Off-Campus Dining: Eateries are right across the street from campus. They're super tasty and cheap, and give out discounts (like coupon books worth) every semester.

Transportation: Thanks to mobile apps like TransLoc and Google Maps, getting around UF and Gainesville is not only possible but also stress free. The buses run so often that a lot of my friends live off campus but don't even need cars. The best part? UF's services are all free.

Athletics: We're the Florida Gators. We're home to Heisman winners, NCAA national championships and even olympic athletes. 'Nough said.

Technology: There are multiple computer labs, plenty of free printing and GREAT tech support. Not only does The Hub offer walk-in technology help (laptop, mobile phones, etc.), but most dorms offer tech support as well.

Diversity: I find that not only the administration, but also the students are very accepting of diversity. There are groups for every kind of ethnic heritage, political affiliation, religious background and sexual orientation, and people seem to be open-minded. I consider myself a pretty average student at UF and I have Hindu suitemates and Catholic and Muslim roommates. I work with a gay guy and my friend group is half liberal and half conservative.

Diversity is one of the perks of a state university, and I think it's pretty great.

Health & Safety: Like most top-notch schools, UF has a blue light system, escort service (called SNAP) and their own police office (UFPD). UF also has their own school-run and city-wide bus system. The night bus is called "Later Gator" and offers a safe option for students who need to get around at night.

Additionally, UF's student government is developing a blue light system application that will enable students to alert UFPD with the press of the finger on their mobile phones.

The UFPD also alerts students via text messages when danger is near. The only complaint I have is that UF is an open campus, which means that it's not hard for non-students to just walk on the campus.

Party Scene: I don't party at UF. However, the fact that UF is consistently ranked top ten in biggest party school and Gainesville is a a college town, I imagine it's quite good. Additionally, the sorority girls at UF don't hesitate to post their experiences on weekends and I hear stories about how cheap the drinks are and how crazy the parties are.

College Freshman

Scholarships: I didn't apply for financial aid. I wouldn't need one anyway though, Tuition is about $6K/semester, but most kids get Bright Futures which takes 50% off of that. Thus, my tuition is only $3K/semester.

Weather: It's swamp weather, but go gators

Administration: It really depends on what you're doing as to strictness.

Weather: Coming from Virginia, the weather in Gainesville is beautiful. Yes, it rains randomly, but carry an umbrella in your bookbag and that solves it all. In the "winter" months, it might be cold in the morning, but it warms up by 2 or 3 PM. I love it.

Overall Experience: I love UF so much. Everything is amazing. The town is great, the people are great, the food is great, the options are plenty, and the diversity, something very important to me, is beautiful.

Parking: I haven't really found the need for a car mainly because a lot of my friends have cars so I just catch rides from them and tip them a little gas money.

4 College Junior

Overall Experience: The opportunities that are available and the different things I have been able to be a part of are what have made my college experience.

3 College Junior

Weather: The weather in Florida can be a little unpredictable at times, but on the whole it is pretty solid.

4 College Senior

Campus Housing: It's a lot of fun living on campus. Being in such close proximity to others brings out a great social scene.

Majors: I really enjoy being a mechanical engineer. I have an interest in the subject area, and the courses I have taken have helped further my interest in the subjects. The curriculum and workload can be heavy but it is doable and can be intuitive at times.

5 College Senior

Majors: The internships I have had have been really great. It simulated full time experiences and paid $12-15 an hour. The duties were similar to what would be done in the work environment and were very good.

5 College Senior

Health & Safety: There are crimes that happen on and around campus, but the police are very responsive, and there is a campus text that is sent out by the police department for information in almost real time.

5 College Senior

Weather: The weather is great, being in Florida. The only thing that is bad is when it rains or when the weather is too hot and humid.

2 College Senior

Parking: Permits cost anywhere from $50-100 but even with one you are not guaranteed a spot where you need to be. The ticket fines are a reasonable $15-45 and are handed out very fast. There is not a need necessarily for cars on campus but it does help at times.

4 College Senior

Administration: The campus is strict where it needs to be, and enforces the rules correctly and within their rights without being overbearing. They are in general very strict about parking, but as long as the rules are followed there should be no issues.

4 College Senior

Academics: Being a mechanical engineer is great, the course load can be difficult but there are many opportunities for employment and internships. There are also many facilities readily available to the students such as 3-D printers and other lab environments.

4 College Senior

Academics: There are some great professors and there are some bad professors, but overall the ability to learn from the professors is not easy but not difficult at the same time.

5 College Senior

Diversity: There is a lot of diversity on campus and everybody is widely accepted.

Some schools have certain advantages over others. Small schools give a feeling of community; large schools have lots of resources; private schools are ripe for close academic relationships with faculty; and state schools offer a good value. Well, UF is not your typical state school, and Gainesville is certainly not your stereotypical small town. Because this place is so big, it has all of the libraries, dorms, athletics, courses, clubs, and services you could want at a good price. But if you put forth just a little effort, you’ll find that the University also has more compassionate, down-to-earth professors, locals, and students that any small, private school could ever dream of having.

The best thing about going to a school like UF is that whatever you want to accomplish in life, it is probably obtainable through going to this school. You will never have to worry about not fitting in with anyone because the campus is a huge melting pot. Students are never bored on campus because there is literally always something to do with friends both on or off campus. And who wouldn't want to go to a school where the immense amount of school pride is literally unexplainable? It sure is great to be a Florida Gator.
