3 College Freshman

Greek Life: Some are viewed as worse than others because of reputations and actions that individuals do. Some also are very stereotypical and not what you imagined. I a m a legacy for a sorority and when my aunt described her experience I thought it sounded fantastic but when I did research on the chapter here I was disappointed. Some people take it too far as if their life depends on it but others are 'acceptable'.

Athletics: It is the only thing people seem to bond over; people do not really try to connect unless they need something for you or like sports.

Overall Experience: People are not welcoming and the teachers seem to give up faster than the students.

Campus Housing: Most residential buildings around campus will be near classes that students must take, but some end up being on the other side of the campus. Students have to plan classes around their residence locations at times.

Greek Life: Greek life is very prominent here at UF, but it is not reveered by a majority of the student body. It is seen very much as an extension of high school where students are segregated in cliques.

Athletics: The Gators did pretty well this football season, but we have amazing sports teams such as our swim team, soccer team, gymnastics team, etc.

Overall Experience: UF offers amazing opportunities and has a very passionate and involved faculty. Every semester I have had here has been memorable and made easier because of the people around the campus.

Party Scene: A lot of people party - almost every day of the week there's going to be people at the club.

Party Scene: There's a lot to choose from. You can really go to any place you want based on what you like.

Academics: There's a reason why UF is the top ranked school in FL! Most professors care about the students and want to make sure we succeed. Registration process is super easy - just learn how to read your Degree Audit and get the Holds off early. Workload is the same of any other school like UF - there's a lot. However, there's off campus resources to help study. Usually students pair up with studying at Library West or Marston.

Diversity: With the international program, there are a lot of diverse students on campus.

Drug Safety: I really don't see much abuse in terms of drugs on campus.

Overall Experience: Most of the teachers on campus really care about your education. If you make sure you go to the office hours and really talk to them, they can really help you out if you're having trouble in your class. Gen-Ed courses are also great at UF. They're usually boring, but the teachers they have here really make it exciting and not a pain to study for.

Overall Experience: There's so many opportunities to get a job or an internship as an UF student. The biggest event on campus, Career Showcase, puts all of these employers in one place so UF students can get out there and score that dream job or internship. It's great!

Health & Safety: With some of the problems on campus a few semesters ago, the UFPD really stepped up and made sure we felt safe. There are a lot of different things to use to stay safe on campus - the best is SNAP. They come pick you up and take you home if you live on campus. Most parking lots are well lit so I don't feel so bad if I need to walk from Library West to a parking lot down the street.

Campus Housing: I lived in Beaty as a freshman and it really wasn't bad. The location was pretty centralized, but I didn't like having 3 roommates and the room was SUPER SMALL. My little sister lived in Lakeside when she went to UF, and it had an attached bathroom which was nice, but it was SUPER FAR AWAY from where the classes were. I didn't even know that area of town was considered part of UF campus. It's crazy. I would definitely recommend students get a dorm close to classes, like Broward or Beaty or Windsor Hall.

Greek Life: As a Greek student, I'm obviously going to have some biases. Greek students are extremely involved and campus and are usually not received well by non-Greek students. Greek housing is mainly located in two places, fraternity and sorority row, with a few stragglers scattered around campus. It's super cheap compared to off-campus and dorm living. I'm extremely glad I joined a sorority because it opened up so many personal and professional doors for me. The amount of people you meet and get to know in Greek life is an opportunity you would never be afforded otherwise.

Overall Experience: If I had to do it all over again, I would choose UF. This school has given me so many opportunities to grow personally and professionally and I've made my best friends along the way. I wouldn't change a thing.

Some schools have certain advantages over others. Small schools give a feeling of community; large schools have lots of resources; private schools are ripe for close academic relationships with faculty; and state schools offer a good value. Well, UF is not your typical state school, and Gainesville is certainly not your stereotypical small town. Because this place is so big, it has all of the libraries, dorms, athletics, courses, clubs, and services you could want at a good price. But if you put forth just a little effort, you’ll find that the University also has more compassionate, down-to-earth professors, locals, and students that any small, private school could ever dream of having.

The best thing about going to a school like UF is that whatever you want to accomplish in life, it is probably obtainable through going to this school. You will never have to worry about not fitting in with anyone because the campus is a huge melting pot. Students are never bored on campus because there is literally always something to do with friends both on or off campus. And who wouldn't want to go to a school where the immense amount of school pride is literally unexplainable? It sure is great to be a Florida Gator.
