Diversity: This year at the University of Florida, there has been a major acceptance of diversity, especially for the LGBTQ community. Even talking to students about diversity, the attitude has a very liberal approach and students are extremely accepting of people who have different backgrounds, political views, and ethnicities.

Drug Safety: Drinking Is Popular – Access to alcohol is prevalent at UF. However, UF campus police are usually around everywhere so you have to be careful drinking on campus.

Majors: Farily Easy – Getting into the Accounting School was fairly easy and usually is the case for students with less than 60 credits (so freshman and sophomore). I had to schedule an appointment with an advisor and then I was given approval to change my major from Finance to Accounting. As long as your GPA isn't terrible you should get into the program.

Parking: parking zones are organized by amount of credits so underclassmen dont have many places they can park in but thankfully the bus system on campus is so awesome

3 College Freshman

Weather: So Fickle – for some reason, gainesville likes to change weather extremes from really hot days to really cold mornings. or when it turns into to most dreary and wet rainy, cold day

3 College Freshman

Campus Quality: Job Fair – The career resourvce program at UF is amazing. Every year they host a job fair for all students and actual employers come where you can hand out your resume and make connections.

Administration: The strictness at UF to me is more average then strict or not strict. They punish when they feel like someone is deserving of punishment. The only strict part is parking which is just hell to go through. They will ticket for ANYTHING.

Technology: the computers on campus are great. The only problem is that there are way to many students for the amount of computers and tables available.

Weather: Rain, Burning Hot Sun, and Freezing Temperatures – I think the weather in Gainesville changes really quickly. Most of the time it will be really hot and humid, but it gets really cold in December to February. It will remain cold until mid-April and come with lots of rain. There will be hot days in the spring and suddenly relapse into really cool weather. Both for the most part, expect rain and lots of it.

Off-Campus Dining: The Usual Chain Restaurants – There are plenty of restaurants off-campus, but the variety of different types of food is a little disappointing. There are yogurt places, Americanized Chinese and Japanese restaurants, Vegan restaurants, and the usual Olive Garden, Bonefish Grill, Red Lobster, etc. There's still a good selection, but in comparison to Orlando, Gainesville still cannot compare.

Transportation: Everything in Walking Distance but There Are Plenty of Buses – Really, everything you need is in walking distance. Buses are really helpful when you want to go grocery shopping and stuff like that and the routes go straight to important plazas. Buses and our nighttime patrol SNAP is free with a student ID, the only problem is sometimes when all the buses are off on their routes away from campus there is some waiting time.

Off-Campus Housing: Reasonable Priced Apartments – There are reasonably priced apartments that are rather nearby campus, however not walking distance. There is a good transportation system though, with many bus routes. Most people who live off campus use the bus system. Apartments walking distance from campus, however, are more expensive and out of most people's price range.

Parking: There is never a spot, and when there is it is really far away. Not worth paying for a decal.

2 College Junior

Campus Housing: Upperclassman Dorms Are the Best – The freshman dorms at the University of Florida are not quite worth the money. The only perk is the proximity to classes. However, the renovated older dorms, such as Murphrey Hall, are nice and worth staying in.

3 College Freshman

Campus Food: Not Enough Options Throughout the Week – Often the meals are repeated too close together so there are few options

3 College Freshman

Party Scene: Plenty of Options – There are several clubs which are pretty much packed with students downtown. The school is also right across the street from midtown which is just a street full of bars. So there is plenty to do. There are also plenty of bus services to accommodate students and encourage them to not drive.

4 College Freshman

Overall Experience: Great Environment – I love the University of Florida, not only do you get the top education here but Gainesville is also a fun place to live in. There is plenty to do here, so much that many consider living there after graduation.

3 College Sophomore

Overall Experience: Not Too Shabby – It is a nice area to live in and you can meet some really cool people. The nightlife isn't as great as places like Orlando or Tampa, but it is all what you make of it. However, the advisors do not want to help you whatsoever. They are there to get paid and it shows.

Greek Life: All Over the Place – Everywhere you go you cannot escape the constant reminder that greek life exists on campus. They try and dominate the student government. They are also very cliquey. It's like high school drama all over again.

Parking: Finding parking at UF is difficult. If you buy a parking pass it gets easier but you will only be able to park in the lots marked the same color as your pass. This isn't always convenient because the color lot you buy a pass for isn't always near your classes. While there is meter parking around campus it is next to impossible get during peak hours. Parking tickets are given out like candy, there seems to be no end to the police officers that give tickets. If you get too many tickets in a term you can loose your permit as well.

Greek Life: Very Popular – I wasn't a member of a Panhellenic sorority but I was in an executive position in Student Government so I had frequent dealings with them. I found most of the fraternities and sororities at UF to be quite friendly and welcoming. People not involved in Greek life tended to have a negative view of it and while there were of course bad eggs, I would say on the whole, they had a positive impact on the campus. Greek life dominated the social scene as well as Student Government.

Drug Safety: Drinking Beats Out Drugs – The main drug throughout Gainesville tends to be pot. While harder drugs ca be found most people seem to frown on the use of them. Pot is very normal and most people aren't concerned if they go somewhere and find someone smoking. Drinking is much more popular and enjoyed.

Campus Quality: Almost Perfect – The upkeep and maintance of the facilities is surprisingly good at UF, despite the age of the school. There are always prompt and periodic repairs or renovations going on, and the maintance team is very active and can even be called in my students, in terms of campus housing. For the most part, the buildings have very good layout, are always clean, and functional according to the purpose they serve. High tech, up to date, and visually pleasing!

Guys & Girls: Students Are Varied – At UF, you'll find a pretty broad rang of kids, from extremely smart to "how-am-I-going-to-the-same-school-as-this-person?" status. Same goes for looks, although I would say that the boys and girls generally look pretty good. In terms of interests, though, there isn't all that much diversity: I would say about 70% or more are members of fraternities/sororities, and heavily party. On top of that, relationships are not as common as hook-ups, and study habits are rather last-minute tutoring service oriented. A lot of school spirit, though, from those always in the library to the ones in the football stadiums.

Parking: Parking is really difficult for students living on-campus. Even off-campus students are troubled by the decal rules, times and signs. You need to be careful if you bring a car and be wary of where you park. Tow trucks are a Gators worst enemy.

Some schools have certain advantages over others. Small schools give a feeling of community; large schools have lots of resources; private schools are ripe for close academic relationships with faculty; and state schools offer a good value. Well, UF is not your typical state school, and Gainesville is certainly not your stereotypical small town. Because this place is so big, it has all of the libraries, dorms, athletics, courses, clubs, and services you could want at a good price. But if you put forth just a little effort, you’ll find that the University also has more compassionate, down-to-earth professors, locals, and students that any small, private school could ever dream of having.

The best thing about going to a school like UF is that whatever you want to accomplish in life, it is probably obtainable through going to this school. You will never have to worry about not fitting in with anyone because the campus is a huge melting pot. Students are never bored on campus because there is literally always something to do with friends both on or off campus. And who wouldn't want to go to a school where the immense amount of school pride is literally unexplainable? It sure is great to be a Florida Gator.
