your best friends. Students are encouraged to explore their talents and make the most of their four years here, and most students are able to achieve their ultimate "college experience." Sometimes, it seems like we are all characters in some cheesy teen movie because college life in Athens is so classic, but academically, socially, and personally, this school seems to have changed most of us for the better.
